` '1 claims.

This invention relates to a novel pencil, pen or the like having incorporated advertising means.

'I'he invention has for an object to provide, in combination with a pencil, pen or the like, novel means for displaying advertising matter.

The invention has for a further object to provide, in a pencil, pen or the like, incorporated advertising means including means arranged to permit movement of an advertisement bearing element, whereby the eye is quickly attracted to the advertising matter and the observers attention thus invited thereto.

Other objects of this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be understood from the following detailed description of the same.

Illustrative embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a pencil provided with the novel means for displaying advertising matter according to this invention, a movable advertisement bearing element 'of said display means being shown in one position thereof; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view similar to that of Fig. 1, but showing the movable advertisement bearing element in another position thereof;'Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken on line 3-3 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 3, but drawn on an enlarged scale.

Figs. 5 to 7 are respectively transverse sectional views similar to that of Fig. 4, but showing various modifications of the advertising display means.

Similar characters of reference are employed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

In the embodiment of this invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the invention is illustrated as applied to the barrel I0 of a mechanical pencil, although it will be obvious that the same may be applied to various forms of pencils, pen or pencil cases, pens or the like.

To the upper end of the pencil barrel I0 is alxed a transparent chambered section within which is mounted advertising display means according to this invention. This chambered section comprises a tubular and preferably cylindrical body member II made of any suitable transparent material, such as glass or a transparent plastic composition, preferably the latter. couplingk element I3 of reduced diameter, the same being adapted to engage and be secured in the upper end portion of thepencil barrel I0. Preferably saidcoupling element vI3 is provided with `external screw-threads I4 to screw into said upper end of the pencil barrel. In like manner, said body member II is closed -and sealed at its upper end portion by an upper end plug I5. If desired, said upper end plug I5 is also provided with an external axially extending coupling element IB of reduced diameter, the same being adapted tol engage and be secured in an ornamental end-piece I'I which may be provided to furnish a pleasing finish to the combined structure.

Extending axially through the interior of said transparent body member II is a guide bar I8, which is preferably also made of transparent material corresponding to that of said body member II. The respective end plugs I2 and I5 are provided in their inner portions with centrally disposed sockets I9 to receive the respective ends of said guide bar `I8, thus rigidly supporting the latter in axial extension therebetween and centrally through the interior of said body member I I. Said guide bar I8, in one embodiment thereof shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is cylindrical in form, and, when of such shape, is provided with a longitudinally disposed spline or guide channel 23 extending from end to end thereof.

Slidably mounted around said guide bar I8 is a movable carrier sleeve 2| of a length substantially less than that of the chambered interior of said body member II. This carrier sleeve 2I is preferably in the form of a metallictube which is disposed between the guide bar I8 and the sides of the body member II, and thus concentric thereto. carrier sleeve 2I-1 the same is provided with feather or key means 22 adapted to enter and ride in said spline or guide channel 20 of the, guide bar I8. Suitably applied to the external surface of said carrier sleeve 2l is an advertising display 23 of desired character. In like manner, suitably applied to the external surface of said guide bar I8 is an additional stationary advertising display 24, the subject matterA of which is preferably divided into a plurality of independent subject sections, as, for example, a lower subject section A (see Fig. 1) and an upper subject section B (see Fig. 2). These subject sections may comprise either unrelated advertising matter, or advertising matter which is suitably correlated to that carried by the movable carrier The carrier sleeve 2| has a loose, easily sliding ntted relation to said guide bar Il so as to move freely along the same, and over the advertising display carried by said guide bar' Il. The interior of the chamber ofthe transparent body member is filled withA a .transparent liquid 25, such, for example, as a light transparent oil., 'I'his liquid content acts to control gravitation of the movable carrier sleeve 2| in such manner as to oii'er some resistance thereto, whereby the gravitational movement of said carrier sleeve is sufilciently retarded to assure a comparatively slow or gradual movement of the carrier sleeve from one end to the other of the chambered body member. Since the transparent liquid 25 fills the interior of the chambered body member, it cooperates with the transparent walls of the latter to produce suilicient magnification of the advertising displays, and especially those mounted on the guide bar Il, to effect the illusion v that said displays are viewed substantially at the outer surface of the wallsof said body member |I.

When the pencil is held point down, as shown in Fig. l, and the movable carrier sleeve 2| occupies its uppermost position in the chamber of the body member Il', the upperV subject B of the v' stationaryadvertising display 24 is covered and concealed by the surrounding carrier sleeve 2|, and. in such case, the advertising display 23 on the sleeve may be read in connection with the lower subject A of the stationary advertising display 24. Since, however, the carrier sleeve 2| is free to gravitate, when the pencil is held point down, as above mentioned, said carrier sleeve will, by gravity, be caused to move slowly y downward through the resisting liquid 25, thus gradually shutting from view said lower subject A, while at the same time disclosing to view the upper subject B of the stationary advertising display, whereby, when the carrier sleeve comes to rest at the lower end of the chambered body member Il, said latter display may thereupon be read in conjunction with the display carried by said carrier sleeve. It will `be apparent from the above description that the instant invention provides an interesting and eilective means, in combination with a pencil or like device, for the display of desired advertising matter, wherein, due to the movable carrier element thereof, an effect means is afforded for quickly attracting the eye and attention of the observer to the advertising matter.

iixed guide bar extending axially through saidJ section interior from end to end thereof, a carrier means slidable on said guide bar and adapted to move by gravity from end to end of said section interior through the .liquid contained therein, said guide bar bearing advertising display adapted to be concealed in part and exposed in part by movements of said carrier means along said guide bar, and said carrier means also bearing advertising display, said advertising displays being visible through said liquid and the transparent walls of said section.

In a device of the kind described, a. transparent chambered section having closed ends, a transparent liquid lling said chambered section, an advertising element submerged in said liquid but adapted to move under gravity endwise therethrough between the ends of said chambered section, and means within said chambered section to guide such endwise movement of said advertising element.

7. In a device of the kind described, a transparent chambered section having closed ends, a transparent liquid lling said section interior. a

,xed guide means extending axially of said section interior, a movable advertising means guided by said guide means and adapted to move by gravity between the ends of said section interior through the liquid contained therein, said guide means bearing advertising display, said movable advertising means and said advertising display of said guide means being visible through said liquid and the transparent walls of said section.
