SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,660, dated March 16, 1880.

Application filed November 24, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BAENA T. STOWELL, of Perrysburg, county of Wood, and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Gorn- Planters, of Which the following is a specification.

The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.

This invention relates to that class of seeding-machines whereby the dropping or planting of the seed is performed by the revolution of the Wheels that carry the machine; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement ofthe various parts thereof, more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a cross-section of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a detail viewof hopper with part of casing removed. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the hoppers.

A A denote the wheels of the machine, of ordinary construction, attached to an axle, B,

f upon which is mounted the body or frame- -rather the hubs of the wheels A A', are made four slots, g g' g g', two of which form openings or recesses into the hoppers F F', and two into the tubes H H', secured to the wheels A A' above mentioned. These hubs are also provided with spring valves or cups g* git, the object of which is to receive the grain at regular intervals from the hoppers, said valves or cups being operated through the medium of cams on the inside of the hoppers, during which operation the cups are made to deposit, when full of grain, the same down through the tubes H and H' into the chutes or passageways I I, where it falls into the furrow and is planted, said valves being thrown out and operated by cams on the inside of hoppers.

Also secured to the foregoing described wheels A A', and directly under and in line of the tubes H H', are two chutes or passage- Ways, I I, to the Lipper parts of which are pivoted valves J J, the longest portions or arms of said valves having their ends bent at right angles to each other, for the purpose of engag-,

ing with T-shaped cams fixed in the standards C C'.

Operation: It will be observed that when the machine is drawn forward and put in motion by the revolution of the wheels the tubes thereon will come directly under and in line of the openings in the hoppers or hubs of said wheels at each revolution thereof, and at the same time the spring valves or cups are thrown outward from the hoppers and open over the tubes through the medium of cams on the inside of the hoppers and the grain is discharged down through the tubes, and the discharge regulated down the chute into the furrows by means of the valves pivoted to said chutes engaging with the T-shaped cams fixed to the standards or frame-work of the machine, the valves being opened when they come in contact with the cams and closed after they have passed the cams, thus eftectually accomplishing the planting of the seed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
