llll' i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALLACE H. CAMP, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE SCOVI'LL 'MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.4
PosT-OFFlcE-Box Doon.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. `224=,141,`. `1ated February '3, 1880.
i Application iled'pecember 26, 1879. l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE H. CAMP, of Waterbury, in the county of' New Havenand State of Connecticut. have inventedl a new Iniprovement in Post-Oflice-Box Doors and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which Vdrawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure l, a front View; Fig 2, a transverse section on linens x; Fig. 3, a section on line zz.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of post-oflce-hox doors which are made from metal and which are provided with glass panels, so that the interior of the box may be seen from the outside when the door is closed. v 1
In the usual construction it has been found necessary to form a guard outside the glass to prevent access to the box should the glass be broken. This guard, which is in the form of an' open metal-work, prevents cleaning the glass and otherwise interferes with'properly seeing the interior of the box.
The object of this invention is vto avoid this outside guard; and it consists inthe construction, as hereinafter described, and particularlyV recited in the claim.
A represents the door-frame, and B the four sides of the door, hinged to the frame in the usual manner. The frame is made with arabbet, a, upon the inside, within which the4 glass C will rest.
Across the center of the door, and in rear of the glass, is a bar, D, this barbeing designed to receive the lock. The glass C is athick plate,
and made so as to pass between the bar D and the rabbet a, as seen in Fig. 2. At the center or opposite the bar`D the glass is perforated,
as at d, andl through this a iianged sleeve, e, is introduced and screwed into the bar I), or
`otherwise attached to it,so that the flange will bear upon the outside of the glass and forma `finish around the perforation in'the glass. This sleeve is designed to inclose the hub of the lock, which is placed upon the bar so that the hub will pass through the sleeve e andbe secured to the bar D.
Instead of the flanged sleeve e, the hub of the lock may pass through the bar D and the perforation iu the glass, andthen a collar secured to the hub will cover the joint, the essent-iai feature of the invention being that there shall be an openingl ythrough the glass through which the lock may be reached.
By this construction the entire space within the frame may be filled by a single pane of thick glass, giving an unobstructed view of the interior of the box, and also enabling the exterior ofthe glass to be readily cleaned.
i I claim--v A metallic door for post-office boxes having an opening, with the lock-bar in rear, coinbined with a single glass panel introduced inside the door, but outside the said lock-bar, and constructed with a perforation corresponding with the hub of the lock, substantially` as described. i
WALLACE E. CAMP.
