our invention relates to clip` holding. devices, and more particularly to a device adapted to hold :al clip in predetermined position while it is being secured in a wallboard assembly and to secure such clip in fixed position in the assembly. The
term "wallboard assembly is used herein by way of `denition and not of limitation, it being intended to include within its scope, wallboard, plasterboard, corkboard, or berboard in the form of tiles, blocks or slabs used for insulating or acoustical purposes in building structures.
Heretofore, wallboard assemblies have been generally erected by driving nails or similar fastening means through the boards and studdng forming a supporting structure. Such procedure possesses many disadvantages, among which are the lowl rate of assembly, the careful handling of the wallboards required even from skilled labor, the necessity of replacing boards tearing away from the fastening means, and the additional expense involved in such measures. In order to eliminate such disadvantages, it has been proposed to erect wallboard assemblies by the use of wallboard clips such, for example, as shown-in Stubbs Patent, No. 2,008,192, granted July 16, 1935; Tummins Patent No. 2,174,145, granted September 26, 1939,' and Tummins patent application, Serial No. 279,381, led June 16,1939. Thev use of wallboard clips eliminates face nailing, obviates the necessity of replacing wallboards which have torn away from fastening means, and has speeded up the rate of assembly to some extent. It has not speeded up the rate of assembly tor any great extent due to the difliculties involved in the use of such clips; that is, when a .clip is used it is necessary to hold it securely in place by hand, to hold the wallboard in place, to hold clip fastening means, such as nails or brads,
in position, and to drive such fastening means timerequired in assembling wallboard structures,
.eliminates a large portion of the labor cost involved in such structures, and permits a more attractive installation to be obtained at less cost than heretofore deemed possible.

Referring to the drawing, there is show-n a hollow tubular body 2 provided at one end with a `nail receiving recess or socket 3. Preferably, the
exterior ofY the hollow tubular body 2 is knurled `to'assist the user in readily holding the device.
The opposite end of the tubular body 2 is provided interiorly with a thread 4, for a purpose `hereinafter explained. Immediately above the nail. receiving recess or socket 3, the wall of the body 2 projects inwardly to form a seat 5 for a `spring 6. A punch 1 is tted within the body 2, the punch 1 consisting of a solid rod, the end 8 thereof forming the base ofv the nail receiving recess or socket 3. The punch 1 is adapted to move axially to eject a nail or brad from the recess 3. A collar 9'is welded to the punch 1.
The helical spring 6 rests onV the seat or projecting portion 5 ofthe body 2 in spaced relationship to the punch 1 and is held between the collar 9 and ythe seat 5. The spring 6 is adapted to retract. the punch 1 to its original position after axial movement thereof to eject a nail from the `recess,3. A locking element isprovided to securely hold the punch 1 within the body v2, such element consisting of a knurled finger portion l!) having a depending spindle ll provided with an vexterior thread I2, the thread' I-2 of the spindle Ilr being adapted to engage the thread 4 of the body'2 -to lock the punch 1 within the body 2 and to prevent its removal therefrom. Upon attempted removal of the punch 1 from the body 2, the collar 9 engages the spindle H thus preventing its removal,
A clip retaining element is provided to securely hold a clip in predetermined position while it is being secured in a wallboard assembly. 'I 'he clip retaining element comprises a magnetized block I3, adapted to fri; securely on the body 2 surrounding the nail receiving recess or socket 3. A set screw I4 is used to hold the block I3 to the body 2. At least the face I5 of the block I3 is magnetized to magnetically attract a kmetal clip, the face I 5 forming a seat for such clip. The face I5 is formed in two sections so as to increase its magnetic force. The groove I6 separating the face I5 in two sections extends across the face and to a substantial depth within the block. The groove I 5 provides openings II in opposite side surfaces of the block I3 adapted to receive the projection of a clip; the junctures between the walls of the groove I6 and the opposite side surfaces of the block I3 are beveled or tapered as shown at I8 so as to provide a V-shaped formation of the ends of the groove, thus assisting in guiding the projection or point of a clip within the groove. Preferably, the face. I5 of the block I3 is beveled at a slight angle to aid in the assembling operation since the normal position of the device in use is at a slight angle.
In using the device, a nail is placed within the socket 3, and a clip I9 seated on the face I5 of the block I3, the point of the'nail passing through an opening in the clip, as shown in Figure 2, and the projection 20 of the clip penetrating the opening II in the side surface of the block I3. The device is placed adjacent an assembly and holds the clip in predetermined position therein, the end 2| of the clip I9 fitting within a groove in the edge-of the wallboard. A hammer is used to strike theend of the punch 'I to eject a nail placed in the socket 3' and to force the nail in the supporting studding thereby securely holding the clip in fixed'` position in the assembly and holding the wallboard to the 'supporting studding. The device is thenremoved and a second wallboard placed in the assembly, the point 20 of the clip I9 being forced therein,
and the device used in the manner above de-v scribed to fasten the board on its opposite edge. As many clips may be used to secure the wallboard in position as desired.
The advantages involved in the use of our device are obvious. sents a more attractive appearance. The assembling operation is speeded considerably and the labor cost involved in `such operation is decreased. The device may be manufactured economically and can be readily used by unskilled labor.
While we have described and illustrated a preferred embodiment of our invention, it will be understood our invention is not so limited since it may be otherwise embodied within the scope of the following claims.
We claim: Y
1. A device adapted to hold a clip in predetermined position while it is being secured in a wallboard assembly and to secure such clip in fixed position in the assembly, comprising a hollow body, a portion of said body being adapted to receive a nail, brad or similar fastening means, magnetized clip supporting meansplacedadjacent the nail receiving portion of said body, a punch adapted to move axially of said body to The finished structure prej mined position while it is being secured in a wallboard assembly and to secure such clip in fixed position in the assembly, comprising a body portion having a nail receiving recess, a magnetized block surrounding the nail receiving portion of said body adapted to hold a clip in predetermined position, and means adapted to force a nail placed in the recess through a held clip and into the assembly thereby securing the clip in fixed position therein.
3. A. device adapted to hold a clip in predetermined position while it is being secured in a wallboard assembly and to secure such clip in fixed position in the assembly, comprising a tubbular. body, a portionA of said body being adapted Vto receive a nail, brad, or similar fastening means,
a magnetized block surrounding the nail receiving portion of said body, said block being adapted to hold a clip in predetermined position for erection in the assembly, a punch adapted to move axially of said body to force a nail through a held clip and into the assembly thereby securing the clip in fixed position in the assembly, and means to retract said punch to its original position.
4. A device adapted to hold a clip in predetermined position while it is being secured in a wallboardassembly and to secure such clip in fixed position in the assembly, comprising a hollow tubular body, one end of said body forming a nail receiving socket, a punch tted in said body and adapted for movement axially thereof, an end of said punch'forming the base of the nail receiving socket, means adapted to prevent removal of said punch from said body, a magnetized block surrounding said nail receiving 4socket adapted tohold 'a clip in predetermined .position for Verection in theV assembly, and a 4spring fitted in said body in predetermined spaced relationship tosaid punch, said spring being adapted to retract said punch to its original position after axial movement thereof. A clip supporting element for use in a de- `vice adapted vto hold a clip in predetermined position While it is being secured in a Wallboard assembly and to secure such clip in fixed position in the assembly, comprising a magnetized block, the face surface of said block forming a seat for a clip and having a groove therein extending to a substantial depth Within said block, the juncture between the Walls of the groove and opposite side` surfaces of the block being beveled,
and means for securing said block to said devicl 6.
