WITNESS fOSW/Z f? @0f/yan y ArTo RNEYS Patented Oct. 2.1,'1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELECTRIC OUTLET PLUG Joseph Patrick Corrigan,y Leavenworth, Kans.
Application July 1, 1940, Serial No. 343,482 1 Claim. (Cl. 173-361) lll With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel detalls of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention. K
In the accompanying vdrawing forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an electric outlet plug constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the plug showing the extension cord entering the side thereof.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the plug.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, Ill designates the plug body. the same having a longitudinal bore I I having its lower end portion I2 .and its upper end portion I3 uniformly enlarged. A plunger I4 is slidably mounted in the bore and is provided at its lower end with a head I5 which normally occupies the enlarged lower end portion I2 of the bore,. and extends to about the lower end of the body.
A cylindrical button I6 is 'attached to the upper end of the plunger above the body by a screw threaded connection Il, or other means, and the lower .end of the button is disposed in the upper enlarged portion I 3 of the bore.`
A helical spring I8 is sleeved on the plunger I4 between the lower end of the button and 'a shoulder I9 at the lower end of the upper enlarged portion I3 of the bore. The spring normally holds the head I5 of the plunger in the lower end portion of the bore.
The body III of the plug is provided at the top with a pair of oppositely disposed horns underneath which the iirst two lingers of the operators hand may be placed while the thumb depresses the button I6 to move the head I5 of the plunger out of the enlarged lower end portion I2 of the bore of the body and impinge the same against an outlet cover or female plug connector to disengage the male plug from the female connectlon.
The extension cable 2I is led through an opening 22 in the side of the body I0 of the plug. The ends of the wires of the cable are slid laterally to pass around the head I5 of the plunger I4 and are attached to respective screws 24 which secure 'Conventional prongs 25 in a recess 26 in the bottom of the plug body.
From the above description it is thought that g the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explanation.
What is claimed is:
A male electric outlet plug comprising a body having an axial bore provided with uniform enlarged upper and lower ends,ma plu'nger slidably mounted in the bore provided at its lowerend with a head normally disposed in the enlarged lower end of the bore, a cylindrical button secured to the upper end of the plunger extending above the body and having its lower end disposed in the upper enlarged end of the bore, a helical spring sleeved on the plunger between the lower `end of the button and a shoulder formed at the lower end of the upper enlarged end of the bore, said spring normally holding the head of the plunger withdrawn into the enlarged lower end of the bore, there being'an orifice for conductor wires in the side of the body remote from the exposed end of the button, terminal prongs secured to the body adjacent said orice and on opposite sides of the enlarged lower end of the bore, said body being provided at its upper end with oppositely disposed horns underneath which the operators fingers may be engaged to pull outwardly on the horns while the thumb presses down upon the button to impinge the head of the plunger against a female connector to withdraw the body and the prongs from engagement with the female connector.
