UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK REILLY, OF SOUTH CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR MAKING TUBES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,642, dated March 16, 1880,
Application filed August 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PATRICK REILLY, of South Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tube, Flue, or Pipe Machinery, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of the machinery embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in the employment, in connection with a transferring mechanism, of a second housing and set of welding or finishing rolls, with rod and stand attachments similar to the housing-rolls and auxiliary mechanism used for welding tubes, whereby the tube, flue, or pipe may be finished by continuous operations without the necessity of returning it to the furnace to be reheated, thus economizing time, labor, and expense.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a set of rolls properly mounted on housings and located relatively to the furnace c,- and A represents the stand, ball, and rod-gear, all of which are used for welding tubes, fines, or pipe.
B represents another set of rolls, and B the stand, ball, and rod-gear which are employed for finishing the welded tubes, fines, or pipe.
Intermediate of the two sets of rolls is an inclined table or guide, C, and a carrier, D, which latter, in its normal position, extends longitudinally in direct line with the stand, &c., B, and is of semi-cylindrical form. This carrier D is arranged in a hollow post, if desired, and rests upon a foot-levelyD, by which it is raised so as to clear the post and permit of its being swung or rotated by hand or otherwise into such position as to readily receive the tube from the table C.
The operation is as follows: The tube is passed from the furnace through the rolls A,
- so as to be welded as usual, after which it is immediately placed on the table C and guided into the carrier D, which is then rotated or otherwise shifted in order to direct the tube to the rolls B, through which it is passed, emerg. ing therefrom in a finished state.
It will be seen that by this provision I am enabled to save the first heat of the tube, and with said heat to reduce the tube and additionally weld it, so that it is finished, the return of the tube to the furnace to be reheated being obviated.
When the tube first leaves the rolls A the advance end thereof, striking the carryingrolls or the carrying-trough, is often butted or misshaped, so that it is not in condition to enter the rolls B; hence it is desirable to introduce the rear end of the tube to said rolls B, for which purpose the carrier D is made rotatable in order to swing around the tube.
The two sets of rolls work in unison, for which purpose they may be geared together.
A third set of rolls, &c., is shown, serving to illustrate how multi-roll machinery may be compacted. In practice, however, two sets of rolls are ordinarily amply sufficient, and a third set would be simply a duplication, occasion for the use of which would seldom arise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a tube-making machine, the combination, with two sets of rolls with rod and stand mechanism arranged out of line, of a table and a rotating or swinging carrier, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with two sets of rolls and their rod and stand mechanisms, arranged out of line one with the other, a rotating or swinging carrier, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
PATRICK REILLY.
