This invention relates to illuminated testing devices, and its general object is to provide a device that is primarily designed for testing spacer protectors of permanent wave machines, by the use of light, for the purpose of ascertaining if the protectors are properly insulated and safe to use, and such can be accomplished in an easy and expeditious manner, merely by placing a protector upon my device in the path of the rays of light emitted therefrom, and when so placed, any and all defects in the protector can be instantly detected, due to the passage of light therethrough.
A further object is to provide an illuminated testing device that preferably includes means to guide and facilitate holding the protector in the path of the light rays.
Another object is to provide an illuminated testing device, that is simple in construction,
inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely efficient in use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device which forms the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the casing cover or lid.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the abutment means to limit the sliding movement of the cover to closed position.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral I indicates a casing or housing body which in the form shown is of elongated rectangular shape to provide bottom, side and end walls, while the top is open, but is closed by a cover or lid 2.
The side walls at the top thereof are inturned to provide horizontal flanges 3 disposed longitudinally of and throughout the length of the body, and. fixed to one end wall is a socket memher 4 having threaded or otherwise mounted therein a light bulb 5 of the elongated type and which is controlled by a switch 6 preferably of the toggle type, the switch being mounted on one side wall to extend therethrough, as best shown in Figure 3. A conductor cord 1 is connected to the socket member 4 and is of course for the purpose of electrically connecting the socket member in circuit with a suitable source of current.
The cover or lid 2 is of a length to extend a considerable distance beyond one end of the body, to provide a supporting portion 8 to facilitate the use of the device, as will be apparent, and while the cover may be secured in closed position, to the horizontal flanges 3 by screws or the like extending through the cover andthreaded in the flanges, I preferably slidably associate the cover with the body, and for that purpose, the cover has strip members 9 secured to the underside thereof by screws Hi, the strip members being disposed in parallel relation with each other and having their outer longitudinal edge portions bent in spaced relation to the underside of the cover to provide guide tongues H for slidably receiving the flanges between the tongues and the cover, as best shown in Figure 3. The upper corners of the body at one end and the adjacent ends of the flanges 3 are recessed as at [2 to provide an abutment seat for a stop flange l3 formed on one end of the cover, as best shown in Figure 5, to limit the sliding movement of the cover to its closed position, as will be apparent upon inspection of Figure 2.
The cover is provided with a slot l4 extending longitudinally thereof for disposal directly over the light bulb to provide a Window opening for the passage of light rays therethrough. The slot is closed by a strip l5 of transparent material, such as glass or the like, and which is held on the underside of the cover 2 by tongues I6 formed on and extending along the inner longitudinal edge portions of the strip members 9.
In order to guide and facilitate holding the protector on the cover for disposal over the slot I4, I provide an elongated substantially U-shaped member I! fixed to the upper surface of the cover by having the screws l0 threaded in the arms l8 thereof, as best shown in Figure 3. An additional screw may be provided for the bight portion of the U-shaped member, but in any event the arms l8 are disposed an equal distance upon opposite sides of the slot, with the bight portion adjacent one end of the slot, and the space between the arms opening onto the supporting portion 8, as

What I claim is: V 1. An illuminated testing device for a spacer protector of a permanent wave machine, comprising a casing having an open top, a removable cover closing the top and having a longitudinally extending slot therein, illuminating means within the. casing and arranged for the passage of light-rays through the slot, transparent means closing the slot, said cover being of a length to extend beyond one end of the casing to provide supporting means for the protector, an elongated substantially U-shaped member secured to the cover'for arrangement of the arms thereof upon opposite sides of the slot and beyond one end of the latter for disposal on the supporting means, and said member being adapted to guide and facilitate holding the protector in the path of the light rays through the slot.
2. An illuminated testing device for a spacer protector of a permanent wave machine, comprising an elongated rectangular casing including side walls and an open top, inwardly directed flanges formed on the upper longitudinal edges of the side walls'throughout the length thereof, a cover for closing the top and having a longitudinally extending slot therein, illuminating means within the casing and arranged for the passage of light rays through the slot, guide means secured to the underside of the cover and mounted on the flanges for slidable movement of the cover to open and closed positions, transparent means closing the slot, means formed on the guide means for holding the transparent means in place, and means secured to the cover for arrangement upon opposite sides of the slot throughout its length and beyond the ends thereof to guide and facilitate holding a protector in the path of light rays through the slot.
3. An illuminated testing device for a spacer protector of a permanent wave machine, comprising an elongated rectangular casing includ ing side Walls and an open top, inwardly directed flanges formed on the upper longitudinal edges of the side walls throughout the length thereof, a cover for closing the top and having a longitudinally extending slot therein, a light bulb within the casing and arranged for the passage of light rays therefrom through the slot, strips secured to the underside of the cover in parallelism with each other and disposed upon opposite sides of the slot, tongues formed on the outer edges of the strips and spaced from the cover for slidably receiving the flanges for movement of the cover to open and closed positions, abutment means at one end of the cover and engaged with the flanges to limit the movement of the cover to closed position, transparent means closing the slot, tongues formed on the confronting edges of the strips and engaged with the transparent means for holding the latter in place, said cover being of a length to extend beyond one end of the casing, a switch controlling the lamp bulb, and means secured to the cover for arrangement upon opposite sides of the slot to guide and facilitate holding a protector to be tested in the path of light rays through the slot.
