3 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in grinding machines and relates more specifically to a fulcrum for the rest plate on which the work is supported, such as referred to in my prior Patent No. 1,477,151, and the object of the present invention is to provide a fulcrum for the work press bar whereby to secure one end of the bar against movement while the other end of the bar is being manipulated by the hand of the workman for forcing the work into engagement with the grinding wheel.
A further object is to provide a fulcrum of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eliicient in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view,
Figure 2 is a front elevational view, and
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the fulcrum.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral I designates the rotary tool such as a grinding, buffing or polishing wheel. A platform 2 is provided for supporting the work 3 in a position for engagement by the tool, the plate having a plurality of openings 4 therein adapted to receive the legs 5 projecting from the lower edge of the fulcrum plate 6.
The fulcrum plate 6 is thus supported on its lower edge in an upright position adjacent one end of the plate 2 and the fulcrum may be secured against removal by means of locking pins (not shown) adapted for insertion in the openings 1 formed in the legs 5 which are positioned beneath the plate 2.
The upper surface of the plate 2 may also be formed with a channel 8 within which the lower edge of the fulcrum plate is adapted to seat.
The fulcrum plate 6 is formed with a pair of vertically spaced horizontal slots 9 having communication with each other through a passage Ill. The lower edge of each of the slot 9 are formed with notches II, the notches preferably having one wall inclined as shown at I 2 and having an overhanging lip !3 at the upper edge of the notch at the opposite wall thereof. The base of the notches thus form pockets or recesses l4 adapted to receive one end of the bar l5 which is utilized to engage the work 3 in a manner for forcing the same into engagement with the grind ing tool I. The end of the bar I5 is also provided with a head Hi to prevent withdrawing of the bar from the pocket, and the overhanging lip l3 also forms a restricted opening for the pocket [4 to prevent removal of the bar l5 from the pocket by a direct upward movement of the bar.
One edge of the passage "I may also be formed with a recess or pocket I! likewise having an upstanding lip [8 to form a restricted opening for the pocket.
The plurality of pockets or recesses l4 formed in the upper and lower slots 9 of the fulcrum plate thus provide numerous adjustments for the bar I5 to accommodate work of various sizes and shapes when positioned on the supporting plate 2 so that the proper force may be exerted by the bar [5 for urging the work against the grinding tool.
It is believed the details of construction, operation and advantages of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A fulcrum for the press bar of a grinding machine, said fulcrum comprising a plate supported in an upright position and having a pair of horizontal, vertically spaced slots therein, said slots having a connecting passage and adapted to receive one end of the press bar, and notches formed in an edge of each slot and into which the bar is movable, said notches having restricted entrances to obstruct removal of the press bar therefrom.
2. A fulcrum for the press bar of a grinding machine, said fulcrum comprising a plate supported in an upright position and having a pair of horizontal, vertically spaced slots therein, said slots having a connecting passage and adapted to receive one end of the press bar, notches in the lower edges of said slots into which the bar is movable, said notches having an inclined wall and an overhanging lip on its other wall forming a restricted entrance to the notch for obstructing removal of the press bar therefrom.
3. A fulcrum for the press bar of a grinding machine, said fulcrum comprising a plate supported in an upright position and having a pair of horizontal, vertically spaced slots therein, said slots having a connecting passage and adapted to receive one end of the press bar, notches in the lower edges of said slots into which the bar is movable, said notches having an inclined wall and an overhanging lip on its other wall forming a restricted entrance to the notch for obstructing removal of the press bar therefrom and said passage also having a notch in one wall thereof and provided with an upstanding lip to provide a restricted opening for the notch.
