Description
Patented Apr. 21, 1942 2 8 MANUFACTURE or name oms Remmet, Prlester, Deventer, Netherlands, as-
slgnor to Naamlooze Vennootschap' Industrleele Maatschappij Voorheen Noury & Van Der Lande, Deventer, Netherlands, a company of the Netherlands No Drawing. Application June 13, 1939, Serial ,978 -I n Great Britain June, 20. 1938 1'5 Claims. (01. 106-311) The invention relates to the manufacture of improved drying oils suitable as media adapted for the production of paints and of impregnating agents. Irr particular, improved drying oils are obtained by incorporating 'Isano-oil in drying or semi-drying vegetable or fish oils or products derived from these oils.
Isano-oil, also referred to in 'the literature under the name .0ngueka-oil, is the oilfwhich,
occurs in the kernels of the nuts of Ongokea Klaineane," a tree which belongs to the family of the OIeaceae, which is very frequently found wild in tropical Africa. Other names for this tree are Ongokea Gore, Ongueko des Mpongues, "Isano Loango, and Gore Pahouin.
.The raw Isano-oil as such has not the slightest drying properties; these properties only develop after heating. 1
However, it has now been found that by mixing untreated I'sano-oil at room temperature with drying or semi-drying vegetable or fish oils or products derived from these oils, an improved oil may be obtained with quick drying properties and a very good water-resistance. In what direction the improvement is obtained depends on the ratio of the ingredients in the mixture. A
- rapidly drying oil may be obtained, for example,
by mixing linseed oil with Isano-oil in a ratio of 4:1; such a mixture dries in about 48' hours while pure linseed-oil requires, for drying, at least 72 hours.
By increasing the ratio of Isano-oil to linseed oil to about 45 parts of Isano-oil to 55 parts of linseed oil, the drying time is the same as that of pure linseed oil. Such a mixture, however, shows valuable improvements as regards waterproofness and elasticity of the film, which are even better than in the mixture of 1 part of Isano-oil to 4 parts of linseed oil. It seems that with mixtures of Isano-oil and linseed oil a maximum in the speed of drying is obtained by a ratio of 1:4;
while a maximum'in regard to waterproofness and elasticity is obtained with a ratio of 1:1.
That the acceleration of the speed of drying of linseed oil is indeed due to a particular action of Isano-oil appears clearly from the so-called Weger curves. In these curves the increase of weight of the film of the drying oil is plotted against the time during the drying process.
Whereas the weight of. linseed oil itself increases about 13% during drying, and still increases after the film is dry to about 16-18%, a mixture of Isano-oil and linseed oil (1:4) shows an increase of weight of 9% only. A further particularity is that the dry film of the mixture does not increase in weight but shows a constant weight for 5 a long time, whereas the linseed oil film loses much of its weight in course of time.
, A further feature of the cold mixture of a drying oil and'Isano-oil in a ratio of 4:1 is the fact that such a mixturehas improved wetting properties in respect of pigments; also pigments may be more easily ground with the oil, the paint obtained has a better flow and a high gloss. An ordinary linseed-oil acquires by mixing with Isano-oil the properties of an enamel vehicle.
Also after addition of driers similar results are observed. T
Example 1 To a varnish linseed oil, driers are added in a normal quantity such as 0.25% lead, 0.015% cobalt and 0.015% manganese, for instance inthe form of naphthenates. Four parts of this oil are mixed with 1 part of Isano-oil and thereafter the drying time of pure linseed oil and the mixture are determined. Whereas the linseed oil is.
dry after 6 hours, the mixture dries (under identical conditions) in 4 hours. The film of the mixture shows a much better waterproofnes than that of linseed oil.
Example 2 The same experiment as described in Example 1 was carried out with rawlinseed oil, sojabean oil and sardine oil in the mixture. Similar results were obtained as with the experiment in Example 1.
