These deviating line portions provide grip tabs ll projecting from the adjacent edges of the carbon sheets. The purpose of this grip tab structure is to provide means for selectively separating the carbon sheets of a severed record set or unit from the record sheets thereof in a man-. ner as fully described in the ConklinPatent No. 2,083,295, issued June 8, 1937 to which reference is made for a more complete disclosure of this feature.
For attaching the constituent elements of the assembly together, fastening devices are provided substantially as set forth in the Conklin patent mentioned. These fastening devices include staples or filamentary binders I 8 longitudinally spaced at intervals along the assembly and engaging and extending through the assembly strips. These staples I 8 may be constructed of textile thread or light metallic wire and are positioned directly upon the severance .lines It of the record strips and extend through the assembly from top to bottom thereof. They will thus be freed from the record strips upon severance alongthe lines IS. The staples pass through the bases of the grip tabs IQ of the carbon sheets so as to hold said sheets together after separation thereof from the assembly as fully described in the Conklin patent.
The manifolding assembly is preferably folded V ln-zigzag formation along the transverse severance lines to provide a zigzag folded supply pack 20 which is convenient for handling and loading into the various writing machines. The assembly is shown in Fig. 1 as being thus folded only on each alternate transverse line II, thus presenting two record leaves at the top of the zigzag pack or in other wordsfthe assembly is folded two up. Interleaved in manifolding relation with the record and transfer strips is air-envelope series 2| which is shown in detail in Pig. 4. This envelope series includes a multiplicity of individual envelopes 22, which may be of any preferred known construction. having receiving openings 23 leading toth'e inner receiving compartments and having closure flaps 24 adapted to fold over the openings 23. These attachments are preferably positioned at the longitudinal center line of the envelope assembly. Theattaching part 25 of each l0 envelope flap 24 is preferably separated from the main'part of the flap by transverse weakened severance lines 26 which also may be formed by perforating, scoring, slitting, etc., thus providing for ready detachment of the envelopes from each other.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 this series of connected envelopes is positioned in manifolding relation, in the record assembly with the upper inscription receiving surfaces in transfer relation with the lower surface of the upper transfer strip II. The longitudinal spacing of the severance lines 26 ofthe envelope attachments is substantially the same as that of the severance lines I! and ii of the record and transfer strips, the
5 lines 26 being positioned respectively substantially in depthwise alignment with the lines 15 and I6. Thus it will be seen that the filamentary binders I! will extend directly through the corresponding severance lines 26, thus binding the an envelope series in its correct inscription receiving relation in the assembly. As shown in Fig. 3 the envelopes 22 are slightly shorter transversely of the assembly than the width of the record strips Ill so that the envelope ends are protected and positioned so as to avoid engagement with or catching upo n external objects during handling of the assembly. The envelope series will be folded into the supply pack 20 in the manner above described for the record strips. .It will be noted that the envelopes 22 of the series are in the form of units having longitudinally spaced body portions separate fromv each other, these body portions being connected by the envelope closure flaps extended in connecting positions away from their normal closing positions. .By
means of this structural arrangement envelopes closely approximating standard construction may be utilized. The fastening devices is are positioned intermediate the adjacent envelope body parts respectively so as to avoid any mutilation thereof by the fastening devices.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that each envelope 22 of the envelope series will be positioned in one of the sets of record and transfer'sheets in pomtion to receive inscriptions at the time that the record sheets are inscribed.
While this improved record assembly including the envelope series may be utilized for recording various business transactions, the utilization thereof for handling payrolls is particularlymen- The envelopes may thus be utilized for containing the currency or the like together with one of the inscribed record sheets giving the complete data. Many other uses will be susmted to those familiar with the art, especially for 7 recording transactions wherein shame and address is required, together-with a relatively small amount of additional data, and for mailins m ses. In some instances it is desired to omit from the envelope surface certain of the inscriptions that are written upon the original record strip Hi. In such cases a portion of the transfer coating l2 of the upper transfer strip will be omitted as indicated at 28 in Fig. 2. The area 28 of thistransfer strip will be entirely free of transfer material so that a portion of the inscription will not be transferred to the envelope surface. The
area 28 is shown as being positioned next tothe envelope flap 24, and it may also be extended to overlap a portion of the envelope surface at the bottom of the envelope opposite to its opening 23. Such clean or non-transfer areas 28 may extend entirely across the. transfer strip H or its bounds may be limited so as to omit the inscriptions as desired. Thus in cases where it'i's desired to omit from the envelope all data except name and address, this may be readily accomplished by extending the limits of the non-transfer area 28.
As suggested in Fig. each of the record strips 29 of the assembly may be provided with longitudinal feed bands 30 at both of its longitudinal margins. These feed bands are provided with feed apertures M as described above. Otherwise the record strips 28 will be similar to the record strips Ill above described and they will be similarly arranged in the manifolding assembly. The envelope series together with carbon strips will be interleaved with two or more of the record strips 29 in the same manner as described above.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, continuous interleaved record strips, a plurality of envelopes in series formation and having connections with each other and interleaved in manifolding relation with said record strips, said envelopes having body portions separate from each other and having closure flaps included respectively in said envelope connections and extended in non-closing positions, transverse weak- .ened severance lines arranged in depthwise groups in saidstrips at a series of longitudinally spaced points along the assembly and substantially in depthwise alignment respectively with certain of said envelope connections, and attachments binding said strips and envelopes together at spaced points along the assembly and positioned respectively directly on said severance lines and at points respectively intermediatesaid body portions of respective adjacent envelopes.
2. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, continuous interleaved record and transfer strips, a plurality of envelopes having body portions separate from each other and longitudinally spaced apart, said envelopes being arranged in series formation and interleaved in manifolding relation with said record and transfer strips, connections bridging the spaces between respectively adjacent envelope body parts and connecting the envelopes together in the series, transverse weakened severance lines arranged in depthwise groups in the strips at a series of longitudinally spaced points along the assemblyand substantially in depthwise alignment respectively with certain of said envelope connections, and longitudinally spaced filamentary binders spaced along the assembly for binding the assembly partstogether and being positioned respectively substantially upon said transverse weakened severance lines and respectively intermediate said body portions of adjacent said envelopes. 4
3. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, continuous interleaved record and transfer strips, a series of envelopes having body portions separate from each other and longitudinally spaced apart, said envelopes being interleaved in manifolding relation with said record and transfer strips, transverse weakened severance lines in the strips arranged in depthwise groups at a series of longitudinally spaced points along the assembly and substantially in depthwise alignment respectively with certain of said envelope connections, and longitudinally spaced filamentary binders spaced along the assembly for binding the assembly parts together and being positioned respectively substantially upon said transverse weakened severance lines, said binders being positioned respectively intermediate adjacent envelope body parts and having readily breakable connection respectively with said envelope connections so as to retain the envelopes in position in the assembly and to release them upon breaking of said breakable connections.
4. In a' manifolding assembly, in combination,
continuous interleaved recqrd strips, a series of envelopes having connections with each other and interleaved in manifolding relation with said record strips, each said envelope connection, in-
cluding an envelope closure flap in extended nonclosing position and having a readily detachable attachment including a transverse weakened severance line, transverse weakened severance lines in the record strips arranged in depthwise groups at a series of longitudinally spaced points along the' assembly and substantially in depthwise alignment respectively with said weakened lines-of said envelope connections, and longitudinally spaced filamentary binders for binding the assembly parts together and respectively positioned substantially on said transverse weakened severancelines of the strips and envelope connections.
5. In a manifolding assembly, in combination,

In av manifolding assembly, in combination, continuous interleaved record strips, 9, series of envelopes having conn'ections'with each other and interleaved in manifolding relation with said record strips, said envelope connections including attaching flaps projecting respectively from the envelope sealing flaps and having connection with the adjacent envelopes, said attaching flaps having weakened severance lines, and filamentary binders for binding the assembly parts together and respectively passing through said weakened severance lines of said attaching flaps.
'7. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, continuous interleaved record and transfer strips, and a series of envelopes having connections with each other and interleaved in manifolding relation with said record and transfer strips, each of said envelopes being positioned in inscription transfer relation with one of said transfer strips which has parts of its transfer face free of transfer material for selective trans fer inscriptions to the envelope, said envelope connections including attaching flaps projecting respectively from the-envelope edges and having connection with the adjacent envelopes, and attachments connecting the said strips and envelopes together at spaced points along the assembly and including connections with the respective said envelope connections.
8. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, continuous interleaved record and transfer strips, a series of envelopes having connections with each other and interleaved in manifolding relation with said record and transfer strips, each of said envelopes being positioned in inscription transfer relation with one of said transfer strips which has parts of its transfer face free of transfer material for selective transfer inscriptions to the envelope, said envelope connections including attaching flaps projecting respectively from theenvelope edges and having connection with the adjacent envelopes, said attaching flaps having transverse weakened severance lines, and'filamentary binders for binding the assembly parts together and passing through said weakened severance lines of said attaching flaps.
9. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, continuous interleaved record and transfer strips, a series of envelopes having connections with each other and interleaved in manifolding relation with said record and transfer strips, each of said envelopes being positioned in inscription transfer relation in the assembly, said envelope connections respectively including envelope closure flaps. in extended non-closing positions in the assembly and having connection with respectively adjacent envelopes, and attaching means for the assembly parts respectively positioned between adjacent envelopes of said series.

In a manifolding assembly, in combination, continuous interleaved record strips, a plurality of envelopesin series formation and having connections with each other and interleaved in manifolding relation with said record strips, said envelopes having body portions separate from each other and having closure flaps included respectively in said envelope connections and extended in non-closing positions, transverse weakened severance lines arranged in depthwise groups in said strips at a series of longitudinally spaced points along the assembly, and transverse weakened severance lines positioned respectively in said envelope connections and in substantially depthwise alignment respectively with said severance lines of the strips.
11. In a manifolding assembly, in combination, continuous'interleaved record strips, a plurality of envelopes in series formation and having connections with each other and interleaved in manifolding relation with said record strips, said envelopes having body portions separate from each other and having closure'flaps included respectively in said envelope connections and extended in non-closing positions, transverse weakened severance lines arranged in depthwise groups in said strips at a series of longitudinally spaced points along the assembly, transverse weakened severance lines positioned respectively in said envelope connections and in substantially depthwise alignment respectively with said strip severance lines, and attachments binding said strips and envelopes together at spaced. points along the assembly and positioned respectively directly on said severance lines of the strips and envelope connections.
