FLUSH- TANK.

SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,826, dated January 27, 1880.

Application filed July 24, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. WARING, Jr., of the city of Newport, in the State of Rhode .Island, have made a new and useful Improvement in Flush-Tanks for the flushing of drains, of which the following is such a clear and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make and use the same, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a plan, ofmy improved flush'tank. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.

Flush-tanks have been used for some years for the purpose of retaining the flow of drainage or sewage until a certain amount is accumulated in the tank, and then discharging the accumulation suddenly and rapidly by the ac tion of a siphon, by the-withdrawal of a plug, by the opening of a valve, or by the tilting of a tumbler-tank, iii such amauner as to cause a cleansing-flow to pass through a drain be yond. v

It is found in practice that grease and other accumulations smear, silt up, and otherwise obstruct the operation of these various devices, and contribute lumps of undissolved matters to the flow in such a manner as to render the drain liable to become obstructed by their deposit.

Grease-traps or settling-basins have been used for the purpose of withholding the grease and other obstructing material, allowing only the liquid portions of the sewage to pass into the drain. These grease-traps onlypartially accomplish the desired purpose, for the reason that they have no provision for accumulating an amount of sewage, and by its rapid discharge causing a cleansing-flow into the drain beyond. I

My invention does away with the danger of obstructing the flush-tank or the drain beyond it,

the course of the same drain a flush-tank and a grease-trap, the latter being nearest to the source of the sewage, in such a manner that the good offices of both may be secured.

In the figures, A B represent the combined grease-trap and flush-rank, in which A is the grease trap; B, the flush-tank; O, a partitionwall separating the two; I), a pipe having its inlet below its outlet; E, the inlet, or drain, or sewer on the side toward the source of the sewage, and F the-siphon by which the flushtank B is emptied of its contents. This siphon is not an essential part of my invention, as the discharge may be effected by the use of a tumbler-tank or valve or other device.

I do not wish to confine myself to the method of construction indicated herein. It is not the same structure. They may be separate structures, located at any convenient points in the course of the drain or sewer, the purpose in View being, first, to receive the drainage into some form of grease-trap or settling-basin having a suitable device for delivering the liquid portion and retaining the solid portion, and in combination with this, and fartherdown the drain, to have some form of flush-tank by which the discharge may be accumulated and delivered with rapidity into the drain. beyond.
