CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming partl of Letters Patent No. 228,212, dated June 1, 1880.
Application led September 24, 1879.
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that we, FRANKLIN ALEXAN- DER MORAND, of Cheyenne, in the county of Osborne and State of Kansas, and JOSEPH ED- 5 WARDS, of Hays City, in the county of Ellis and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Gar-Coupling, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to furnish a car-coupling so constructed as to couple the 2o cars automatically as they are run together, couple cars of different heights, and connect the cars securely, while giving them the necessary play for passing around curves.
The invention consists, essentially, in a z 5 coupling-bar made in two parts and provided with a ball-and-socket joint at its rear end for giving it a free vertical and lateral movement, as hereinafter fully described.
A are the draw-bars, which are designed to 3o be secured to the frame of the car. rllhe bar B of the coupling is made in two parts or halves, placed the one upon the other. rlfhe inner ends of the parts of the coupling-bar B are placed between the ends of a U-shaped 3 5 bar, C. The bar C is made wider than the end of the coupling-bar B, and its ends are connected together by two pins or bolts, c', passed through their corners at the opposite sides of the said bar B.
In the inner surfaces ofthe parts of the bar B are formed semicircular recesses b', to receive a ball, d', formed upon the forward end of a rod, D, which passes through the bend of the U-bar C, and has a pin or other fastening 4 5 attached to it to prevent it from being drawn out. The draw-rod D also passes through holes in the center of two cross-bars, E, placed between the arms of the U-bar C, and the ends of which enter the slots of two metal plates, 5o F, attached to the draw-bars A.
Upon the draw-rod D, between the crossbars E, is placed a spiral spring, G. The ends of the spring G rest against the cross-bars E, so that it may prevent a too heavy jar when the cars are started and when they are run to- 55 gether.
The inner edges of the rear ends of the parts of the coupling-bar B are beveled, so that their forward ends may be separated without releasing the ball d of the draw-rod D, and with- 6o out spreading the ends of the U-bar C. In the forward end ofthe coupling-bar B is formed a semicircular or cup-shaped cavity or mouth, b2, to guide the end of the coupling-rod H into place from whatever direction it may come. 6 5
The coupling-rod H has a ball, h', formed upon each end, which balls h are tapered or made conical, so that they may readily enter the mouth of the coupling-bar B, spread the forward ends of its parts, and enter the cavi- 7o ties b3, formed in the adjacent sides of the said parts at a little distance from their forward ends, as shown in Fig. 2.
rlhe coupling-rods H may be made with a ball, h', at one end, and an eye, h2, at the other 75 end, as shown in Fig. 5, to adapt them for use for coupling a car provided with our improved coupling to one provided with the ordinary link-and-pin coupling.

The arms of the bar I project above the coupling-bar B, and to their ends are pivoted the Lipper corners of the locking-block J, the lower edge of which rests upon the' upper side of the 8 5 upper part of the coupling-bar B, to prevent the said part from rising and releasing the coupling-rod H. l
The cars are uncoupled by swinging the locking-block J up out of contact with the 9o coupling-bar B.
To the lower corners of the locking-block J are attached arms K, for convenience in operating it. The locking-block J, when turned up, rests against the draw-bar A in such a po- 95 sition as to be thrown down by the jar when the cars run together, so as to lck the coupling-rod in place automatically.
