MACHINE FOR PRESSING AND CUTTING PLUG-TOBACCO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,174, dated March 2, 1880. Application filed August 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS W. SPENCER, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Pressing and Cutting Plug-Tobacco; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my machine, the side wall being broken away to show the interior construction of parts. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper side of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of said machine. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a cross-section upon line as w of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the cutter-cylinder and lubricating attachment.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention is an improvement upon a class of machines intended for use in compressing and cutting plug-tobacco; and it consists in the means employedfor lubricating and cleaning the compression-cylinders, substantially as hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A and A represent the side pieces of the frame, arranged vertically and in parallel lines upon a suitable base, B. Near the longitudinal center of the frame is journaled a driving-shaft, 0, upon which, be tween the sides A, is secured .a cylinder, 1)., provided within its periphery with an annular groove, d. A second shaft, E, is journaled above the shaft 0, and has secured at its longitudinal center a cylindrical disk, F, which has a width of face that corresponds to the width of the groove d, and when in position is contained within the sides of said groove.
A shaft, G, journaled near the forward end of the frame and provided with a belt-pulley,
g, and a similar shaft, H, provided with a pulley, h, and journaled immediately in rear of the cylinder D, furnish bearings for a belt, I, which passes within the groove 11, beneath said cylinder, upward and around said pulleys and horizontally across the upper side of said cylinder, the vertical arrangement of said pulleys being such as to cause said belt to pass horizontally through and rest lightly within the lower side of said groove cl.
J ournaled within suitable bearings secured upon the inner sides of the frame-sides A and in front of the cylinder D are four vertical shafts, K, each of which is provided upon its upper end with a pulley, k. Said shafts are arranged in pairs, one of which is placed immediately in front of the cylinders D and F, while the second pair is placed just in rear of the shaft G. Relatively the pulleys 7c of each pair or set of shafts are arranged so as to leave between their peripheries a space substantially equal to the width of face of the cylinder F, and around the corresponding pulleys, upon each side, is placed a belt, L, that connects them together, and causes the rotation of one to correspondingly rotate the other pulley.
Motion is communicated to the pulley-shafts K by means of two belts, M, one of which passes around a grooved pulley, N, attached to the driving-shaft 0 upon each side of the cylinder D, and from thence passes forward and around a pulley, is, attached to the lower end of the corresponding forward shaft K.
The pulleys k are adjusted vertically, so as to bring the lower edges of their belts L just above the surface of the belt I, and as said belts are caused to move rearward along their contiguous portions it will be seen that properly-prepared tobacco-leaves placed upon and between the same will be caused to pass between the male and female cylindersD and F,
the pulleys 7c compressing said tobacco laterally to the like dimensions of the groove all, while the space between the bottom of the latter and the periphery of the cylinder F will determine the vertical dimensions that will be given to said tobacco during its passage between said cylinders. The upper cylinder, F, is caused to rotate with the cylinder D by means of a grooved pulley, f, secured upon its shaft, and connected by means of a belt, 0, with a similar grooved pulley, P, attached to the drivingshaftG.
Upon leaving the belt I the bar of compressed tobacco passes rearwardbetween a cutting-cylinder, Q, and bearing-roller R, where it is dividedinto plugs having the usual lengths.
Said cutting-cylinder is caused to rotate by meansof a grooved pulley, S, attached to its shaft q, and connected by means of a belt, T, with a similar pulley, U, attached to or upon the driving-shaft O.
Lubricants are supplied to the surface of the belt I, to the peripheries of the pressingcylinders D and F, and to the cutters of the cylinder Q by means of the following-described appliances:
For the belt 1 a reservoir, V, is secured to or upon the frame in front of and below the pulley g, and within said reservoir is journaled a roller, 12, which bears against the lower side of said belt, and is rotated by the motion of the same. A lubricant being placed within said reservoir, the motion of said pulley causes it to be carried up to and against said belt, to which a sufficient quantity adheres to meet all requirements.
The upper cylinder, F, is lubricated by means of a roller, w, pivoted upon and revolving within a reservoir, W, both of said parts being similar to those before described. In order to insure contact between the peripheries of said cylinder and roller, the latter and its reservoir are loosely attached to the frame and either drawn toward said cylinder by means of a spring or are so arranged upon said frame as to cause their weight to incline them toward and against said cylinder.
Directlybeneath the-lower grooved cylinder, D, is placed a lubricating-reservoir, X, within which are pivoted two separate and independent disks, 00, which have such vertical adjustment as to cause their peripheries to nearly touch the bottom of the groove d. A spiral spring, m,-placed around the shaft upon which said disks are pivoted and bearing against their inner faces, presses them apart, so as to cause their outer faces to bear against the sides of the groove d and convey to the same the lubricant contained in the reservoir as they are rotated by the motion of the cylinder.
lhe cutters of the cylinder Q are supplied with a lubricant by means of a circular brush, y, journaled within a reservoir, Y, that is placed directly beneath said cylinder, the size and relative vertical position of said brush-roller being such as to cause it to be partially rotated by each cutter, which latter, as they strike against said bristles, take up a portion of the lubricant adhering thereto.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new In combination with the grooved pressingcylinder D, the pivoted disks as and w, pressed apart by means of the spring as bearing against the sides of the groove d, and partially immersed within a suitable lubricant, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
