This invention. relates to couch beds in general and more particularly to combination couch beds in which the couch bed in couch formation presents a loveV seat or two seat item and in bed formation embraces two or more sections.`
Among the objects of the present invention, it is aimed to provide a couch bed having atleast two movable bed sections, including frames which in open bed forming position are disposed in substantial alignment with one another and in closed couch position are spaced from one another to form a mattress receiving chamber.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide an improved three section couch bed in which the back forming section aligns with the two other sections including a seat section and a depressible section to form. a bed in one position and which in couch formation is erect with the vdepressible section depressed and the seat forming section disposed above or spaced from the depressible section.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide an improved couch bed in which in couch formation a love seat or two seat couch is produced and in bed formation a three section bed is produced. n
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

In the embodiment shown there is provided a main frame or sectionV I, to which are `operatively connected the frames or sections 2, 3 and 5. The frame 2 constitutes an interchangeable back and bed section, the frame 3 an interchangeable bed section and lower platform for a mattress receiving' chamber, and the frame d an interchangeable bed section andV seat section.
The main frame I includes theV angle iron side bars 5 and 6, the rear frame member 1 extending upwardly from the rear ends of the side bars 5 and 6. The side bars 5 and 6, in turn, are secured to the lower ends of the inner sides of the.y
upholstered arm portions 8 and 9.
The section 2 consists essentially of a rectangular frame YI0 having an upholstered back portion II mounted thereon. To the ends of the frame I there are secured the at metal bars I2, one end of each of which extends adjacent to the longitudinalside of the frame 2 but preferably slightly removed from the rear face thereof, and the other end of which bars I2 extend adjacent to the rear face but removed from the inner longitudinal side of the frame 2.
To the inner ends of the bars I2 there are'pivotally connected the links I3 and I4. The other ends ofthe links I 3 and I4 are connectedto the inner faces of the side bars 5 and 6, preferablyY a short distance removed from the rear endsl of the side bars 5 and 6. To the outer faces'of the bars I2, removed from the ends thereof adjacent the rear face of the frame 2', there are pivotally connected one of the ends of the bent links I5 and I6, the other ends of which links I5 and I6 I are pivotally connected tothe inner faces of the` side bars 5 andi 61,; respectively. At the upper end of the frame portion 'I there is secured the angle iron I'I with one of its webs extending horizontally and at the upper-end of the angle iron I1.
In. bed formation, theY links I3, I 4, I5 and I6 extend forwardly and the rear edges of the frame H3 rest on the angle iron Il, all as shown in Fig. 2. To counteract the weight of the back 2 when raising the same and to dampen the sound when vmoving from one position toanother the springs H5 and IIB are provided secured at one of their ends to the upper ends of the frame portion .'I and at their other ends to the links I5 and I6 adjacent their pivotalconnection with the bars I 2, I2.
The frames 3 and 4 may cooperatev with one another to form a two section bed in one position v and a seat with an` intervening mattress compartment in another position, or else cooperate g with the section 2to` form two parts ofY a three section bed, see Fig. 2, in one position and, in turn, an intervening mattress compartment with a seat to cooperate with the section 2 as the back forming portion of a couch, love seat or the like.
The frames 3 and 4 are essentially rectangular metal frame members I8 and I9 provided with the wire fabric springs 20 and 2|, respectively, as shown in Fig. 1.v The frame member I8 preferably has metal side bars 22 and 23 secured to one another by the underslung U-shaped bars 24 and 25. On the outer face of the wire fabric spring 2D there is secured the mattress section 26 which extends beyond the front edge of the frame member |8 a short distance, as shown in Fig. 3, and has hingedly connected to its front upper edge by a fabric hinge 21, the mattress section 28 which, see Fig. 3, is slightly narrower than the mattress section 26 so that when folded over upon the mattress section26 in couch or love seat formation its rear end will be spaced from the rear end of the mattress section 26. The rear edge of the mattress section 26 also is provided with a fabric sheet or fiap in area approximating that of the main outer face of the upholstered portion ofthe frame, o-r section 2, Vso that in bed formation, see Fig. 2, the
flap will effectively cover thedecorative outer face of the upholstered `portion I.
The frames 3 and 4 in the embodiment shown function as complements of one another, in other words, in bed formation, that shown in Fig. 2, they are disposed in alignment with one another and their aligned position is dependent one upon the other, and, in turn, in chair or love seat formation, that shown in Fig. 4, their superimposed position is dependent one upon the other. This interdependence results from the linkage now to be described.
The frame 3 has pivotally connected to the outer faces of its side bars 22 and 23, adjacent its rear ends, one of the ends of the links 29 and 30, the other ends of which links 29 and 30 are pivotally connected to the inner faces of the side bars and 6 a short distance from the rear ends of said side bars 5 and 6. To the outer faces of the intermediate portions of the side bars 22 and 23, in the present instance, slightly nearer to the front ends than to the rear ends of the side bars 22 and 23, there are pivotally connected the intermediate portions ofthe bent levers 3| and 32, one of the ends of said levers 3| and 32 being pivotally connected to the inner faces of the side bars 5 and 6 adjacent the front ends thereof, and the other ends of said levers 3| and 32 are connected to one of the ends of the bent levers 33 and 34, the other ends of which bent levers 33 and 34'a1e connected tothe legs 35 and 36, respectively. The intermediate portions of the levers 33 and 34, nearer to the pivots 31 with the legs 35 and 36 than to the pivots 38 with the levers 3| and 32, are pivotally connected at ||9 to the outer faces of the section 4.
To the inner faces of the front ends of the side bars 5 and 6 there are pivotally connected to one of the ends of the side bars 39 a footboard or baseboard 40. The baseboard 40 extends to the rear of the frontV ends of the sideV bars 5 and 6 when in horizontal position, see Fig. 2, such frontends as at 4| being rounded so that the baseboard 49 clears the same with facility when moving from a vertical to a horizontal position and the front edges of the side bars 5 and 6-serve as limiting stops for the baseboard 40 in vertical position, see Fig. 4, and the lower edges of the side bars 5 and 6, see Fig. 2, serve as limiting stops for the baseboard 40. The inner faces of the side bars 39 at 42 of the baseboard 40 are, in' turn, pivotally connected to one of the ends of thelinks 43 and 44, the other ends of the links 43Yand 44 being pivotally connected to the levers 3| and 32adjacent their pivots 45 with the side bars 5 and 6. The baseboard 40, from the foregoing, will be seen to determine the position of the 'section 3 either in its raised position, that shown in Fig. 2, or in its descended position, that shown in Fig. 4, although in descended position, that shown in Fig. 4, section 3 rests in the side bars 5 and 6 of the main frame and the sides 22 and 23 of the section 3 rest on the rubber bumpers |22 which are mounted on the angular braces |23 which serve as stifener bars for the main frame The movable sections or frames 3 and 4 are also connected by a pair of links 46 and 41 which are connected to one another by the underslung U-shaped bracing bar 48. One of the ends of the links 46 and 41 are, in turn, pivotally ccnnected to the inner faces of the side bars 22 and 23 of the frame 3 near the front ends of the frame 3, and the other ends of the links 46 and 41 are pivotally connected to the inner faces of the side bars 49 and 56 of the frame 4 by the pivots 5|.
The legs 35 and 36 in order to close and open with the movement of the frame or section 4 are pivotally Vconnected by the links 52 and 53 with the side bars 49 and 50, one of the ends of the links 52 and 53 being connected by the outer faces of the legs 35 and 36 a short distance removed from the pivot pins 31, and the other ends of the links 52 and 53 pivotally connected to the outer faces of the side bars 49 and 50 a short distance from the free ends th'ereof, see Fig. 2.
The links 46 and 41 are, in turn, connected to the levers 3| and 32 by the links 54 and 55, the link 54 being pivotallyV connected to the outer face of the link 46 and to the outer face of the lever 3| intermediate the pivot 38 and the pivotal connection of the lever 3| with the side bar 22, and the link 55 being pivotally connected to the outer face of the link 41 and to the outer face of the lever 32 intermediate the pivot 38 and pivotal connection of the lever 32 with the side bar 23.
In order to counteract the weight to dampen th'e sound when moving from one formation into another, the springs 56 and 51 are provided, the spring 56 being connected at one end to the link 46 and at its other end to the lever 3| intermediate the pivot 38 and the pivotal connection of the lever 3| and the link 54, and the spring 51 being connected at one end to the link 41 and at its other end to the lever 32 intermediate the pivot 38 and the pivotal connection of the lever 32 with the link 55.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the sections 3 and 4 can operate independent of the section to form a two section bed or seat at one time and at another time to form a mattress compartment. In other words, inone formation, that shown in Fig. 2, the sections 3 and 4 will be in alignment with one another, the section 3 being in its raised position with the links 46 and 41 in substantial alignment with the sections 3 and 4. In such bed formation the legs 35 and 36 will be in vertical position, that shown in Fig. 2, and the bed section 4 in part supported thereon, and otherwise cooperating with the links 46 and 41 and section 3 to be supported by the linkage inconnecting the bed sections 3 and 4 with one another and with the frame In such horizontal position the mattress section 28 will be swung over from the mattress section 26 about the hinge 21 to rest on the frame 4. Preferably, the lower face of the mattress section 26 is secured to the upper face of the frame 3.
As shown in Fig.` 2, preferably one face of the frame 4 is provided with an ornamental fabric covering 58. This fabric covering the face of the frame 4 which faces downwardly in the position shown in Fig. 2 and upwardly lin th'e love seat formation, that shown in Fig. 4. This fabric 58 particularly extends over the longitudinal end of the frame v4 adjacent the pivots 5I so that in love seat formation, it may cooperate with the covering on the baseboard 40 and on the cushion 59 to harmonize with the color scheme adopted for the love seat as a piece of furniture. In love seat formation, the mattress section 28 is folded over ontothe mattress section 26 and then appears in the chamber formed between the frame 3 and th'e frame 4, see Fig. 4. After the frames 3 and 4 have been so positioned, the cushion or cushions 59 may be placed upon the section 4 to complete the love seat assembly.
In the interest of the comfort of the sleeper or person who lies prone on the mattress elements 21 and 28 of the sections 3 and 4 in bed formation, it will be noted that in the first place the baseboard 49 drops away from the sections 3 and 4 so that under no circumstances may or will the body of the occupant depress the spring fabric of the section 3 into engagement with the upper edge of thebaseboard 40. In turn, itA will be noted that the ends of the frames 3 and 4 adjacent one another in bed formation do not have transversely extending bars in alignment withV the side bars 22,- 23 of the section 3 and the side bars 49 and 59 of the section 4. However, to brace the adjacent ends of the frames 3 and 4 in such bed formation, the underslung U-shaped bars 24 and 25 are provided and connected to the side bars 22 and 23 of section 3, and the underslung U-shaped bar 48 of the links 46 and 41 provided to cooperate with the adjacent ends of the side bars 49 and 50 of section 4 and yet permit the body of the occupant amply to depress the spring fabric of the sections 3 and 4 to satisfy his comfort. The other end of the frame 4, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, has its side bars connected to one another by the tie bar I I8.
When section 2 is used with sections 3 and 4 to form a back member in love seat formation, that shown in Fig. 4, and, in turn, a third bed section in bed formation, that shown in Fig. 2, preferably the links I3 and I4 are connected by the links 6B and EI, respectively, to the links 29 and 30, respectively. Links 60, 6I at one of their ends are pivotally connected to the inner faces of the links I3 and I4 near the lower ends of the links I3 and I4, and the other ends of the links 39 and 6I are pivotally connected to the outer faces of the links 29 and 39 near the lower ends of thelinks 29 and 30.
When so connected, see Figs. 2, 3 and 4, a bed formation is formed where the upholstered back portion I I cooperates with the mattress sections 23 and 28 to form a substantially aligned upper level with the flap I I I of the mattress section 28 extending over the outer face of the upholstered portion I I, see Fig. 2. If it is now desired to convert this couch bed into a love seat or couch, the several parts will first pass through the position illustrated in Fig. 3. In other words, initially the flap I I I will be folded over onto the upper face of the mattress section 26, thereupon the mattress section 28 folded over onto the flap II I and then the outer end of the section 4 raised when it will not only retract the legs 35 and 35 into the posiand I6 rearwardly at the same time' to raise the upholstered portion II into the inclined erect position shown in Fig. 4. Thereupon, the upholstered seat portion or portions 59may be placed in position on thesection 4.
The pivots 38 are provided with inward extensions I38, see particularly Fig. 6, to form limiting stops for receiving the edges of the'side bars 49 and 50 in love seat formation, that shown in Fig. 4.
In order to eliminate undue movement of the respective parts when the sections are in love seat arrangement, there is formed on'the links 52 and 53 the inwardly extending studs 62 and 63, respectively. These studs in love seat arrangement, see particularly Fig. 4, will engage the legs 35 and 3B, in turn, to press such legs against portions of the levers 33 and 34 and such portions of the levers 33 and 34 against the outer faces of the side bars 49 and 50 in wedging relation with one another.
It is obvious that various changes and modiiications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

The combination of a fixed frame, a first bed section, a pair of levers operatively associating said first bed section to said frame to control the elevation of said first bed section, a second bed section, a first pair of links operatively connecting said second bed section to said first bed section, legs for said second bed section, a second pair of links operatively connecting said legs to said second bed section, a second pair of levers operatively connecting said second bed section to said legs and to said first pair of levers, a third pair of links operatively associating said fixed frame with said first bed section and parallel to a pair of one of the arms of said first pair of levers, said first bed section being lowered when said second bed section is swung over into seat formation to form a mattress compartment between said two bed sections, a first mattress section secured to the upper face of said first bed section, and a second mattress section pivotally connected to said first mattress section and movable either to be superimposed upon said rst mattress section when said iirst bed section is depressed or to be swung over and rest on said second bed section when said second bed section is disposed in alignment with said rst bed section that is in bed formation.

The combination of a fixed frame, a iirst bed section, a pair of levers operatively associating said iirst bed section to said frame to control the elevation of said first bed section, a second bed section, a first pair of links operatively connecting said second bed section to said iirst bed section, legs for said second bed section, a second pair of links operatively connecting said legs to said second bed section, a second pair of levers operatively connecting said second bed section to said legs and to said first pair of levers, a third pair of links operatively associating said fixed frame With said first bed section parallel to a pair of one of the arms of said first pair of levers, an interchangeable back and bed section, two pairs of links pivotally connecting said interchangeable section to said fixed frame, a fourth pair of links operatively associating said third pair of links with one of the pairs of said latter two pairs of links, and springs operatively connecting a pair of said two pairs of links with said fixed frame.

The combination of a iixed frame, a first bed section, a pair of levers operatively associating said first bed section to said frame to control the elevation of said first bed section, a second bed section, a iirst pair of links operatively connecting said second bed section to said first bed section, legs for said second bed section, a second pair of links operatively connecting said legs to said second bed section, a second pair of levers operatively connecting said second bed section to said legs and to said iirst pair of levers, a third pair of links operatively associating said fixed frame with said iirst bed section parallel to a pair of one of the arms of said iirst pair of levers, an interchangeable back and bed section, two pairs of links pivotally connecting said interchangeable section to said fixed frame, and a fourth pair of links operatively associating said third pair of links with one of the pairs of said latter two pairs of links, said fixed frame having a supporting frame portion to receive and aid in supporting said interchangeable section in bed formation.

The combination of a iixed frame, a rst bed section, a pair of levers operatively associating said first bed section to saidframe to control the elevation of said iirst bed section, a se'cond bed section, a rst pair of links operatively connecting said second bed section to said first bed section, legs for said second bed section, a second pair of links operatively connecting said legs to said second bed section, a second pailr of levers operatively connecting said second bed section to said legs and to said first pair of levers, a third pair of links operatively associating said iixed frame with said iirst bed section parallel to a pair of one of the arms of said iirst pair of levers, an interchangeable back and bed section, two pairs of links pivotally connecting said interchangeable section to said xed frame, a fourth pair of links Voperatively associating said third pair of links with one of the pairs of said latter two pairs of links, said fixed frame having a supporting frame portion to receive and aid in supporting said interchangeable section in bed fdrmation, andsprings operatively connecting a pair of said two pairs of links with said supporting frame portion.

The combination of a fixed frame, a first bed section, a pair of levers operatively associating said rst bed section to said frame to control the elevation of said first bed section, a second bed section, a iirst pair of links operatively connecting said second bed section to said first bed section, legs for said second bed section, a second pair of links operatively connecting said legs to said second bed section, a second pair of levers operatively connecting said second bed section to said legs and to said first pair of levers, and a third pair of links operatively associating said fixed frame with said first bed section parallel to a pair of one of the arms of said rst pair of levers, the pivotal connection of said first pair of levers and said second pair of levers including extensions to engage and aid in supporting said second bed section in seat formation. f

The combination of a fixed frame, a first bed section, a pair of levers operatively associating said fifrst bed section to said frame to control the elevation of said first bed section, a second bed section, a iirst pair of links operatively connecting said second bed section tosaid iirst bed section, legs for said second bed section, a second pair of links operatively connecting said legs to said second bed section, a second pair of levers operatively connecting said second bed section to said legs and to said iirst pair of levers, a third pair of links operatively associating said iixed frame with said first bed section parallel to a pair of one of the `arms of said first pair of levers, and extensions on said second pair of links engaging said legs in turn to press parts of said second levers against the sides of said second bed section in seat formation to prevent undue movement of the operating parts in sea-t formation.

The combination of a fixed frame, a first bed section, a pair of levers operatively associating said first bed section to said frame to control the elevation of said iirst bed section, a second bed section, a first pair of links operatively connecting said second bed section to said first bed section, legs for said second bed section, a second pair of links operatively connecting said legs to said second bed section, a second pair of levers operatively connecting said second bed section to said legs and to said iirst pair of levers, a third pair of links operatively associating said iixed frame with said iirst bed section parallel to a pair f one f the arm's of said rst pair of levers, an interchangeable back and bed section, two pairs of links pivotally connecting said interchangeable section to said fixed frame, a fourth pair of links operatively associating said third pair of links with one of the pairs of said latter two pairs of links, a first mattress section secured to the upper face of said rst bed section, a second mattress section pivotally connected to said first mattress section and movable either to be superimposed upon said first mattress section when said first bed section is depressed or to be swung over and rest on said second bed section when said second bed section is disposed in alignment with said first bed section that is in bed formation.

The combination of a xed frame, a first bed section, a pair of levers operatively associating said iirst bed section to said frame to control the elevation of said first bed section, a second bed section, a first pair of links operatively connecting said second bed section to said first bed section, legs for said second bed section, a second pair of links operatively connecting said legs to said second bed section, a second pair of levers operatively connecting said second bed section to said legs and to said rst pair of levers, a third pair of links operatively associating said xed frame with said first bed section parallel to a pair of one of the arms of said first pair of levers, an interchangeable back and bed section, two pairs of links pivctally connecting said interchangeable section to said fixed frame, a fourth pair of links operatively associating said third pair of links with one of the pairs of said latter two pairs of links, a first mattress section secured to the upper face of said first bed section, a second mattress section pivotally connected to said first mattress section and movable either to be superimposed upon said rst mattress section when said rst bed section is depressed or to be swung over and rest on said second bed section when said second bed section is disposed in alignment with said first bed section that is in bed formation, and a flap connected to said nrst mattress section and movable to be stretched across said interchangeable section in bed formation.
19. The combination of a fixed frame, a rst bed section, a pair of levers operatively associating said rst bed section to said frame to control,
the elevation of said rst bed section, a second bed section, means for operatively connecting said second bed section to said first bed section, legs for said second bed section, a rst pair of links operatively connecting said legs to said second bed section, a second pair of levers operatively connecting said second bed section to said legs, and to said rst pair of levers, and a second pair of links operatively associating said fixed frame with said rst bed section and parallel to a pair of one of the arms of said first pair of levers.

A combination of a fixed frame. a first bed section, a pair of levers operatively associating said iirst bed section tosaid frame to control the elevation of said first bed section, a second bed ection, means for operatively connecting said second bed section to said first bed section, legs for said second bed section, a rst pair of links operatively connecting said legs to said second bed section, a second pair of levers operatively connecting said second bed section to said legs and to said first pair of levers, a second pair of links operatively associating said xed frame with said rst bed section and par-allel to a pair of one of the arms of said rst pair of levers, an interchangeable back and bed section, two pairs of links pivotally connecting said interchangeable section to said xed frame, and a third pair of links operatively associating said second pair of links with one of the pairs of said latter two pairs of links.
