Description
April21, 1942.- D. A. BRENNAN FASTENER Filed June 21, 1939 XEL'ZZTZZH NN N m A m J Patented Apr. 21,- 1942 FASTEI QER Daniel A. Brennan, Chicago, 111.; Elmer L. zwickel, executor of said Daniel A. Brennan, deceased, assignor to Acco Products, Inc., Long Island City, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application June 21, 1939, Serial No. 280,267
i 1 to 4, inclusive, the base member 4 includes an -4 Claims.
The invention relates to improvements in fastening devices and more particularly to bendable 'prong paper fasteners and means to detachably secure the base member thereof to a file folder or similar backing sheet.
An object of the invention is to provide a paper fastener base, of a type having bendable sheet receiving prongs, with novelly formed means to ing means which are inexpensive to construct,
simple to operate, and highly efiicient in use.
The foregoing and such other objects of the invention as will more fully appear hereinafter as the description proceeds will be more readily understood from a perusal of the following specification, in which reference is had to the accom-.
panying drawing, wherein: V
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a fastener assembly, showing its base member. attached to a file folder or backing sheet. v
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the base member and mounting, detached, taken on a .vertlcal plane extending longitudinally of the fastening device.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a fragment of the structure shown in Fig. 2, showing the parts assembled.
Fig. 4 is a view, in perspective, of the bottom of a fragment of the base shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of a base element and mounting, showing a modified strucplan view of the base pressor after said prongs have been passed through registering holes in a stack of papers (not shown) and apertures 5 in thecompressor. In each of the embodiments illustrated, the bases 4 are formed to co-operate with a mounting member 8 to facilitate ready attachment to a file folder or backing sheet A.
In the specific embodiment shown in Figs.
intermediate body portion having downwardly struck longitudinal ribs 1 adjacent each edge providing a longitudinal channel on the under face of said intermediate body portion. A portion of the intermediate body portion is struck downwardly adjacent each end, each to define a depressed strap 8 which bridges the channel portion and preferably lies substantially flush with the bottom plane of the, longitudinal ribs 1.
The mounting member 6 is provided with longitudinally spaced upwardly struck fingers 9, each of which isadapted to resiliently engage over one of the depressed strap portions 8 when the base member 4 is mounted in place. trated in Fig. 2 and 3, the base member is' first positioned against the top face of the mounting member andthen moved longitudinally to engage the resilient fingers 9 over the straps. A detent projection ll may beprovided on the free end of each finger to frictionally engage over an edge of the associated strap, thus preventing inadvertent disengagement of the parts. Additional means in the form of at least one detent projection I! may be provided on one or both of the ribs 1 for engaging in a detent or recess 13 in the mounting member to further retard inadvertent disengagement of the assembled parts.
The structure illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 is substantially like that previously described except that in this instance, downwardly struck sockets H are provided in the intermediate portion of the base member 4 and each is provided with a bayonet slot [5 for cooperative engagement with headed rivets l6 carried on the mounting member 6a. The rivets may serve also.
to secure the mounting member to the backing sheet A. To assemble this type of device, the fastener base is placed over the mounting member with the headed rivets extending into the .disarranging the sheets and the sheets may be aseasily replaced in the file by properly locating the interlocking formations on the mounting As best illusmember t and base 4 and then sliding one member relative to the other.
l'ilthough exemplary forms and adaptations of an improved device have been illustrated in the accompanying drawing and described in detail in the foregoing specification, it is to be understood; that, said illustrations and description are illustrative rather than-restrictive; and that, each device may vary in structural details without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A filing device, comprising a fastener for detachably binding a plurality of sheets havin a pronged base portion, a plurality of straps spaced below the bottom face of said base portion, a mounting member, a plurality of co-operating members on said mounting member for resilient- 1y engaging over said straps when said fastener is seated on one face of said mounting member and detachably connecting and retaining said fastener in superposed relation on said mounting member, and means on one of said cooperating members to frictio'nally engage over an edge of the engaged strap to prevent inadvertent disengagement.
2. A filing device, comprising a fastener for detachably binding a plurality of sheets having a base portion formed with beads along opposite edge portions, bridge portions connecting the beads one adjacent each end of said base portion, and a mounting member having portions forming co-operating members for resiliently engaging over the bridge portions when the fastener is seated on one face of said mounting member and detachably connecting and retaining said fastener in superposed relation on said mounting member.
3. In a filing device, a base having spaced apart prongs to receive a plurality of sheets of paper threaded thereon and a, longitudinal channel in its bottom face between said prongs, straps bridging the channel one at each end, a mounting member; and means on said mounting member for resiliently engaging over said straps when thebase is seated on said mounting member and.
detachably connecting and retaining said base in superposed relation on said mounting member.
4. In a filing device, a base having spaced apart prongs to receive a plurality of sheets of paper threaded thereon and a longitudinal channel in its bottom face between said prongs, a struck out portion of said base at each end extending into said channel, a mounting member, and onset projections on said mounting member for engaging said struck out portions when the base is seated on said mounting member and detachably connecting and retaining said base in superposed relation on said mounting member.
DANIEL A. BRENNAN.
