UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GIDEON SEARL, OF FRANKLINYILLE, NEW YORK.
CAR-COUPLING TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,400, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed April 23, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown thatI, GIDEON SEARL, of Franklinville,in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Coupling and Uncoupling Instruments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thein vention, which will enable others skilled in theart to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a top view of the instrument; Fig. 2, a side View of the same.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in both figures.
lhis invention is an improvement upon the car coupling and uncoupling instrument for which Letters Patent No. 226,250 were issued to me, hearing date April 6, 1880. The instrument described therein has a pair of spring plates or jaws at one end for holding a coupling-pin ready for insertion in the draw-head of a car, and a pairof spring plates orjaws at the other end for handling the conpling-link, one set of jaws being arranged at right angles to the other, so that both may perform their functions at the same time; but in using the said instrument the ends have to be reversed in position after adjusting a coupling-link before the coupling-pin can be inserted.
By. my present improvement the jaws or spring-plates, both for handling the couplinglink and for holding the coupling-pin, are at;- tached or applied to the same end of the handle or bar of the instrument, and they are so arranged that they do not interfere with each other.
In the drawings, A represents the handle or bar of the instrument, of any suitable construction, as shown, or otherwise.
At the forward end of the handle the plates or jaws B B are attached or arranged for handling the coupling-link preferably, but not nec- (No model.)
lessarily, elastic or yielding. They may be rounded at the ends, as shown, or of other desired form, for this purpose alone, or they may be pointed or wedge-shaped for additional use in uncoupling ears, as set forth in my aforesaid Letters Patent, or one jaw or plate may be rigid and the other elastic or yielding. v
A little back of the jaws B B, for handling the coupling-link, and 011 a side of the handle A, intermediate between them, so as to be at right angles, or thereabout, thereto, I attach ing a coupling-pin ready for insertion in place while handling the coupling-link. Two plates orjaws might be used for the purpose, but a single spring-plate, acting in connection with the handle A, suffices for the purpose; and another coupling-pin holder may be attached to the opposite side of the handle, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. It is arranged as shown, or otherwise, so as to effect the purpose set forth.
It will be seen that this combination and arrangement of the plates or jaws B B and O render it unnecessary to shift ends of the instrument in coupling cars, and that the instrument is very convenient.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An instrument for coupling cars composed ofa handle, A, a pair of plates or jaws,B B, at one end of the handle, and one or more plates or jaws, O, at the same end of the handle, situated back of said end plates or jaws, and on the intermediate side or sides of the handle, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as two witnesses.
