Finn. This type of pincer comprises crossed levers, the longer ends of which are formed as handles for operating the pincer and the shorter ends of which are formed as gripper jaws.
-In lasting shoe uppers it is often desirable to treat. portions of the upper by means of hand lasting pincers and in operating on an upper with handlasting pincers it is usual to grip the lasting margin in the jaws of the pincers, then, to rock the pincers in a direction to tension the upper heightwise, and finally, while said heightwise tension is maintained, to move the pincers bodily in a direction to draw the lasting margin in against the last and over aninsole on the last bottom. In lasting heavy uppers, such, for example, as uppers provided in mens work shoes, it is difiicult to move the pincer in a direction to draw the upper in against the last after it has been tensioned heightwise due to the frictional resistance to movement of the fulcrum element of the pincer upon the insole.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hand lasting pincer which will readily move in a direction to draw the upper inwardly against the last and over an insole on the last bottom while heightwise tension imparted to the upper by the pincer is maintained. With the above object in view, the present invention in one aspect thereof consists in the provision in a hand pincer of the type above referred to of a fulcrumelement and a member on which said element may either fulcrum to permit rocking movement of the pincer or move longitudinally to draw the lasting margin of the upper in against the last and over an insole on the last bottom. The illustrated pincer has for a fulcrum element a headed pin secured to the shorter end of one of the crossed levers of the pincer and said pin operates against a work-engaging plate to which it is connected by a member secured to said plate and spaced above its central portion. The head of the fulcrum pin is confined between the raised central portion of said member and the top of said plate, said member being slotted to permit the head of the fulcrum pin to slide upon the top of the plate in the direction of the length of the pincer in order to draw the lasting margin of the upper in against the last.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing and pointed out in-the appended claims.

Referring to Fig. 1-, the illustrated pincers comprise crossed levers l and I2 fulcrumed to each other at M and having their short arms l6 and I8 curved downwardly and provided with uppergripping teeth. Extending downwardly from the arm It at a point between the gripping teeth and the fulcrum l4 isa T-headed screw20 which'is locked to the arm l6 by a lock nut 22. The screw 20 extends downwardly through a slot 24 (Fig. extending longitudinally of the raised central portion of a plate 26 secured to a discoidal fulcrum plate 28. The diameter of the screw is somewhat greater than the width of the slot 24 and opposite side portions of the screw are slabbed off as shown at in Fig. 1 to enable the screw to extend through said slot and also to prevent the plate 25 from turning on the screw 20. As shown in Fig. 2, the central portion of the plate 26 is elevated over the crosshead of the screw 20, said crosshead being confined between the plate 26 and the fulcrum plate 28.
In the operation of the illustrated pincers the fulcrum plate 28 is located on an insole on a last bottom, for example, the insole 32 on the last 34 illustrated fragmentally in Fig. 2. The fulcrum plate is so located with relation to the edge of the insole as to permit longitudinal bodily movement of the pincer jaws relatively to the fulcrum plate sufficient to bring the upper in against the last. The pincer jaws are shown in gripping engagement with the lasting margin of a shoe upper 38.
During the operation of the pincer, the last and upper may be supported on a bench spindle or in any other suitable manner. In the operation of the pincer, the pincer first swings on the crosshead 40 of the screw 20 to pull the upper heightwise from its position illustrated in Fig. 2 to its position in Fig. 3 and while the upper is held under heightwise tension, the pincer is moved bodily from the position in Fig. 3 to its position in Fig. 4 to bring the upper in against the last. During this latter movement of the pincer, the crosshead 40 of the screw 20 slides over the top of prising crossed levers, the longer ends of which serve as handles and the shorter ends of which are formed as gripper jaws, a fulcrum element and a member on which said element;may either. fulcrum to permit rocking movement of the pincer or move bodily to permit rectilinear longitudinal movement of the pincer.

In a hand lasting pincer of the type comprising crossed levers, the longer ends of which serve las handles and the shorter ends of which are formed as gripper jaws, a fulcrum element comprising a headed member carried by :the shorter end of one of said crossed levers and a work-engaging -member on which said headed member fulcrums, said work-engaging member being provided with a slot which permits rectilinear movement of said headedmember relativelyto the work-engaging member in the direction-of the length of thepincer.
4. In :a hand lasting pincer ofthe ytype comprising crossed levers, the longer ends of which serve as handles and the shorter ends of which are formed as gripper jaws, a T-shaped fulcrum pin, a work-engaging plate on which said pin fulcrums, and means connecting the pin to the plate and permitting the pin to fulcrum on the plate and to slide on the plate in the direction of the length of the pincer.

In a hand lasting pincer of the type comprising crossed levers, the longer ends of which serve as handles and the shorter ends of which are formed as gripper jaws, a headed fulcrum pin secured to the shorter end of one of said crossed levers, 1a work-engaging plate on which said fulcrum pin operates, and a member secured to said plate and elevated over its central portion, the head of said fulcrum pin being confined between the elevated portion of said member and the top of said plate, said member being slotted to permit relative movement of the pincer and the plate-in the direction .of the :length .of the pincer.
