Description

July 29, 1941. A. BARUCH HOLQER FOR ROTARY BALLS 0R BOBBINS Filed Oct. 5, 1940 I INVENTOR: A [,afioas Eel rack ATTORNEY Patented July 29, 194i rise PATENT 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improved revolving holders for balls or bobbins of strand material such as wound cotton, wool, silk or yarn. My improved ball holder can particularly be used to enable a suspended ball or bobbin to be readily unwound during the operation of crocheting and knitting.
In prior wool holding devices of the type referred to complex swivels are utilized as a separate revolving means. However, such swivel means increases the weight of the holder and also lengthens the same. Besides, the loose spinning of the yarn causes it to get easily caught in the swivel parts hampering the knitting work and annoying the knitter. The excess weight of the swivel sooner tires the wrist on which such devices are usually suspended, while the excess length of the suspended section of the tool causes it to become easily entangled in the knitters clothes.
In accordance with my invention I employ a beaded chain suspension which may also serve as a bracelet to be pulled over the wrist of the knitter. It is however, also feasible to use any appropriate bracelet that is connected with the bobbin carrying stem by beaded chain links. At the same time the beaded chain forms the swivel means and reduces the friction caused by the rotary movement of the ball to a minimum. Applying a plurality of bead links which form for instance part of a beaded chain acts as a safeguard against the hitches. Thus, any hard pull or strain on the yarn is avoided which allows of uniform and loose knitting work being done. Due to the fact that the beaded chain simultaneously serves as the suspending and swivel means my novel ball holder cannot only be made shorter than heretofore but comprises a minimum of mechanism. Owing to the ballshape of the stem suspending elements and the avoidance of the edges and connecting joint of prior devices, the wool or yarn is not liable to be caught whereby the picking up of the yarn and interference with the work are prevented.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a ball holder of the type referred to which comprises a beaded chain device used as a rotatable suspension of the ball or bobbin.
Another object of the invention is to reduce the friction and safeguard against interruption of the revolving movement of the suspended ball and to facilitate the knitting operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a short and light weight suspension ball holder of the character described which is cheap in the manufacture.
Still an object of the inventionis to provide a beaded chain link ball holder preventing the wool or yarn payed off the ball to be caught.
These and further objects of the invention will become more evident when the description proceeds taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of my improved device, the wool ball being indicated in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the connection of the beaded chain with the ball supporting stem.
My improved holder comprises a beaded chain ill one end of which is provided with a ring H, the diameter of which is smaller than the one of the balls or beads of which chain In is composed. Instead of a beaded chain having ball-shaped beads a chain with ellipsoidal beads may be used. By means of ring H the end of beaded chain [0 is secured to an intermediate portion of the chain.
The last ball l2 of beaded chain I0 is secured to the ball carrying stem l3. Instead of one ball l2 several balls may be secured to stem l3. Stem I3 may consist of a synthetic resin or the like moldable material and has a tapered end M to facilitate piercing of the wool ball. Preferably, stem I3 is slightly tapered towards its upper end 15. As shown in Fig. 2 an opening I6 is provided in the upper end it's of stem I3. Ball [2 is fastened in opening 46 or embedded in the stem by means of a suitable cement or the like fastening means.
The wool ball or bobbin is indicated at I! and is held on stem I3 since the upper end l5 has a smaller diameter than the lower end of stem I3. It will now be evident that when beaded chain I0 is pulled over the wrist stem l3 will be suspended from the wrist. Rotation of stem l3 by paying off the yarn causes rotation of the beads arranged above ball i2. Thus, friction is reduced to a minimum.
Various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction of the invention without departing from the broader spirit and scope thereof, as set forth in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A holder for yarn balls comprising a bracelet, a ball piercing bodkin, mean to rotatably suspend said bodkin from said bracelet, the latter being composed of a bead chain, an end bead being being housed in the upper end of said bodkin and forming a direct rotatable connection between the latter and the said bracelet and means to secure one end of said bead chain to an intermediate portion thereof.
