Schroeder, Cleveland, Ohio, assignor to The Buckeye Forging Company, Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application July 14, 1938, Serial No. 219,223 I 14 Claims This invention relates to a container, more particularly to the means which provide for filling and closing the container for shipment and emptying it in a ready manner and to a process of mounting or incorporating one element of the filling, closing and emptying means in the con- .tainer wall. The invention is shown applied to a sheet metal container (for example, a barrel, drum and the like), but it is obvious that the walls of the container other than. the one on which the herein disclosed filling, closing and emptying means are mounted, may be formed of any desired material or combination of materials.
The filling, closing and emptying means herein disclosed may be mounted on any wall of the container, but is shown mounted on one head thereof usually termed the top wall.
One object of the invention is to provide animproved container wherein the support for the closure or closing element is rigidly secured to the container wall.
Another object of the invention is to provide for a container an improved combined closure and emptying device having a removable closing element and means which removably lock the closing element iii a predetermined position when loosened to permit emptying of the container.
Another object of the invention is'to provide for a container 2. combined filling, closure and emptying means adapted to be removably mounted in the container wall, whereby other means and devices may be mounted therein.
The present invention also comprehends certain improvements in the construction disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 175,264, filed November 18, 1937.

In the drawings (referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 9 inclusive), I indicates a sheet metal wall of a container, for example, a steel barrel or drum having a body and end walls, such wall being for illustrative purposes shown as the top wall thereof, on which is mounted a filling and emptying means, indicated as an entirety at 2, embodying my invention. these means consist of two members indicated at 3, 4, the former consisting of an annulus incorporated in and interlocked to the wall I, by a pressed on" process, whereby it is permanently held against movement rotatively and axially, relative to the wall. In carrying out this process, the wall I is formed with an opening and the metal there-around is drawn laterally to form a collar 5, having at its base and contiguous to the adjacent portions of the wall I, offset embossments 6, disposed in spaced relation circumferentially of the collar, six such embossments being As shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9,

To assemble the annulus on the wall I, it is positioned over the collar 5, with the embossments 6 seated in the recesses formed by the off-sets 9 and interlocked between the side walls thereof against turning relative to the wall I; then, by means of suitable dies or tools, the marginal portion of the collar is forced or bent outwardly and downwardly throughout its circumference into engagement with the base 8, as 'shown in Figs. 7'
and 8, thereby clamping the base 8 between and in rigid relation to the bent over portion of the collar and .wall I, the dies or tools serving to crimp the collar over the lugs formed by the oil-sets 9 and around the ends thereof, to effect an interlock between the collar 5 and base 8 on the upper side of the latter, so as to prevent relative rotative movement between the annulus 3 and wall I, an interlocked relation being provided between the wall I and lower side of the base 8 and between the collar 5 (which is an extended portion of the wall I) and the upper side of the base 8. By preference, the collar 5,
when bent or beaded, over and upon the base-8 extends substantially to the side wall I of the annulus 3, so that when the closure 4 is seated I therein and tightened in closed position, its' intoo far, that is, far enough to become disengaged from the annulus 8 and thus permit the container contents to gush out and be spilled, I
provide a stop means which limits the unscrewing of the closure at a predetermined position, namely, at that point away from the metal seat formed by the beaded over portion of the collar 5, where the side wall of the closure passes the lower end of the recess or vent II and effects a connection thereof with the space below the closure. The stop means employed includes a resilient element which yieldingly' locks the closure in the predetermined position but permits it to be further unscrewed and removed.
The locking means comprising a recess or opening formed in the wall of the closure 4 to provide an abutment and a resilient. element carried by or mounted on the annulus 3. v For example, the side wall of the closure 4 is formed with a recess to provide a shoulder I2 (see Figs. 5 and 6) extending up from the lower edge ofthe threads! and a section of resilient wire I8 having its op- ;posite ends anchored in openings I4 formed in the side walls lb of the lip Ia and coiled intermediate its ends to form a laterally extending dog I3a arranged to yieldingly engage and ride the threads 4 of the closure and to drop into the recess and engage the shoulder I2 when the closure is backed-up. As shown in Fig. 6, the dog I3a is disposed in a plane above the shoulder I2 when the closure is in closed position and yieldingly engages the threads 4' so as to engage the shoulder when backing-up of the closure takes place, as shown in .Figs. 9, 9a and 10, and may ner portion, or a gasket I0 thereon, may engage directly with such beaded portion of the collar 5 to insure liquid tightness. The inner sideof the side wall I. is provided with screw threads 1' which are engaged by the externally threaded wall 4' of the closure 4 to close or open the opening through the annulus 3, as later set forth. That side of the wall 1 adjacent the container chime or side is extended laterally and formed with converging, curvilinear walls terminating in a pouring lip Ia and substantially diametrically opposite the lip la the inner side of the wall I is formed with a recess II, which serves as a vent for the container during emptying thereof, as
shown by the arrows in Figs. 9 and 9a. It will be noted that the recess It extends from the upper edge ofthe wall I- downwardly to a point midway between such edge and lower end of the wall, so that when the closure 4 is unscrewed and backed-01f from its closed position far enough to position the inner edge of its threaded wall A above thelower end of the recess II, air is free topass therethrough and into the container. It

Figs. 11, 12 and 13 illustrate a modified form of resilient element, consisting of a clip It stamped from resilient sheet metal, one end having a foot I5a which is suitably riveted to the inner side of one side wall lb and its opposite end being arranged'to engage the shoulder I2 (see Figs. 11 and 12). In this form of construction I provide the clip with an arm I6 forming a finger hold, which permits the clip to be sprung outwardly out of engagement with the shoulder I2.
Fig. 14 shows another form of resilient element, consisting of a section of resilient wire I'I shaped to substantially fit within the walls of lip 1a and having an extended arm IIa the free end of which is arranged to engage the shoulder 12. That end of the wire I? remote from the arm is anchored in an opening IIb formed in the adjacent side wall Ib and an intermediate portion of the wire I! is bent laterally, as shown at I10 and anchored in a recess IIb' formed in adjacent portion of the lip la.
will be understood that when apart or all of r the contents of the" container is to be poured therefrom, it is placed on its side (if the annular 3 is mounted in the container head) as shown in Fig. 9a and then the closure 4 is backed-off to permit flow of, the contents from the lip la and venting through the recess I I.
It will be understood that the closure 4 is removable from the annulus (see dotted lines in Fig. 9) to permit filling of 'thecontainer, following which the closure is replaced and tightened into closed position. when it is desired to empty the container, it is laid on its side and the closure backed-up. To prevent backing-up of. the closure Figs. 15 and 16 illustrate another modified form of resilient element, consisting of a section 02 resilient wire I8 mounted in a recess I8a mounted on the inner side of the side wall I of the annulus 3 below its upper edge or rim. One end of the wire I8 is anchored in 'a laterally disposed opening formed in the side wall 1 and its opposite end portion extends into the lip Ia, its free end being bent inwardly .so as to engage the shoulder I2, as shown.
Fig. 17 illustrates another form of resilient element, consisting of a section of resilient wire I8 shaped to surround a portion of the annulus 8, below the rim thereof, one end of the wire being anchored in an opening formed in side wall I and its opposite end being bent at right angles inwardly, as shown at I9a and such end slidably fitting an opening l8b formed in the side wall and extending therethrough so that its free end may engage theshoulder l2, as shown. The side wall I is preferably formed with a recess 1.2: to accommodate the wire I9.
20 indicates a seal cap having a skirt 2| adapted to be crimped inwardly under the shoulder formed by the rim provided on'the annulus 3. The seal cap 20 is formed of thin metal capable of ready distortion and serves to detect unauthorized access to the closure 4.
22 indicates as an entirety an adapter which may be applied to the bung ring I of a container. In practice the bung ring I lends itself as a support for the riser,,23 of a suitable pump as shown in Fig. 19, whereby the container may be emptied of its contents, but where it is desired to pour the contents from the container, the riser 23 is removed andthe adapter 22 is then mounted in the ring i following which the container is laid on its side and the closure thereof backed-up. The adapter 22 consists of an annulus 3a: constructed similarly to the annulus 3 to removably receive a closure 4.1:, but in which the base 81: thereof is provided with an integral collar 24 on that side of the base 80: remote from the side wall In: of the annulus, the collar 24 being threaded externally and arranged to be threaded into the ring I. The adapter 22 being removable, the container may be provided with any form of bung ring and closed and sealed in any suitable manner for shipment and the adapter applied by the user when the container is to be emptied; or if desired, the adapter may be used by the shipper to close, the container for shipment.
It will be noted that in the form of construction herein disclosed only one opening is required in and through the container wall to permit filling and emptying thereof, since in the latter operation venting is provided for. By rea-- son of this arrangement only one ring and one closure is needed for each container, so that the cost of manufacturing each container is materially reduced.
It is also to be noted that this application embodies certain improvements in the construction of the annulus and its mounting as compared to the disclosure in my aforesaid application and that no claim is made herein to the subject matter therein disclosed.
To those skilled in the art to which my in vention relates many changes in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of the invention will suggest themselves without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
What I claim is:
1. A container having a sheet metal Wall formed with an opening and provided with a collar surrounding said opening, said collar contiguous to said wall being provided with spaced off-sets, in combination with anannulus provided with a over said lugs into engagement with the top or inner face of said base, whereby said collar is interlocked thereto.
2. A container having .a sheet metal wall formed with an opening and provided with a collar surrounding said opening, in combination with an annulus provided with an internally threaded side wall and an inwardly extending base at one end surrounding said collar, said side wall at one side of said annulus being extended outwardly to form a pouring lip and at another side thereof being formed on its inner face with a recess extending downwardly from its opposite end to form a vent, the marginal portion of said collar being bent laterally circumferentially into engagement with the upper side of said base, interlocking means between said collar and said base, and a closure removably threaded into said side wall and-arranged to engage the bent over portion of said collar to close the opening in said metal wall, said closure when backed-up serving to connect said pouring lip and said recess with said opening.
3. A container having a sheet metal wall formed with an opening and provided with a collar surrounding said opening, in combination with an annulus provided with an internally threaded side wall and an inwardly extending base at one end surrounding said collar, the marginal portion of said collar being bent laterally circumferentially over into engagement with the upper side of said base whereby said collar is secured thereto, a portion of said side wall at one side of said annulus being extended laterally to forma pouring lip and another por; tion being formed with a vent, a removable closure engaging the threaded side wall and arranged to close the said opening when screwed into engagement with said base, and releasable threaded side wall and an inwardly extending inner face, said off-sets fitting into said recesses to interlock said collar to the bottom or outer face of said base and the marginal portion of said collar being bent laterally circumferenhally means between said annulus and said closure for stopping the latter, when backed-oil, at a predetermined position to connect said pouring lip and vent with said opening.
4. A container having a sheet metal wall -formed with an opening and provided with a collar surrounding said opening, in combination with an annulus provided with an internally threaded side wall and an inwardly extending base at one end surrounding said collar, the marginal portion of said collar being bent laterally circumferentially over into engagement with the upper side of said base whereby said collar is secured thereto, a portion of said side wall at one side of said annulus being. extended laterally to form a pouring lip and another portion being former with a vent, a removable closure engaging the threaded side wall and arranged to close the said opening when screwed into engagement with said base, and releasable means between said annulus and said closure for stopping the latter, when backed-off, at a predetermined position to connect said pouring lip and vent with said opening, said releasable means consisting of a shoulder provided on the side portion of said closure and a resilient member mounted within said pouring lip and arranged to engage said shoulder.
5. A container having a sheet metal wall formed with an opening and provided with a collar surrounding said opening, in combination with an annulus provided with an internally threaded side wall and an inwardly extending base at one end surrounding said collar, the marginal portion of said collar being bent laterally circumferentially over into engagement with the upper side of said-base whereby said collar is secured thereto, a portion or said side wall at one side of said annulus being extended laterally to form a pouring lip and another portion being formed with a 'vent, a removable closure engaging the threaded side wall and arranged to close the said opening when screwed into: engagement with said base, and releasable means between said annulus and said closure for stopping the latter, when backed-oil, at a predetermined position to connect said pouring lip and vent with said opening, said releasable means consisting oi a shoul-' der provided on the side portion of said closure and a section 01 resilient wire anchored at its opposite ends in the walls of said annulus and provided intermediate its ends with a laterally upper side of said base whereby said collar is secured thereto, a portion of said side wall at one side of said annulus being extended laterally to form a pouring lip and another portion being formed with a vent, a removable closure engaging the threaded side wall and arranged to, close the said opening when screwed into engagement with tion or said collar being bent laterally circumferentially over into engagement with'the upper side or said base whereby said collar isseeuredthereto, a portion of said side wall at one side 0t lus and said closure for stopping-the latter, when backed-oil, at a predetermined position to connect said pouring lip and vent with said opening, said releasable means consisting of a shoulder provided on the side portion of said closure and a section of resilient wire mounted within said pouring lip'and having portions anchored to the walls thereof, one end oi. said wire being arranged to engage said shoulder.
9. A container having a sheet metal wall formed with an opening in combination with an annulus mounted at its inner end in said sheet metal wall in registry with said opening and provided with an internally threaded side wall and a seat, a portion of said sidewall at one side of said annulus being extended laterally to form a pouring lip and another portion being formed with said base, and releasable means between said annulus and said closure for topping the latter, when backed-oil, at a predetermined position to connect said pouring lip and vent with said open-' ing. said releasable means consisting of a shoulder provided on the side portion of said closure and a section of resilient wire mounted on the inner side of said side wall, one end of said wire being anchored to said wall and its opposite end being arranged to engage said shoulder.

A container having a sheet metal wallv formed with an opening and provided with a collar surrounding said opening, in combination with an annulus provided with an internally threaded side wall and an inwardly extending base at one end surrounding saidcollar, the marginal portion f said collar being bent laterally circumi'erenti lly over into engagement with the upper side of said base whereby said collar is secured thereto, a portion oi said side wall at one side of said annulus being extended laterally to iorm a pouring lip and another portion being formed with a vent; a removable closure engaging the threaded side wall and arranged to close the said opening when screwed into engagement .with said base, and releasable means between said annulus andsaid closure for stopping the latter, when backed-off, at a predetermined position to connect said pouring lip and vent with said opening, said releasable means consisting of a shoulder provided on the side portion oi said v closure and a section of re llent wire mounted on the outer side of said si ve'wall, one end of said wire being anchored'to 'said wall and'its opposite end being arranged to engage said shoulder.
8. A container having a sheet metal wall formed with 'an opening and provided with a collar surrounding said opening in combination with formed with an opening, in combination with an annulus mounted at its inner end in said sheet metal .wall in registry with said opening and provided with an internally threaded side wall and a seat, a portion of said side wall at one side of said annulus being extended laterally to form a pouring lip and another portion being formed with a vent, a removable closure engaging the threaded side wall and arranged to close the said opening when screwed into engagement with said seat, and releasable means between said annulus and said closure for stopping the latter, when backed-oil, at a predetermined position to connect said pouring lip and vent with said openshoulderprovided on said closure and a resilient member mounted within said pouring lip and arranged to. engage said shoulder.
11. A container having a sheet metal wall formed with an opening, in combination with an annulus mounted at its inner end in said sheet metal wall in registry with said opening and provided with an internally threaded side wall andseat, and releasable means between said annulus and said closure for stopping the latter, when backed-oil, at a predetermined position to connect 'said pouring lip and vent with said opening,
said releasable means consisting of a shoulder provided on said closure and a section of resilient wire anchored at its opposite ends in the walls of said annulus and provided intermediate its ends with a laterally extended portion arranged end surrounding said collar, the marginaipon to engage said shoulder.

13. A container having a sheet metal wall formed with an opening and provided with a collarvsurrounding said opening, in combination with an annulus provided with an internally threaded side wall and an inwardly extending base at its inner end surrounding said collar, said side wall at one side of said annulus being extended outwardly to form a pouring lip and at another side thereof being, formed on its inner face with a recess extending downwardly from its outer end to form a vent, the marginal portion of said collar being bent laterally circumferentially into engagement with the upper side of ,said base, interlocking means between said .collar and said baseyand a closure removably threaded into said side wall and arranged to close the opening in said metal wall, said closure when backed-up serving to connect said pouring lip and said recess with said opening.
14. A container having a sheet metal wall formed with an opening and provided with a .its opposite end to form a vent, interlocking means between said collar and said base, and a closure removably threaded into said side wall and arranged to engage the base to close the opening in said metal wall, said closure when backed-up serving to connect said pouring lip and said recess with said opening.
