DOVETAlLlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,106, dated February 3, 1880.
Application filed December 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS W. PARKER, of Brunswick, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dovetailing-Machiues; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a top plan. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the cutters. Fig. 5 represents the tilting table in position for cutting the sides of box-stuff; and Fig. 6 shows, in perspective, specimens of dovetailing done with my improved machine.
Corresponding parts in. the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to machines for forming in the sides and ends of bOXStUfE dovetail mortises by which such sides and ends may be joined together; and it consists in certain improvements in said machines, which will be, hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
1n the annexed drawings, A represents a suitable frame or table provided with bearings for two shafts, B O, which are provided with adjustable collars 1) D, so as to be longitudinally adjustable in their bearings. Motion is imparted to said shafts through the medium of band-wheel or pulley E.
The front ends of the shafts B O project through the front side of frame A, and are there provided with cutters F G. The cutter F, which, for convenience, I term the beveled cutter, consists of a head of the shape of a truncated pyramid, attached upon the end of the shaft, with its base turned out from the frame, as shown, and provided on opposite sides with adjustable cutters or blades. The cutter G is constructedin a like manner, with the exception that its sides are straight or parallel to each other. Both cutters are provided upon their front faces with dovetailed grooves, in which are fitted adj ustable spurs H, the object of which is to cut perpendicularly into the stuff before the knives, and thereby prevent splintering.

Uis a lever pivoted to the front side of the tilting table M by a screw, V, passing through a slot, W, in said lever, which may, therefore, be moved upon its fulcrum .to a sufficient extent to enable its upper end, which is provided with a hook or catch, X, to be adjusted in any one of a series of openings, Y, in the front side of frame S, for the purpose of sliding the latter to its proper position in front of one of the cutters.
The lever U is held in position by a spring, Z, secured to frame I, and pressing its lower end in an outward direction toward asegmental plate, A, also secured adj ustably to said frame by two set-screws, B B, passing through slots 0 O in said plate. The latter is provided upon its rear side with pins D, upon which the lever U may be hooked to secure it in position while the operation of cutting is in progress.
The frame I is provided upon its under side with beveled mortises, to accommodate the triangular projections E upon a slide, F, reciprocating upon a bracket, G, affixed to the front side of frame A.
The slide F is provided with an arm, H, projecting downward through a slot in the bracket G.
I is a shaft journaled in suitable bearings in frame A, and provided with a large pulley, J, connected by a band, K, with a small pulley upon one of the driving-shafts. At its outer end the shaft I is provided with a disk, L, connected by an eccentrically-pivoted rod, M, with the arm H of slide F. The reciprocating motion of the latter, by the mechanism just described, tends, as will be seen, to alternately raise and lower the frame I, with its attachments, in front of the cutters.
For the purpose of operating frame I when it is not convenient to have it operated by power, as described, I provide a foot-lever, N, hinged to the rear side of frame A, and connected by a pivoted rod, 0, with the rear end of a lever, P, secured transversely upon a rock-shaft, Q, having its bearings in the sides of frame, A. The forward end of lever P extends into a slot, It, in the lower framepiece of frame I, which thus, by the exertion of a downward pressure upon the free end of lever N, may be raised or lifted.
The box-stuff to be inortised in my improved machine is secured in the clamping-frame S, which is fed forward to the cutters by means of the leverU. The inortises in the end pieces are cut by the cutter F by a single upward movement of frame I, the result being the dovetail mortise represented at S, Fig. 6.
The mortises in the side pieces are cut by cutter G in two upward movements of the frame I, while the table M is tilted in opposite directions. T, Fig. 6, shows the mortise thus formed.
Having thus described myinveution, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination, with the frame A, havin g the rotary cutters constructed an (1 arranged substantially as herein described, of the vertically-sliding frame I, having tilting table M, and the clamping-frame S, sliding upon the latter, as set forth.
2. In a mortising-machine constructed and operating substantially as described, the combination of the vertically-sliding frame I, tiltin g table M, sliding clamping-frame S, slotted lever U, spring Z, and adjustable segmental plate A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
