My invention relates to improvements in stapling machines such as used in stapling the fabricated tops of shipping basket covers on the rim-forming hoops thereof, and more particularly to supports for the stapling heads of such machines.

The invention has for its primary object to provide a simply constructed support for the heads of such machines whereby said heads are always located over the edge of the covers so that the staples are driven in the exact center of the hoops notwithstanding irregularities in the contour of the latter.

Other, and subordinate, objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, my invention is more particularly concerned with a head I of a plural stapling machine adapted to overhang the edge of a basket cover 2 supported and fixed on a turntable 3, said head being of a type for driving two staples 4, 5, simultaneously, at opposite sides of the vertical center of the head downwardly into the rim forming hoop 6 of the basket cover to secure the fabricated top 1 to the hoop. Such machines being well known in the art, it is deemed sufficient for the present purposes to illustrate the head i and turntable 3 diagrammatically and to eliminate other parts of the machine.

According to my invention, the stapling head I is provided on the rear face thereof with a vertically bored boss 8 in the vertical center of the head fitting between the upper and lower, substantially horizontal, arms 9, lil, of a right angled bearing yoke H. A bolt l2 extending through said arms 9, l6, and the bore of the boss 8, and having a retaining cotter pin l3 extended therethrough, pivotally mounts said boss, and consequently the head I, in the yoke for lateral swinging of the head about a vertical axis.

A pair of right-angled, hook-shaped bracket arms id, l5, are bolted to the rear face of the head upon opposite sides of the vertical center of the head and to depend therefrom, said arms opening forwardly opposite a hoop 6 imposed on the turntable 3. A pair of head centering rollers it are mounted in said bracket arms 14, 15, respectively, by means of vertically disposed arbors H with nuts l8 thereon, said rollers being spaced upon opposite sides of the vertical center of the head i to rotate against the periphery of the hoop 6 immediately opposite the location for the staples i, 5. 4

In the rear of the yoke l l is a horizontal barlike presser lever i9 having one end pivotally mounted on a vertical shaft 2% forming a fixed part of the stapling machine, the arrangement being such that said lever is swingable horizontally about the shaft 20 toward and from the hoop 6 mounted on the turntable 3. The presser lever I9 is spring pressed toward the hoop 6, and turntable 3, by means, of a coil spring 2| interposed between its other end and a relatively fixed part 22, said spring being sleeved onto a bolt 23 extending from the lever and slidable through the fixed part 22. The presser lever is provided with a central rearwardly ofiset portion 24 from which the yoke H extends forwardly and to which said yoke is fixed as by bolts 25.

The operation of my described invention will be readily understood. The stapling head I is urged forwardly into overhanging position relative to the hoop 6, on the turntable 3, by the lever l9 and through the medium of the spring 2|, its proper position being established by engagement of the rollers I6 with the periphery of the hoop 6. As the turntable 3 is revolved to locate the staples in the stapling operation, all as will be understood, the rollers l6 riding against the periphery of the hoop 6 swing the head I about the bolt l2 under any irregularities in the contour of the hoop 6, and thus center the staples in the hoop 6 as they are driven through the top 1 into said hoop.

The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.

Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.

What I claim is:

1. In a machine for stapling a fabricated top to a circular hoop, the combination with means to rotatably support said hoop, and a stapling head of a horizontally extending lever-like support pivotally mounted for swinging movement toward and from the outer side of said hoop and spring tensioned against movement in the latter direction, of means to mount said head on said support for movement by the latter into and from overhanging relation to said top under movement of the support toward and from said hoop.

2. In a machine for stapling a fabricated top to a circular hoop, the combination with means to rotatably support said hoop, and a stapling head of a horizontally extending lever-like support pivotally mounted for swinging movement toward and from the outer side of said hoop and spring tensioned against movement in the latter direction, of means to mount said head on said support for movement by the latter into and from overhanging relation to said top under movement of the support toward and from said hoop, said last means comprising a pivotal connection between said head and support whereby said head is swingable to compensate for irregularities in the peripheral contour of the hoop.

3. In a machine for stapling a fabricated top to a circular hoop, the combination with means to rotatably support said hoop, and a stapling head of a horizontally extending lever-like support pivotally mounted for swinging movement toward and from the outer side of said hoop and spring tensioned against movement in the latter direction, of means to mount said head on said support for movement by the latter into and from overhanging relation to said top under movement of the support toward and from said hoop, said last means comprising a pivotal connection between said head and support whereby said head is swingable to compensate for irregularities in the peripheral contour of the hoop, and means on said head bearing against the periphery of said hoop to cause swinging of said head under rotation of the hoop in correspondence with the irregularities in the contour thereof.

4. In a machine for stapling a fabricated top to a circular hoop, the combination with means to rotatably support said hoop, and a stapling head of a horizontally extending lever-like support pivotally mounted for swinging movement toward and from the outer side of said hoop and spring tensioned against movement in the latter direction, of means to mount said head on said support for movement by the latter into and from overhanging relation to said top under movement of the support toward and from said hoop, said last means comprising a pivotal connection between said head and support whereby said head is swingable to compensate for irregularities in the peripheral contour of the hoop, and means on said head bearing against the periphery of said hoop to cause swinging of said head under rotation of the hoop in correspondence with the irregularities in the contour thereof and comprising a pair of rollers on said head upon opposite sides of the pivoted connection thereof.
