DENTAL APPLIANCE n Filed March l, 1941 Patented Aug. 5, 1941 UNI-TED STATES PA'ENT OFFHCE DENTAL APPLIANCE Herbert Mandus, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application March l, 1941, Serial No. 381,233
6 Claims.
This invention relates to dental appliances and particularly to one for facilitating correct relative adjustment of the two waX impressions or so-called wax bites, used by dentists in the process of making up the upper and lower sets of artificial teeth.
The correct biting position by the patient of the wax impressions is often very diiiicult to obtain and various methods of procedure are resorted to by the dentist to accomplish the desired result. One of the methods frequently used is to order the patient to close his mouth and at the same time to swallow. But with the two wax impressions in his mouth the patient finds it diflicult to swallow the saliva. As a result of the patients failure to properly position the bites the mechanical work is often spoiled, the process has to be repeated and the work has to be done over again.
The object of this invention is to provide a device which can be removably applied to either one of the two wax bites while positioned in the mouth of the patient and whereby water can be injected into his mouth which the patient will be forced to swallow and in doing so automatically close his mouth bringing the two wax impressions into the correct biting position.
One embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification and in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts,
Fig. 1 is an elevation of my new device and Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section on line 2--2 of Figure 1 seen in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawing more in detail A denotes one of the waX bites or impressions. My device comprises a yoke shaped frame l0 made of a resilient piece of metal or other suitable material which is adapted to t around the outer circumferential face of either one of the two bites A and to frictionally engage the same. Suitably xed to the outer face of said frame I0 as at Ita is a Y shaped metal tube I I whose central branch IIa projects forwardly and has attached to it a hose I2 leading from a rubber bulb I3 serving as water container. The side branches IIb, IIc are curved around the frame and have attached to them short rubber hoses I4 which terminate beyond the end edges of the frame. Ears I5 or the like provided on the frame serve to hold the hoses in a horizontal position. The forwardly projecting branch I Ia is Z shaped so that in position of use the tube IIa will not interfere with the closing of the mouth.
In use, after the wax bites are placed in the mouth of the patient and the bulb I3 is filled with water, the dentist snaps the frame I@ around one of the bites A, preferably the upper one as shown in Fig. l. He then on squeezing the bulb injects water into the mouth of the patient. The patient in attempting to swallow the water will automatically close his mouth bringing the two bites in correct relative position over one another. Thereupon the device is detached from the bite and the two bites which adhere to one another in the position placed by the patient are removed and are ready for the mechanical work.
The resiliency of the frame I9 permits the device to be used for different sizes and shapes of bites.
Since various changes may be made in the construction of my device without departing from the principle of my invention, I do not wish to restrict myself to the details described and shown.
What I claim is:
1. A dental appliance of the character described, comprising a frame capable of being detachably secured to a wax bite deposited on and engaging the gums of a patient, and means for injecting liquid into the mouth of the patient capable of being detachably secured to said frame and including a compressible liquid container and a tube extending around said wax bite said frame and connected to said container.
2. A dental appliance of the character described comprising a frame capable of being detachably secured to a waX bite while in the mouth of a patient and liquid injecting means including a Y shaped tube, the central branch of which projects forwardly, a liquid rubber bulb having a hose connection to said central branch, and hoses connected to the side branches of said Y shaped tube and adapted to terminate beyond the end edges of said frame.
3. A dental appliance according to claim 2 in which the central branch of said Y shaped tube is Z shaped, for the purpose specified.
4, A dental appliance of the character described, comprising an arcuate frame conforming with the configuration of the outer wall of a wax bite and adapted to be detachably secured to said outer wall and liquid injecting means secured to said frame and including a tube for feeding the liquid around said wax bite into the mouth of the patient.
5. A dental appliance of the character described comprising a resilient arcuate frame capable of frictionally engaging the outer wall of a wax bite and liquid injecting means secured to a wax bite and liquid injecting means secured to said frame and including an arcuate open ended liquid feeding tube having a .forwardly projecting nozzle and a compressible liquid container 5 connected to said nozzle.
