An object of the invention is to provide an improved form of connection 'between the stem and bowl extension which will be inexpensive to manufacture and which 'will give a tightly sealed joint that will not be easily broken or accidentally separated.

Another object of the invention is to provide a double joint of the push type between the stem and bowl extension so that there will be two cylindrical surfaces on the stem frictionally engaging cylindrical surfaces provided on the bowl extension.

Another object of the invention is to provide a cup washer forming one ofthe surfaces frictionally engaging an internal cylindrical surface so that an effective seal will be provided betweenv the bowl and stem.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a passage for the `smoke from the bowl to the stem in the form of a metallic sleeve so that the smoke will not contact any portion of the wood or brier forming the bowl extension, the end of this sleeve being provided with the cup washer forming a part of the seal between the extension and stem.

And iinally, it is an object to form a stem having a flat mouth piece and elongated opening at the mouth end with an enlarged central portion to facilitate the passage of a pipe stem cleaner therethrough,

With the above and other objects in view the invention includes the features of construction and operation set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

In the accompanying drawing annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification, 1 have shown the invention embodied in a standard form of brier pipe but it will be understood that the invention can be otherwise embodied and that the drawing is not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims appended to this specification being relied upon for that purpose.

Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a pipe provided with the present invention, the bowl and stem being separated to more clearly show their construction;

In the above-mentioned drawing there has been shown but two embodiments of the invention which are now deemed preferable, but it is to be understood that changes and modications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Briefly, and in its preferred aspect, the invention may include the following principal parts: First, a bowl having an integral extension;

secon-d, Va sleeve .threaded or forced within an opening extending through the extensionof 'the bowl; third, a cup washer mounted upon the-v outer or free end of the sleeve; and fourth, a tenon or sleeve forced or molded within the stem and having the internal and external surfaces at its outer end engaging respectively over the cup washer and within an enlarged portionof the opening through the bowl extension.

Referring more in detail to the figures of the drawing, I provide, as shown in Fig. 1,'a bowl l0 having an integral extension li I. This member may be made of brier or of any other usual material for pipe bowls. Extending longitudinally through the extension Il is a metal sleeve I2, a longitudinally splined portion i3 of its outer surface being forced or pressed within'the central opening of thebowl extension. At the inner end of the sleeve I2 is an extension I4 extending to thetobacco cavity of the bowl. At the outer end of the sleeve I2 is a head portion l5 which preferably may beknurlecl or otherwise roughened and over which a cup washer I6 may be fitted, this member being preferably of leather. The extreme outer end of the sleeve I2 may have a reduced extension to enter the tenon I8 within the stem I9.

I claim as my invention:

1. A pipe having a bowl and bowl extension, said extension having a recess and being provided with a metal sleeve retained therein, a cup washer of compressible material on the outer end 0f said sleeve having both ends thereof spaced l from the freeend of the sleeve and the bowl extension, and a hollow stem abutting against the end of said extension, said stem having a hollow sleeve-like metal tenon retained within the inner wall of said stern and extending therefrom, whereby saidstem and tenon form an elongated smokefcooling recess, said tenon entering and engaging the internal cylindrical surface of the recess formed in said extension, and said cup washer entering said tenon and forming with said tenon a seal between saidY extension and stem, said washer constituting the only pressure applying element between the ends of the tenon.

2. A pipe having a bowl and bowl extension, said extension having a recess and beingpro-` vided with a metal sleeve retained therein, a knurled head formed onthe outer end of said sleeve, fitting over said knurled head having both ends thereof spaced from. thev free end of the sleeve and the bowl extension, and a hollow stem abutting against said extension and having a hollow sleeve-like metal tenon secured Within the inner wall of said stem and extending partially therefrom tofrictionally engage within the internal cylindrical surface of the recess formed within the end of said extension, said stem and tenon forming an' elongated smoke-cooling recess,l and said cup washer ventering said tenon and-forming a seal between said bowl extension'and stem, said washer constituting the vonly`.pressure applying elementbetween the' ends'o'f the tenon..
