  • drums In the ordinary spinning frame, there are a number of drums arranged in end-to-end relation. A narrow belt is passed about each drum and drives a set of four spindles. These drums have a periphery formed of thin light sheet metal and the periphery must be true as the drums are driven at a speed of about 1200 R. P. M. and if the periphery is not true, the machine will vibrate and otherwise operate unsatisfactory. It is the practice to mount a pair of headsor ends of the adjacent drums upon a short shaft or arbor, journaled in a ball-bearing. The heads or ends are recessed and the ball-bearing projects into these recesses and it is impossible to remove the bearings without separating the drums.
  • the pair of heads or ends of the adjacent drums are arranged in close relation and are spaced for about seven-eighths of an inch. This small space between the heads or ends has rendered it diffioult to spread or separate these heads or ends and the same has been done, as far as I am aware, by prying the heads or ends apart by inserting a crowbar or like tool between the same. My invention is a device for separatingthe adjacent ends of the drums of a spinning frame, twister frame, or like textile machinery, so that the arbor or shaft supporting the drums may be removed.
In the ordinary spinning frame, there are a number of drums arranged in end-to-end relation. A narrow belt is passed about each drum and drives a set of four spindles. These drums have a periphery formed of thin light sheet metal and the periphery must be true as the drums are driven at a speed of about 1200 R. P. M. and if the periphery is not true, the machine will vibrate and otherwise operate unsatisfactory. It is the practice to mount a pair of headsor ends of the adjacent drums upon a short shaft or arbor, journaled in a ball-bearing. The heads or ends are recessed and the ball-bearing projects into these recesses and it is impossible to remove the bearings without separating the drums. It is also impossibe to remove the short shaft or arbor without separating the drums. The pair of heads or ends of the adjacent drums are arranged in close relation and are spaced for about seven-eighths of an inch. This small space between the heads or ends has rendered it diffioult to spread or separate these heads or ends and the same has been done, as far as I am aware, by prying the heads or ends apart by inserting a crowbar or like tool between the same. The operation is therefore manual. It frequently happens that in spreading or separating the heads or ends in this manner the periphery of the drum is warped or bent, due to the thin gauge of the metal forming the same with the result that the drum is frequently ruined. Further, the head or end which is ordinarily made of cast iron is frequently broken. Due to the small space between these heads or. ends, as far as I am aware, no device has been produced which will operate within this narrow space, to properly spread the heads or ends without injury to the heads or ends or the periphery of the drum. A similar situation exists with respect to the drums oftwister frames.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device having parts which are inserted in the narrow space between the heads or ends, and will spread or separate the same, and exert pressure upon the heads or ends in a proper manner, so that the heads or ends will not be broken or the p riphery of the drum bent or injured.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-mentioned character having means to apply pressure upon the heads or drums at suitable points so that there will be no tendency to twist or turn the heads or drums upon the short shaft or arbor.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-mentionedcharacter which may be applied to the adjacent end of one drum, upon the removal of the traverse rail of the spinning frame, and the devicethus applied to the end of the drum will not bend or injure the periphery of the drum, whilethe operating parts project into the narrow space between the heads of the drums. 4
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-mentioned character which is relatively simple in construction and powerful in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide hydraulic apparatus of the above-mentioned character, thereby producing a-highly simplified construction. V Y
A further object of the invention is to provide hydraulic apparatus of the above-mentioned character, all parts of which are portable.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pump for-supplying the fluid under'pressure, such pump having means to mount the same upon the rail or rails of the spinning frame.
A further object of the invention is toprovide apparatus of the above-mentioned character which may be operated by a single operator.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose The numeral 26 designates an upper feed screw,
having a flange 21 preferably integral therewith and a smooth portion 28. This smooth portion is rotatable within openings 29 and 36, formed in the webs II and I5. An end-thrust ball-bearing 3| is arranged between the flange 21 and the web I5. The numeral 32 designates a gear' having a spacing hub 33. This gear is mounted 7 upon the smooth portion 28 of the feed screw and is rigidly secured thereto to turn therewith by any suitable means such as a' key, set-screws, or both. The gear 32 is preferably slightly larger than the gears 24 and is in mesh with the ad- .jacent pair of gears 24, to turn therewith.
Mounted upon the feed screw 26 and having screw-threadedengagement therewith is a sleeve 34, provided at its inner end with a horizontal illustration are shown preferred embodiments of my invention, attention being called first to'Fig ures 1 to 7 inclusive, the numeral I designates a body portion or fram'a'which 'is circularly curved. This body portion comprises a;vertical web or platejII, having an inner horizontal flange I2. The numeral'l3'designates an adjustable vertical web having an inner horizontal flange I4., The-web I3 forms in effect a continuation of the web II and the flange I4 a continuation of the web;I2.' When the web I3 is in the closed position, thew'ebs I I and l3 extend for considerably more than 180. The web I3 is pivotally connected with the web I I, in a manher to be described. The body portion further comprises a vertical web or plate I5, arranged opposite the web I I and spaced therefrom. The web I 5 isco-extensive in length with'the web II. The numeral I 6 designates an adjustable vertical web or plate, disposed opposite the web I3 and spaced therefrom, and the web I6 is co-extensive in length with the web I3. The web I6 is pivotally connected with the web I5, by means to be described. M p v. V.
The web I3, Figure 6, has an inwardly oiT-set knuckle I'I, disposed inwardly of the web II and the web. I6 has an inwardly off-set knuckle I8 disposedinwardlyof the web I5. The webs I I and I5 are :rigidly connected bystub-shafts I 9, Figure '7, having shoulders and reduced screwthreaded ends 2|, receiving nuts 22. The stubshafts are therefore clamped to the webs I I and IS. The upper stub-shafts I9 have their reduced ends ZI cut off and spread, so that they are flush with the surface of the web I5. The stub-shafts may be attached to the webs I I and arm or" extension 35, carrying a radial jaw 36. The numeral 31 designates lower feed screws, similar to the feed screw 26 and mounted in a similar manner in openings formed in the lower ends of the webs II and I5 and the webs I3 and I6. 7 The same flange 21 is provided for these feed screws and the sameend-thrustball-bearings. Gears 36 are rigidly mounted upon the smooth portions of the feed screws 3'! and these gears are identical with the gear'32 and have the same spacing hubs. V The gears 38 are in mesh with the adjacent gears 24 and are of the same H inwardly facing radial jaws 4|, corresponding .I5 by any suitable means. In a similar manner,
the webs I3 and I6 are rigidly connected by means of stub-shafts 23, identical with the stubsha fts I9. The lowermost stub-shaft I9 has its reduced end cut off and spread and is arranged flush with the surface of the web I5 and the lowermost stub-shaft 23 has its reduced end out 01f to spread and arranged flush with the face of the web I6. stub-shafts I9 and 23 aregears 24, having hubs 25, Figure '7. ,These gears are free to rotate and they form two groups of gears, the gears, in each group being in permanent mesh. These gears 24 .are identical in shape and size. One stub-shaft I9 has its, ends inwardly of the shoulders 25 extending through the knuckles I1 and I8 and pivotally connects the web I3 with the web I I and the web I6 with the web I5. When the webs I3 and I6 are swung upon-the stubshaft I9 as a pivot, the gear 24 of these webs travels about the adjacent gear 24 carried by the webs II and I5.

As clearly shown in Figure 4, the feed screws 26 and 31 are equidistantly spaced throughout 360 whereby the jaws will so distribute the pressure upon the head of the, drum that there will be no tendency for the head to bend or buckle. While it is preferred to use three feed screws, yet I contemplate using a difierent number and may use two or any number over one, provided they are equidistantly spaced around 360. The top screw 26v has right threads and the lower screws 31 have left threads and the action of the gears is such that these screws simultaneously move their sleeves outwardly at the same speed.
Power operated means is preferably provided to drive the gear 32. This means comprises a gear 42, engaging the gear 32 and rigidly mounted upon a shaft 43, rotatable within openings formed in ears or knuckles 44 and 45, integral with the webs I5 and II. The shaft 43 extends outwardly beyond the knuckle 45 and has a worm wheel 46 rigidly secured thereto, held within a housing 41. This worm wheel is driven by a work 48, carried by a shaft 49, journ'aled in the ends of the lower portion 56 of the housing. The shaft 49 has a coupling 5|, for connection with a shaft from a suitable source of power.
In Figure 3, I have shown the adjacent ends of a pair of drums 52. These drumshave peripheries 53, in each end of which is rigidly mounted a head 54, having a hub 55. The hubs are clamped to short shaft or arbor 56, held in a ball-bearing 51, carried by a portion v56 of the frame. The heads 54 have exterior recessesto receive the ball-bearing 57. The heads have peripheries 59 to which the drum periphery 52 is originally secured. The peripheries 59 have radialfianges 60. The space between the flanges 60 is narrow and is ordinarily seven-eighths of an inch.
The inner edge of the webs I5 and I6 extend inwardly radially beyond the horizontal webs I2 and I4 providing a flange extending inwardly for substantially the same distance as the lugs 39 and 4|.
The operation of the device is as follows:
To apply the device to the adjacent ends of the drums 52, the traverse rail is removed for affording access to the drums. The body portion or frame of the device is opened by swinging the webs I3 and I9 outwardly. The horizontal flanges I2 and I4 are applied to one drum directly over the periphery 59 of the adjacent head. These flanges are preferably of substantially the same width as the periphery 59 of the head 54, and hence the weight of the device is taken from the periphery 53 of the drum, which is thin and could be readily bent. The horizontal portion 59 of the housing is spaced from the periphery 53 and therefore cannot contact with it. The webs I3 and I6 are now swung to the inner or closed position. The inner edge of the webs I5 and I6 and the lugs 39 and M now substantially contact and their combined width is slightly less than seveneighths of an inch so that they will enter the narrow space between the flanges 69. The inner edges of the flanges I5 and I6 engage the flange B9 of one drum while the lugs 39 and 4| engage the flange 99 of the other drum. The outer side of the flange 59 is that side which is remote from the space between the flanges 69. The shaft 43 is now rotated and this motion is transmitted by the gears to the feed screws. The jaws 36 and 4| are now moved from the webs I5 and I6, and the coacting webs and jaws spread the flanges 59 and their heads. Prior to this operation the setscrew of one hub is loosened, such as the setscrew with the hub 55 to the left, while the other hub 53 remains clamped to the arbor 56. The head 54 to the left is therefore slid from the arbor 55. A similar head not having the drum attached thereto is now clamped to the left end of the arbor and the lugs are returned to the inner position. The set screw of the drum 54 to the right is now loosened and the device is operated to again shift the lugs 35 to the left, This withdraws the arbor from the hub of the head 54 to the right. I have found that by the use of my device, the heads may be separated or spread and that they will not be broken nor will the peripheries 53 of the drums be bent or injured.
In Figures 8 to 14 inclusive, I have shown a modification of the invention embodying hydraulic apparatus. This apparatus comprises a body portion or frame 9| which is circularly curved. This body portion comprises vertical webs or plates 62. One vertical web 62 is provided with a laterally off-set knuckle 63, arranged upon one side of the companion web or plate 62 and pivotally connected therewith by means of a bolt 94 or the like. The frame 9!, including the assembled vertical webs or plates 62, extends for more than 180. The vertical webs 62 are provided with horizontal flanges 65, the upper ends of which substantially contact when the body portion is closed but are free from connection. The body portion may be opened by swinging the vertical Webs or plates 52 about the pivot 64. The horizontal flange 65 of each vertical web 62 is preferably formed integral therewith, forming a raised portion 99 having a groove 61 providing a shoulder 59 which is the end wall of the horizontal flange 65. This arrangement spaces the end wall 69 from the vertical web 62, as shown. At its free or lower end, one horizontal flange 65 carries a hook 69, preferably formed integral therewith and this hook is received within the opening I9 of a strap H, secured to a liner I2. The opposite end of the strap is in the form of a screw-threaded rod I3, to be arranged between spaced lugs I4, formed integral with the lower or free end of the companion horizontal flange 65. The screw-threaded rod carries a nut I5 and washer I6, as shown. The purpose of this strap is to retain the frame sections in the closed position when applied to the work, but I found that the apparatus may be used without this strap, as there is little tendency for the frame sections to open in use.
Preferably formed integral with the vertical webs or plates 52 of the'fram'e sections are horizontal cylinders H, which are spaced for 180. This is the arrangement when two of these cylinders are used but the number may be increased and where more than two are used the cylinders will be equidistantly spaced. The cylinders receive reciprocatory plungers 18, carrying plunger rods 79, operating through tubular caps 89', having screw-threaded engagement with the cylinders. Each plunger I8 is provided with suitable packing BI and a compressible coil spring 8| surrounds the plunger rod I9 and is confined between the plunger I8 and the tubular cap 89. Each plunger rod I9 projects beyond the tubular cap and is provided with a reduced cylindrical portion 82 upon which is rotatably mounted a sleeve 83, engaging against a shoulder 84 and held in place by a nut 86. The sleeve carries a lateral extension 81 having a radial jaw or spreading element 8B.
Formed integral with one vertical web 92, upon one side of the bolt or pivot 94, is a tubular boss 99, for receiving a trunnion 99, which is clamped within the tubular boss by a set screw 9|. The boss 99 is formed integral with a pressure distributing or equalizing coupling 92. A pipe 93 engages within a screw-threaded opening formed in the coupling 92 and has communication with the interior thereof and this pipe leads to a coupling 94, discharging into the inner or closed end of one cylinder 11. A flexible .pipe or hose also leads into the coupling 92 through the medium of a coupling 95 and this flexible pipe is connected with a rigid pipe 91 which leads into the inner or closed end of the other cylinder 11 through the medium of a coupling 98. The coupling 92 is preferably formed integral with a cut-off valve 99 having an inlet tubular portion I99. 7
The numeral I9I designates a flexible hose, equipped with a cut-off valve I92 having a tubular outlet portion I93 and carrying acoupling I94 for detachably connecting the valves I92 and 99.
Means are provided to supply a liquid, such as oil, under pressure through the hose I9I, including a manually operated pump. This pump comprises a vertical cylinder I95, mounted upon a base I99 also carrying a vertical reservoir or tank I97. The tank I9I'has a port I98 leading into its bottom and this port leads into a vertical port I99 discharging into the bottom of-the cylinder I95. There is a valve seat II9 engagedby a downwardly closing ball check valve I I I within a cage II2. A plunger II3 reciprocates within the cylinder I95 and is provided with suitable packing and this plunger extends above the cylinder I95 and is pivotally connected at II4 with a vertically swinging lever II5, pivoted at II6 with a link III, which is pivotally supported at its lower end at H8. The cylinder I95 has a horizontal port 9 arranged at a right angle to ablynear the body portion 6 I. is now employed to connect valves I62 and 99 'the port I08 and this port II9 leads into a 'ver tical 'port.I2Il' having a seat I2I for an upwardly opening ball check valve I23. A vertical pipe I24 leads into the vertical port I2I and this pipe I24 hasa T-coupling I25,.one end of which is connected. with the flexible hose NH. The T-coupling I25 is connected with a branch re turn pipe I26 having a cut-off valve I21 and this return pipe I26 leads into a port I 28, in communication with the port I 08. The tank I! is provided with a vertical bracket I29, rigidlysecured thereto, and this bracket carries horizontal clamps I30, to engage over the spindle rails I3I of a spinning frame. .Theseclamps carry set; screws I32, as shown;

The valve 99 is now closed so that the oil can not discharge from the cylinders I1 and the valve I62 is closed, and the valves I62 and 99 are -'now separated. The frame sections are shifted to the outer position and the frame or .body' portion is now brought into proximity to substantially contacting. The inner edges of the vertical webs 62 pass between the flanges 66 of the heads 54 while one flange 60 projects into the groove 61 and is arranged to engage with the end wall 66 of the horizontal flange 65. The sleeves 81 have previously been turned so that the radial jaws 88 extend outwardly, and these sleeves are now turned aroundso that the jaws 88 also extend between the flanges 60. The combined thickness of the webs 62 and the jaws 88 is slightly less than seven-eighths of an inch so that they willenter the narrow space between the flanges 60. The vertical webs 62 engage one flange 60 while the jaws 88 engage the other If desired, the strap II is applied to thejlower ends of the frame sections to hold them against any possibility of opening.
The pump is now applied to the rails I3I suit- Thecoupling I04 and these valves are now both opened, while the valve I2I is closed. The lever or handle H is now reciprocated and when the plunger II3 is raised the oil enters the cylinder I05 through the port I58 and when the plunger II3 moves downpast check valve I23 into the hose I6I. 'When the plunger II3 rises check valve I23 closes. It is thus seen that by operating the pump the liquid or oil under pressure will be supplied to the inner ended the cylinders 11, and the pressure in'these cylinders will be equal. The plungers I8 move forwardly carrying the jaws 88 with them. The jaws therefore move the flange 69 to the left from the flange 60 to the right'and the head 54 to the left is removed from the shaft 56, the set screw to the left being first unscrewed, while the hub 55 to the right remains clamped to the arbor 56. The head 54 to the left is therefore. slid from the" arbor 56. A similar head not having the drum attached thereto is now clamped to the left end of the arbor 56 and, the plungers I8 are returned to the inner position, which is effected by stopping the pumping action 3 and opening the valve I21, as will be more fully explained. The vertical webs 62 and the jaws 88 are now positioned between the pairs of flanges 63, the drum 54 to the left being now clamped to the arbor 56 while the set screw of the drum 5,4, to the right is unscrewed. The apparatus is then operated to move the plungers I8 outwardly and this withdraws the arbor 56 from the hub of the head 54 to the right. I have found that by the use of this device, the heads may be separated or spread and that they will not be broken nor will their peripheries 53 be bent or injured. When this operation is completed, valves I 62 and 99 remaining open, valve I2! is opened and the pressure is returned through the hose IUI and passes through return pipe I26 through port I26 back into the reservoir or tank I01. After this operation valves I62 and 99 are both closed to prevent. the escape or loss of the oil. or the fluid subsequently to which these valves are separated by the manipulation of the coupling I04. The valve I2! may now be closed,,if desired. The pump may now be separated from the rails I3I and theframe 6| removed from the drum 52.
It is to be understood that the forms of my' invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention orthe scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, com-prising a body portion to be 'arranged'exteriorly of the drum and extending about the same for more than the body portion having an adjustable side, the body portion having a part projecting into the space between the ends of the heads of the drums,.feed screws carried by th body portion and substantially equidistantly spaced, devices carried by the feed screws and having inwardly projecting jaws to enter said space and be arranged opposite said part, gears mounted upon the feed screws, gears mounted upon the body portion and engaging the gears of the feed screws so they turn in unison, and means to drive the gear carried by one feed screw.
2. A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, comprising a curved body portion including a vertical web having a horizontal web at its inner edge, an opposed vertical web projecting inwardly beyond the horizontal web, shafts connecting the vertical webs, gears arranged between the vertical webs and mounted upon the shafts, feed screws mounted upon the body portion, gears carried by the feed screws and engag ing certain of the first named gears, sleeves carried by the feed screws and having inwardly projecting jaws, and means to drive one of the gears.
3. A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, said device comprising a body portion to be arranged upon the exterior of one drum adjacent to its end and extending circumferentially of the drum, a part carried by the body portion and extending into the space between the ends of the drum to hold the body portion against movement from the end of the drum so that the'body portion is retained at the selected position upon the drum, feed screws carried by the body portion and extending longitudinally cf the drums,- sleeves carried by the feed screws and having jaws extending into the space between the ends of the drums and serving to'move one drum from the other drum, and means to turn the feed screws.

A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, said device comprising an elongated body portion to be arranged upon the ex-- terior of one drum adjacent to its end and extending circumferentially of the drum, said body portion having a relatively stationary part projecting into the space andengaging the end of the drum to hold the body portion against movement from such end so that the body portion is retained at the selected position upon the drum, feed screws carried by the body portion and extending longitudinally of the other drum, sleeves mounted upon the feed screws and having jaws extending into the space between the ends of the drums and arranged between said relatively stationary part and the end of the otherdrum, and means mounted upon the body portion to turn the feed screws so that the jaws move longitudinally of the other drum from the relatively stationary part.

Apparatus for, spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame,'twister frame or like textile machine, said drums having a thin periphery and heads at their ends, said apparatus comprising a body portion having a curved recess to receive the periphery of one drum and'extending circumferentially thereof, said body'portion including a web to engage with that portion of the drum periphery which is directly supported by the head, a vertical web spaced from and connected with the first named web and extending radially inwardly beyond the same and engaging with the end of the drum, the vertical web holding the body portion against movement from the end of the drum so that the first named web is retained upon that portion of the periphery of the drum which is directly supported by the head, feed screws mounted upon the body portion and extending longitudinally of the other drum, sleeves mounted upon the feed screws and having inwardly extending jaws, said jaws being arranged between the ends of the drums with the vertical web, and means mounted upon the body portion to rotate the feed screws.

A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, said device comprising a body portion to be arranged exteriorly of one drum and having a recess to receive the periphery of said drum, said body portion extending circumferentially of the periphery, a train of gears mounted upon the body portion, means for affecting a spreading movement between the ends of the drums including screw-threaded elements driven by certain of the gears of the train, and means to drive one of the gears of the train.

A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, said body portion to be arranged exteriorly of one drum, cylinders secured to the body portion, plungers operating within the cylinders and having plunger rods, spreading elements carried by the plunger rods and arranged for insertion between the spaced ends of the dl llms,
means carried by the body portion and stationary with relation thereto and. to be arranged between the spaced ends of the drums to engage the end of the drum carrying the body portion to hold the body portion against movement in one direction, and means to supply a fluid under pressure into the cylinders. I

A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, said device comprising a body portion to be arranged exteriorly upon one drum and having an inwardly extendingpart which is relativelystationary with respect to the body portion and to be arranged between th ends of the drums to bear against the end of the drum which carries the body portion, plungers operating within the cylinders and having plunger rods, spreading elements carried by the plunger rods and arranged for insertion between the inwardly extending part and the end of th other drunrto bear against such end, and means to supply fluid under pressure into the cylinders;

A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, said drums having a thin periphery and heads at their ends, said heads having radial flanges extending beyond the peripheries of the drums, said apparatus being adapted to be arranged upon the periphery of one drumadjacent to its head, said body portion being provided with a recess to receive one flange and'having an inwardly projecting part to be arranged between the flanges, cylinders mounted upon the body portion, plungers within the cylinders and having plunger rods, spreading elements carried by the plunger rods and arranged to be disposed between the flanges, and means to supply a fluid under pressure into the cylindGIS. A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a-spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, said drums having flanges adjacent to their ends, said device comprising a body portion to be arranged upon onedrum adjacent to the flange and having a recess to receive the flange and also having an inwardly projecting part to be arranged between the flanges, cylinders mounted upon the body portion, plungers within the cylinders having plunger rods, springs to move the plungers in one direction, means to supply fluid under pressure into the cylinders, and spreading elements pivotally mounted upon the plunger rods and having parts to be arranged between the flanges of the drums.

A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, said device comprising a body portion having a recess to receive the periphery of one drum, said body portion including sections which are hinged together, each section comprising a radial web to extend into the space between the drums and a flange to rest upon the drum, cylinderscarried by the sections, plungers within the cylinders having plunger rods, spreading elements carried by the plunger rods and adapted to be arranged within the space between the drums, and means to supply fluid under pressure into the cylinder.
12. A device for spreading the spaced ends of drums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, said device comprising a body portion having a recess to receive the periphery of one drum, said body portion including sections which are hinged together,

15 Apparatus for spreading the spaced ends 7 ofdrums of a spinning frame, twister frame or like textile machine, said drums having thin peripheries and heads at their ends, said heads having radial flanges extending beyond the peripheries, said apparatus comprising a body portion to extend circumferentially of the periphery of one drum and to be arranged upon such periphery adjacent to and upon the outer side of the flange of such drum and engaging that portion of the periphery which is directly over and supported by said head, a relatively stationary element secured to the body portion and adapted to extend into the-space between the ends of the drumsupon the inner side of the flange of the first drum to contact with the head of the first drum-and to hold the body portion against outward movement in position substantially directly-over the head of the first drum, spreading means mounted upon the body portion and extending into the space between the inner sides oi the flanges and disposed between the relatively stationary element andthe inner side of the flange ofthe other drum, and means tomove the'spreading'means from the element. v 'l 6.
