(01. 84-398) My invention relates to mouthpieces for all brass musical instruments, such as, comet, bugle, fleugelhorn, French horn, alto horn, trombone, baritone euphonium, mellophone, sousaphone, bass horn, tuba, etc. and refers more particularly to rounded rims or so-called cushioned-rim and vacuum producing mouthpieces.
One object of my invention is to provide a mouthpiece for all brass musical instruments wherein the entrance to the tone chamber, when the lips of the player are applied to the mouthpiece, is cushioned.
Another object of my invention is to provide a mouthpiece for all brass musical instruments, wherein the rim of the tone chamber is cushioned or rounded to fit the lips of the player and there is a preferably rounded recess up and under the cushioned rim portion.
It is obvious that with this type of mouthpiece the lips of the player can be positioned as desired and when the instrument is played, the lips will be held against the rounded or cushioned rim of the tone chamber and the lips can fully move and vibrate within the tone chamber and the undercut or recessed portion back of, up and under the said rim cushion, when the player blows through the tone chamber, will cause a relatively strong vacuum in this recessed portion that will hold thelips of the player positioned as desired and at the same to be moved on this rounded cushioned rim portion.
I attain these results preferably by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein like parts are referred to by similar numerals, in which:

The mouthpiece, which can be made of any suitable material, is comprised of a shank l, tapered inwardly at 2, to fit the mouthpipe of a musical instrument and a bell shaped end 3, is formed on one end to provide a tone chamber 4.
This bell shaped end is provided with a cushioned rim 5, rounded at 6 and more particularly at 1, to give this cushioned effect and recessed inwardly, up and under the rim at 8, so as to provide a space or recess where a vacuum will be produced whenever the player blows into the tone chamber 4. The tone chamber 4, is preferably rounded into the throat 9, and this throat is tapered outwardly at H] to H, the end ll, having a relatively thin tip, as it has been found that when this end H is very thin, the notes produced are much clearer and fuller in tone.
time will allow the players lips Having thus illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction or arrangement of parts shown, since it is evident that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a mouthpiece of the character described, a shank formed to provide a throat and an outlet passage, a hell with a rim formed on one end of said shank, a tone chamber within said bell connected with the said throat and said outlet passage having a thin tip, said tone chamber provided with a portionrecessed up and under the said rim providing a partial vacuum means.
2. In a mouthpiece of the character described, a shank providing a throat and outlet passage, said shank tapered to fit the mouthpipe of a musical instrument, a bell with a rim formed on one end of said shank, a tone chamber within the bell connected with the throat and outwardly tapered outlet passage with a thin tip, said tone chamber provided with a portion recessed up and under said rim, providing a suction means.
3. In a mouthpiece of the character described, a shank with a throat and outlet passage therein, said shank tapered inwardly to fit the mouthpipe of a musical instrument, a bell with a rounded rim providing a cushioning effect to the lips of the player of said instrument formed on one end of said shank, a suitably shaped tone chamber formed within said bell and connected with said throat and a tapered outlet passage terminating in a relatively thin tip, said tone chamber provided with an outwardly projecting recessed portion up and under said rounded rim providing a partial suction means.
4. In a mouthpiece of the character described, a shank with a throat and outlet passage therewithin, said shank tapered inwardly to fit the mouthpipe of a musical instrument, a bell with a rounded rim formed on one end of said shank, a tone chamber within said bell connected with the said throat and outlet passage, said outlet passage outwardly tapered with relatively thin walls, said tone chamber provided with a portion recessed up and under said rounded rim providing a suction means.
5. In a mouthpiece of the character described, a shank providing a throat and outlet passage, said shank tapered inwardly to fit the mouthpipe of a musical instrument, a bell with a rounded rim providing a cushioning efiect to the lips of the player of the musical instrument formed on one end of said shank, a suitably shaped relatively large tone chamber formed within said bell and connected with the said throat and outlet passage that is provided with a thin tip, said tone chamber provided with an outwardly projecting rounded recessed portion up and under the said rounded rim, roundedly connected to the said tone chamber providing a partial vacuum therewithin adapted to hold the players lips positioned upon said rim.
