This invention is for improvements in or relating to shackles of the type having holes or eyes in the ends of the shackle jaws, through which a closure pin'or the like is passed, at least one end of the closure pin being screw threaded to screw into a correspondingly threaded eye in the shackle so that the shackle is closed when this pin is screwed home. It has already been proposed to provide an abutment on or adjacent the screw threaded end of the pin and said jaw having a recess to receive the abutment when.
the shackle is opened, the base or end of said threaded end of the pin is free to slide in the i recess serving as a stop for the abutment to prevent the entire removal of the pin. The depth of the recess is such that the threaded end of the pin can be retracted entirely or almost entirely into the recessed jaw of the shackle so as to leave the space between the jaws clear for the insertion of the means to which the shackle is to be connected.
For some purposes, as for example when it is necessary to re-anneal the shackle'and its pin it is desirable to be able to remove the pin entirely. The invention will be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, whereon Figure 1 is a part sectional elevation of one embodiment of a shackle according to the invention with the closure pin in the closed position,

Figure 5 shows an embodiment of the invention in which only one end of the pin is screwthreaded.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in 13. The end of the pin has a turning head 19 for screwing the pin home in the closed position.
In order normally to prevent complete dislodgment of the pin M from the shackle an abutment 20 is provided on the pin adjacent .the threaded portion of the end I1 and when the pin is in the closed position a part of this abutment lies in a counter-sunk recess or chamfered portion 2| in the inside face of the jaw Hi. This prevents damage to the abutment. The jaw H having the eye I3 is slotted or recessed at 22 on its interior face to receive the abutment 20 when the shackle is retracted from the closing position but the slot 22 is not carried through to the outer face of the jaw so that a stop 23 is formed by the base of the slot, against which the abutment 20 rests as the pin is withdrawn with the abutment in alignment with the recess after the threaded end I! has been unscrewed from the jaw If] so that the shackle pin cannot normally be disengaged entirely from the shackle. The depth of the recess 22 is such that theforward end I! of the pin is accommodated sufficiently within the jaw II to leave the space between the jaws clear for the insertion of the part to which the shackle has to be connected.
For some purposes, however, it is desirable that it should be possible to remove the pin entirely from the jaws as for example when it is necessary to repair the shackle or re-anneal or replace the pin. For this purpose the abutment 20 is shaped so that it will mesh with the thread I6 in the jaw ll. After retracting the pin until the abutment 20 engages the base 23 of the recess 22 it is possible by turning the pin to screw it entirely out of the shackle, the threads on the jaw ll adjacent the outer face thereof co-operating with the abutment 20 for this purpose. It will be seen that in eifect the thread 16 in the neighborhood of the stop 23 forms a passageway leading from the recess 22 to the outer face of the jaw ll, along which the abutment 20 can be withdrawn clear of the stop.
In the modification shown in Figure 4 the abutment is in the form of a spring 24 but is still shaped so that it will co-operate with the threads in the jaw II to permit the pin to be removed entirely.
