The invention relates generally to mattresses, and more particularly to mattresses utilizing pre-built pads or the like.

One object of theinvention isthe provision of an improved mattress comprising main body portionsand a border boxing, wherein both the body portions. and the boxing are adapted to be separately constructed as complete units, the body portions comprising top and bottom covers and filling material, and novel means for securing said body portions or cover pads to a resilient spring construction.

Another object of the invention is the production of a mattress which requires comparatively little hand work in the assembling thereof, and in which such hand work is done mainly inside the body of the mattress and is not visible on the outside thereof.

Another object of the invention is the novel method of constructing and assembling a mattress having the above features.

Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.

To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts and method of assembling herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a mattress embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and

Fig. 3 illustrates a slight modification of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Referring now to the drawing and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, l represents generally a resilient inner spring construction comprising a plurality of vertical coils connected together by means of the usual helicals to form a unitary construction. Positioned on the top and bottom of the spring construction are cover pads consisting of cover sheets 2, padding 3 and inner sheets 4 which are positioned adjacent the spring construction, and if desired a layer of sisal 5 may be positioned between the padding 3 and the inner sheets 4. These sheets, padding and sisal are secured together at spaced intervals by stitching 6 which thus forms these elements into unitary cover pads, and this operation is performed before assembly, the pre-building of these pads simplifying a great deal the assembly of the mattress. However, any number of lines of stitching may be provided. The oppositely positioned strips on the top and bottom padsare connected by suitable ties 8 as will hereinafter be described. Extending around the edge of the cover sheets but spaced therefrom is a flap 9 which is secured to the cover sheet by means of the stitches I0, and inserted in this flap is a rod II which is secured to the spring construction by suitable means such as the hog rings l2 which pass through the flap B.

Surrounding the edge of the spring construction is a suitable border boxing I3 which, as shown, comprises an outer sheet l4, padding 15, which is enclosed by the inner sheet Hi, the latter being folded back on itself around the padding, these elements being secured together by rivets or eyelets IT. The edge of the outer boxing ply I4 is then secured to the edge of the cover sheets 2 by means of the stitches I8, a suitable tape 19 being folded over the edges of the cover sheet and outer boxing ply and secured thereto by the stitches I 8 to provide a neat and finished edge.

The method of assembling the mattress is as follows: The respective cover pads are first prebuilt and provided with a suitable strip I which is secured to the pad by the same stitches 6 that secure the other elements to one another. These pads are then placed on the top and bottom of the spring construction, after which the strips 1 are connected and drawn toward the spring construction by suitable tie members or cords II] and, as shown in Fig. 2, is preferably one continuous cord extending from one strip to the other and back again, etc, across the strips or may be a plurality of individual ties. The flaps 8 are then secured to the spring construction, after which the border boxing is placed in position and the padding secured to the spring construction by means of the cords 2| which alternately engage the helical and the padding. The outer edge of the boxing padding ply is then folded in adjacent the flap 8, as shown, after which the edges of the cover sheet and the outer boxing ply are stitched together on a stitching machine, which also secures the tape [9 at the same time.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3, a strip 21 is substituted for the strip 1. The strip 21 instead of being stitched to the cover pad along its longitudinal axis, as is the strip 1, is folded back upon itself, after which the free edges are secured to the cover pad by means of the stitching 6, thus forming a pocket into which a suitable rod 29 may be inserted. In the assembly of this form, a series of single ties 28 are used, these ties passing through the strip 21 above the rod 29, so that the latter will tend to distribute the tension along the flap 21.

It will be seen from the above that I have provided a novel mattress construction and method of assembling the same in which the same may be easily and readily constructed with a maximum amount of machine work and a minimum amount of hand labor, thus producing a mattress which presents a very neat and workmanlike appearance at a comparatively low cost, as well as without increasing factory facilities.

1. In a mattress of the kind described, a spring construction, unitary top and bottom cover pads comprising an inner sheet, an outer cover sheet and padding interposed therebetween, a strip of material, folded back upon itself, extending across the inner face of each pad, a rod positioned in the loop formed by each strip, and means passing around the respective rods and connecting said strips for drawing the same towards the spring construction.

2. In a mattress of the kind described, an inner spring construction, layers of filling material covering the top and bottom of the spring construction, top and bottom fabric sheets forming covers for the filling material, a plurality of strips of material extending across the inner faces of the layers of filling material, lines of stitches extending through said layers of filling material and respectively connecting said cover sheets with said strips to divide said cover sheets and adjacent filling material into a plurality of connected cushions, a plurality of ties forming taut connections between opposite top and bottom strips, an edge boxing extending around the spring construction, and means connecting the adjacent marginal edges of the cover sheets and the boxing.
