SULKY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,035, dated February 3, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. NEFF, of Cuba, Fulton county, State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 isa plan view; Fig.2, a side elevation; Fig. 4., an enlarged detail of the leverconnection; Fig. 5, a cross-section on line a: a: of Fig. 2, enlarged; and Fig. 3, a modification of the lever attachment.
The object of this invention is to provide the plow of a sulky-plow with a limited free vertical movement through or by the handlever connection, and to improve the details of construction and its nature consists in providing devices for regulating" the direction and play of the tongue or guide-pole.

The bar or beam E and the tongue or guidepole F are made ofwood, and the other parts are, by preference, made of iron. The bent axle or frame A is made of flat bar-iron, and
5 is bent up sufficiently far to permit the raising of the plow up out of the ground,
The spindleB and the braces J K are permanently attached to the part A. The opposite spindle (not shown) is to be adjustably attached by any suitable Orwell-known means.
The plow-beam D is pivoted to the front end of the brace-bars J, so that it may turn between them. The bent rock-shaft, O is journaled to or through the bent axle A, and its projecting end is provided with a crank or lever head, I, which has its face provided with a slot or opening, t, formed, as shown at Fig. 4, so as to give the rock-shaft O a limited free play on the lower end of the hand-lever. By this arrangement the shaft 0 can rock or play freely on the hand-lever when locked within the limits of the opening '5, which movement permits the plow to rise and fall when the hand-lever is locked without lifting or depressing any portion of the frame-work. The shaft 0 can be rocked to any desired position, by continuing the movement of the hand-lever after the limit of free play has been reached, and by continuing it far enough the plow is raised and may be held out of the ground.
In the modification shown at Fig. 3 the lever G is carried forward and pivoted to the ,bar E, and its lower end connected with the crank or lever head'I by means of a link, I, and in this change it will be found more convenient to make the slot t in the link, which allows the same free play to the rock-shaft and the rising and falling of the plow as that given by the slot '5 in the head shown at Fig. 4. This modification can be carried to the rear of the axle instead of the front. and the link I may be pivoted to the handlever above its piyot, as well as below.
The plow-beam is connected with the rockshaft by means of two hangers encircling the shaft and turning upon it, and they are pivoted to the plow beam. They are adjusted along the shaft and kept in place by the collar and set-screw 9. At the rear end of the tongue there is placed on the bar E a plate, b,through which the bolt 0 passes. Its face is serrated or roughened to engage with'correspouding serrations or roughenings on the bottom of the bracket a. The bracket or is provided with a bolt, d, for holding the rear end of the tongue F, and it is provided with a slot, a, through which the bolt 0 passes. By this arrangement the rear end of the tongue can be shifted laterally in either direction, and when adjusted it is locked in place by the bolt 0.
' The inverted stirrup e at the front end of the bar E acts as a pivot in shifting the line of the tongue. It also limits the up-and-down movement of the tongue, and prevents the mounted frame from tipping forward. This stirrup is made adjustable in height by means of the slots f and the bolt passing through them, there being on the opposite side a slot corresponding to the one shown at f, Fig. 2.
A clevis, drivers seat, foot-board, wheels, leveling devices, and a plow are to be applied. They may be of any well-known construction, and suitable ones are shown in another application made by me-of even date herewith.
The bars J are pivoted to the axle or frame A, and also to the plow-beam D, which permits an easy vertical movement at the front end while it is guided sidewise. By attaching the plow-beam in this manner the free play of the rock-shaft is not confined to the plow, as it would be, in the main, if the arms were rigid, and by changing the position of the rock-shaft the front end of the beam can be elevated or depressed so as to change or gage the running depth of the plow without changing the position of the frame or" making the connection rigid.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the pivoted tongue F, the adjustable inverted stirrup e, and slotted bracket a, the pivotal bolt d, serrated plate b, and bolt a, substantially as shown and described.
