This invention is especially adapted to be used in place of pins, which were formerly employed, to attach the free end of a roll of ribbon to the body thereof without injuring the underlying layers of said ribbon.
The improved clamp may also be used for holding the free end of a roll of tape, film, wire, thread or other flexible member Wound upon a spool or reel.
One object of this invention is to provide an improved clip-like device adapted to be detachably clamped frictionally to one side flange of a spool or reel, and having transverse means overlying the material Wound thereon to adjustably clamp the free end thereof and prevent it from unwinding therefrom.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved ribbon clamp ofthe above nature which will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, simple in construction, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very eflicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in View, which wil1 appear as the description proceeds, there have been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, two forms in Which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
Inv the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a spool of ribbon having one form of ribbon clamping device as it appears in operative position attached to a ilanged spool.
Fig. 2 is a transverse cross-sectional View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a broken sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged side view of the first form of ribbon clarnp embodying the features and principles of this invention.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged front view of the same.
Fig. 6 is a broken front View of a ribbon spool having a modified second form of clamp applied thereto.
Fig. 7 is a side View of the modified form of ribbon clamp.
Fig. 8 is a front View of the same.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference numerals designate like lparts throughout` theseveralviews, the numeral Hl denotes' a spool, "or reel, "having a cylindrical, central hub .nort'iori II 'anda pair' of Vilat annular side flanges I2] and' I3. at each'e'nd of the portion I I. `The sp'ool is shown with a roll I 4 offribbon or tape wound upon rits central, hub portion `II between the,u flanges l2 and I3; the outer free end of the' ribbon I4 being indicated by the numeral I5.
The clamping means for adjustably holding the free end I5 to the roll of ribbon I4 is shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, as comprising a length of wire I5 bent into the form of an outer flat spiral coil I'I, herein shown as having about one and three quarters turns, and provided with a straight intermediate portion I8 extending a short distance away from the spiral coil I1 in the plane thereof, and then having an inner straight transverse end portion I9 bent at rightangles to the plane of the spiral coil I'I and lying parallel to the layers of said ribbon. An
arcuate substantially rectangular plate 20 curved to substantially conform to the cylindrical surface of the roll of ribbon I4 is hingedly secured to the wire end portion I9 by means of a pair of apertured ears 2| and 22 struck up from said plat-e and surrounding the straight end portion I9 of said wire clamp.
In the modied form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive, the transverse inner wire end portion 23 is much shorter in length than the corresponding transverse end portion I9 of the rst described form, and no arcuate plate 20 is provided. In all other respects the two forms are the same.
Operation In use, the flat spirally coiled portion I'I of both forms of the invention will first be frictionally clipped over one of the side anges I2 or I3 in such a manner that the inner full-turn 24 of said coil I7 will lie outside the exterior surface 25 of the respective flange, and the outer substantially half-turn portion 26 will lie between the inside surface 21 of the respective ange and the roll I4 of ribbon Wound on the hub II. By means of this arrangement, the straight end portion I8 of the wire clamp will also lie between the flange and the roll of ribb-on I4. The transverse Wire end portion I9 and thearcuate plate 20 will rest upon the outer surface of the free end I5 of the ribbon, as shown in Figs. l to 3 inclusive, and adjustably hold it thereon.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 6, the short transverse Wire end portion 23 rests directly upon the free end I5 of the ribbon and clamps it securely against the roll I4.
After the desired length of ribbon I4 has been unwound and severed from the roll I4 on the spool I0, the spiral coil I'I will be frictionally clipped over one of the anges I2 or I3 and pressed inwardly as far as it will go. The arcuate plate 20 of the rst form or the bare short transverse end portion 23 of the modied form Will then be manually pressed against the newly cut free end I5 of the ribbon until the desired compression is obtained.
While there have been disclosed in this specifcation two forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosures, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming Within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to obtain Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device for clamping the free end of a ribbon Wound upon a spool having spaced flanges to hold said ribbon against the remaining underlying layers thereof, a flat spiral coil of Wire frictionally clamped to one flange of said spool with the smallest convolution thereof disposed outside of said flange and the largest convolution inside said ange, an intermediate straight section integral with and connected to the outer convolution of said coil and lying in the plane thereof, and a transverse portion bent at rightangles to the plane of said flat coil and integrally connected to said intermediate section, said device being adapted to be secured upon said spool with said straight section lying Within said flange and said transverse Wire portion overlying said ribbon and adjustably pressing inwardly against it.
2. In a device for clamping the free end of an elongated flexible member Wound upon a flanged spool, a flat spiral coil of Wire frictionally embracing one flange of said spool between the turns thereof, said wire coil having an intermediate straight section tangent thereto and lying in .the plane thereof, a transverse inner end portion connected to said intermediate section and bent at right-angles to the said plane, and an arcuate plate pivotally secured to said transverse end portion to adjustably press upon the free end oi said ilexible member.
