Description
UNTTED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
JACOB FRICK, OF PHILADELPHIA,v PENNSYLVANIA.
FEED-WATER AND BLOW-OFF APPARATUS FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,284, dated December 14, 1858i.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ACOB Frick, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in my Patent Feed and Blow-Off Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in, or addition to, the feed and blow-oft apparatus, for which Letters Patent were granted to me on the eighteenth day of March, A. D. 1856; and my improvement consists in combining with this apparatus, in the manner set forth hereafter, an air vessel with cocks and branches, affording a means of throwing a jet of water to any part of a building, so that the instrument, in addition to the advantages described in the above mentioned patent, becomes available for extinguishing fires, as well as for supplying water to different apartments for manufacturing and other purposes.
In order to enable others to make and use my improvement, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The view in the annexed drawing, represents, partially in section, a view of my patent feed and blow-off apparatus for steam boilers, with my improvements.
The body of the instrument is similar to that, for which Let-ters Patent were granted to me on the 18th day of March, 1856, and consists of a check valve communicating with a combined blow-ofi and feed cock B, one branch C of which is screwed into the boiler, the other branch I) forming the blowoff passage.
M is the safety-valve operating in a chest L. the latter, beneath the seat of the valve, communicatin0', through a passage m, with the chamber beneath the check valve and with the interior of the branch K, to which the feed pipe J is connected.
R- is a rod, operating in a chest Q, the interior of which is so formed, in respectto a piston on the said rod, that, when an excess of pressure raises the valve IWI and its weighted lever O, the water will pass into the chamber Q, and impart to the rod R a series of pulsations, which will cause a bell to ring, and notify the attendant, when any undue obstruction is presented to the regular flow of water into the boiler.
As the construction and operation of the whole of the above mentioned parts are fully set forth in my aforesaid patent, a further description of them will be unnecessary.
To a projection S, on t-he casing L of the above described instrument, I attach a pipe T, the interior of which con'imunicates, through the above mentioned chamber m, with the chamber beneath the check valve, and wit-h the feed pipe J.
V is an ordinary air vessel, attached to the pipe T, a cock t intervening, for the purpose of opening or closing `the communication between the two. A cock n is also secured to the top of the air vessel, a pipe projecting downward from the cock into the interior of the air vessel, and any convenient number of branches projecting from the cock, for receiving swivel bends w, to which a nozzle or hose for throwing a stream of water may be attached.
It will now be seen without further description, that the above addition to my patent feed and blow-off apparatus affords a means of instantly extinguishing any fire, which may accidentally occur in the neighborhood of the boiler, or in any part of the building in which it may be situated. It may also be used as a means of forcing water, which may be required for manufacturing or other purposes, to any part of the building.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
Combining an air-vessel, having cocks and branches, arranged substantially as herein described, with the feed and blow-off apparatus. for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me on the eighteenth day of March, A. I). 1856, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof. I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB FRICK. lVitnesses HENRY HowsoN, HENRY ODIORNE.
