Patented Feb. 3, 1942 PAPER el oneuirma F Y,
Harry Hanson, Menomonie,;Wis. I I Application February 6, ieirseria n 3 7,723 j 4Claims.
. This invention relates to a paper carton cutter, and has for the primary object the provision'of a tool of .the above. statedcharacter which will permit a person to easily and quickly out any wall of a paper carton for the purpose of opening the latter and with a maximum amount of safety both to the person and to the contents of the I carton.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as th description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invenedge of the blade may b'e'brought closer or moved further from thewall: of the carton, or in other tion, reference is to be had to'the following dej scription and accompanying drawings, in'which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in'seotion showing a cutter associated witha wall of a, carton for the purpose of severing said wall and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation'showing the cutter adjusted for cutting a wall of a carton adjacent Figure 4 is a sectional view illustrating the cutting means.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary side elevation show ing a knife carrying plate.
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating a gauge element.
Figure 7 is a plan view illustrating the cutting blade. l
Referringin detail to the drawings, the nuwhich acts as a runner and has its forward end bent backwardly upon itself and rolled to form a handle 6. The handle inclines upwardly and rearwardly over the main plate. I
Fixed on the plate 5 at the trailing edge thereof and arranged at right angles to said plate is a knife carrying plate 1 provided with an arcuate slot 8 to receive set screws 9 and I0. I
Any type of flat blade may be used as a knife such as a razor blade indicated by the character H. The blade Ilis fastened onto the plate 1 by the set screw 9 and also by a set screw l2. The set screw I2 extends through an aperture 13 in the plat and which is located adjacent the lower edge of the plate so as to position theblade H as to bring on of its cutting edges to extend in a plane below the lower edge'of the plate I for cutting through a wall of a carton [4. By adjusting the set screw 9 in the slot 8 the cutting '35 meral 5 indicates the main plate of the device it is to be noted that the set screws are equipped with wing nuts l9 whereby saidset screws may words to vary the-distance of the cutting edge of the blade that may act in severing the wall of the carton. p p
An L-shaped gauge element I5 is supported on the plate I by the set screws l0 and I2 and is spaced from the bladell bya Washer 16 arranged on the set screw [2. It is preferable ,that' this washerb'e of the spring type to'permit the gauge element l5 tojyield relative to the blade. The corner ,A of the gauge element is adapted to ride the wall of the carton beingsev- 'ered for the purpose of regulating the depth of the cut made in th carton and consequently permit adjustment of the device so that'the carton wall can be cut without danger of severing I or cutting the contents of the carton.
By moving the set screw lo along the slot 8 the cornerA of the gauge element may beadjustedrelative to the wall of the carton. The
gauge element further acts as a guard or pro-, A tector against persons cutting a finger or the like while using thisdevice.
A'guard element l6'flin the form of anelongatedplate provided with a slot I1 extending endwise thereof is associated'with the device for the-purpose of guiding the movement of the tool along a wall of a-carton while the adjoining wall The guard element re-' ceives the'set'screws l0 and [2 through the slot I1 thereof and providesmeans whereby the guard element may be adjusted into and out of operative position. I
As shown in Figur 1, the guard element is in is severed by the blade.
an inoperative position and as shown in Figure -2 the guard, element isbrought into operative position;
It is also preferable that a washer orspacer l8 be arranged on the set screw 12 between the gauge element and th'eguard element. Further,
be readilyadjusted along the slot 8 and secured in any oftheir adjusted positions.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodimentof my invention, it will be; understood that minor changes in construction,
combination and arrangement of parts'may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the, invention, what I claim is: l
1. In a carton cutting tool, a combined handle and runner,-a cutting blade carrying means se-' cured to said combined handle and runner, a blade adjustably mounted on said means, a gauge element adjustably mounted on said means and associated with the blade for regulating the depth of cut that may be made by said blade, and a guard element adjustably mounted on said means and having operative and inoperative positions.
2. In a carton cutting tool, a runner plate, a handle at one end of said plate, a cutting blade carrying plate secured to the other end of the runner plate and arranged at right angles thereto and having an arcuately curved slot, set screws mounted for movement in said slot, a set screw carried. by said cutting blade carrying plate adjacent its lower edge, a blade having a slot receiving one of the first-named set screws second-named set screw.
and the 3. In a carton cutting tool, a runner plate, a
handle at one end of said plate, a cutting blade carrying plate secured to the other end of the runner plate and arranged at right angles thereto and having an arcuately curved slot, set screws mounted for movement in said slot, a set screw carried by said cutting blade carrying plate adjacent its lower edge, a blade having a slot receivlng one of the first-named set screws and the second-named set screw, and an L-shaped gauge element having apertures to receive one of the first-named set screws and the secondnamed set screw.
4. In a carton cutting tool, a. runner plate, a handle at one end of said plate, a cutting blade carrying plate secured to the other end of the runner plate and arranged at right angles thereto and having an arcuately curved slot, set screws mounted for movement in said slot, a set screw carried by said cutting blade carrying plate adjacent its lower edge, a blade having a slot receiving one of the first-named set screws and the second-named set screw, and an L-shaped gauge element having apertures to receive one of the first-named set screws and the secondnamed set screw, and a guard element including an elongated plate having a slot to receive the last-named set screw.
