WHEELED SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,686, dated April 20, 1880.
Application filed December 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. LEROY A. SWEATT, of the town and county of Santa Clara, and State of California, have invented a Scraping and Grading Machine; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to certain improvements in scraping and grading machines; and my improvements consist in suspending under suitable framing mounted on wheels an adjustable scraper so regulated and adjusted by means of levers that while scraping its rear end may be raised so as to bring it to any desired angle, and that when filled its front end may be raised so as to lift it, with a load, entirely off the ground. When in this position it may be carried suspended between the wheels to any desired point, where, by still farther raising the rear end, the contents of the scraper may be dumped, as is more fully described in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
The frame-work or body A consists of suitable supports or braces mounted upon the four Wheels B, the whole being similar to the ordinary running-gear of a common farm-wagon. Under this body is suspended a scraper, O, by means of the hangers a b and the braces F. The hangers a are pivoted below to the front end of the scraper and above to a transverse bar or plate, D, one hanger being pivoted at each end of this plate, as shown. To the center of this plate or bar is a hinged curved rod, (1, to which is pivoted the operating-lever E. In scraping off the surface of ground to level it the front edge of the scraper is lowered by means of the lever and hangers to the required position, and the angle of the face of the scraper is regulated by means of the other hanger, b, The braces F take the rearward strain on the scraper.
If it is desired to utilize the scraper to lift up and carry the dirt away, the rear end is lifted by the lever E and the scraper set at an angle so that the movement of the vehicle over the ground will fill it. Then, when filled, the lever E is drawn forward, which operates the plate or bar D and pivoted hangers 0., thus lifting the front end up to the height of the rear end and holding the scraper level. The load is carried in this position until the dumping-place is reached, when a still farther forward motion of the lever E will elevate the rear end of the scraper higher, and thus dump the load.
Rack-bars may be used to control the movements of the levers.
I11 this way I am enabled to provide a convenient device for leveling and scraping, and which serves also for conveying quantities of earth, 850., away from one point to another and dumping it whererequired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
