UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. WRIGHT, OF OENTRETON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ISAAC R. KULP, OF HATFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAY-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,503, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed April 27, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. WRIGHT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at (Jentreton, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Hay-Presses, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the press embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation at a right angle to that of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of means for conveniently stamping hay or other material prior to pressing.
It also consists of mechanism for operating the stamping-head and pressing-follower.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame of the press, and B the pressin g box or chamber.
0 D represent two parallel shafts, which are mounted horizontally in suitable bearings 2 5 on the outside of the frame A, near the bottom thereof, the shaft 0 having fitted to it the free power-wheel E, a gear-wheel, F, fixed to said wheel E, a sliding clutch, G, and a fixed winding-drum, H.
The shaft D has connected to it a fixed gear-wheel, J, which meshes with the wheel F, a sliding clutch, K, and a loose pinion, L, which engages with the rack M, to one end of which are connected the levers N of the fol- 5 lower of the press.
The clutch G is operated by a lever, G, and the clutch K by a lever, K, both suitably supported on the frame A.
A represents a frame, which is sustained on the press above the box B, and supports rollers or bearings a I) o d,- and P represents a beam carrying at bottom a stamping-head, P, and at top a roller or bearing, 0, said beam occupying a position at or near the middle of 5 the frame A, and adapted to enter the box B, the top whereof is adapted to be opened.
A rope or chain, Q, is connected at its upper end to the frame A, then passes over the roller 0, under the roller b, and over the roller a, and extends to the drum H, on which it may be wound.
(No modeL) A rope or chain, It, is connected to the head P or beam 1?, passed over the rollers c d, and extends down aside of the frame A, and carries at its end a weight, S.
The operation is as follows: The clutch Gr is disengaged from the clutch-box F of the gear-wheel F and the clutch K from the clutch-box K of the pinion L. The drum H, being free to revolve, permits the rope or chain Q to unwind, and the weight S then exerts its power to raise the head P. The hay or other material is now placed in sufficient quantities in the box or chamber B, and the clutch G then moved to engage with the box F. As the shaft 0 is rotated by power of the wheel E the drum H is also rotated and the rope or chain Q, wound thereon. This forces down the beam P and presses the head against the material and forcibly stamps it. The clutch Gris again thrown out, and the depressed beam and head are immediately elevated by the weight S, after which more material is thrown into the box or chamber B, and the other operations are repeated. When the 7 5 stamping is finished the top of the box B is closed, the clutch K is engaged with the box K of the pinion L, and the rack M is drawn forward, thus operating the levers N and forcing the follower against the material in the box and pressing it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as .new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The stamping-head P and beam P, in combination with the rope or chain Q, bearings a b 0, frame A, and winding-drum H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The stamping-head P and depressing rope or chain Q, in combination with the eleo vatin g rope or chain, with weight S, substantially was and for the purpose set forth.
3. The shafts O D, clutches G F K K, wheels F J, drum H, and pinion L, in combination with the rope or chain Q, of the stamp- 5 ing-head P and levers N of the follower, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
A. WRIGHT.
