The outwardly extending portion 280 of said door structure serves as a continuous trim for covering the joint between the frame l8 and door 20.
Each set of links 2| and 22 has one end of each Zia and 22a, respectively, pivoted on spaced pins 23 and 24, respectively, the latter being fitted to extend from spaced points along frame portion 2%, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Cotterpins 21 and 28 retain the link ends Zia and 22a, respec tively, on pins 23 and 23, respectively. The other ends 2|b and 22b of links 2| and 22, respectively, are pivoted on spaced pins 25 and 26, respectively, said pins being fitted to extend from an angle piece 29 which is secured to the side wall l'la of the housing As seen in Figs. 1 to 4, spacing collars 25a, and 26a are provided on ins 2 5 and 26, respectively, for aligning the link ends 2|a with 2|b, and 22a with 22b. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, a single lock pin 30 may be used to retain the link ends 21b and 22b on pins 25 and 26, respectively.
Each link 2|, the longest of the set, is a flat bar which preferably extends about three quarters the distance from the side housing wall Ha supporting the link end Zla to the opposite housing side wall l'lb. Each link 22, shorter than link 2|, instead of being of uniform cross-section like the latter has an extended portion 220 which serves as a stop when effective to positively retain the door 20 in a fixed open position and cooperates with link 2| to limit such open swinging so that the door cannot come into contact with the ceiling surface surrounding the frame I8 except when closed as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
In practising the invention the fixture H] is constructed as described above and the parts as- I sembled as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. The housing I1 is provided with a central opening in the wall He thereof slightly smaller than the open side of the junction box I2 and is fitted under the cover plate l4, being retained to the box |2 by suitable screws 3| as shown in Fig. 1. In assembling the housing H to the frame l8 it has been found that rim edges of the housing adjacent the plane of the surface of the ceiling against which the door 20 abuts should be located just above said plane as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4. The housing side l'lb can be provided with an inturned flange I'ld along said rim edge, said flange lld being drilled and threaded at 32 to receive the pointed end screw 33 which has its head seated in the door portion 200. Another pointed end screw 34 is provided in the door portion 230 oppositely disposed to screw 33, the screw 34 engaging in a drilled and threaded hole 35a in angle piece 35 extending from the inside surface of housing side lla inwardly from the rim edge of the housing I! as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. In order to properly locate the rim edge of housing as described above, space slot and screw fastening means 36 are provided, the screws 360. being inserted to extend through the housing slots 36b and engaging in the threaded holes 360 in frame portion |8c as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. By loosening the fastening means 36 the housing I! can be adjusted by raising or lowering to proper position, and said fastening means then tighten to rigidly retain same. With all the parts assembled and the screws 33 and 34 in place, the fixture door is tightly closed, a rubber or felt gasket 31 being provided if desired along the inner side of the door flange 200 to cushion the door closure, and fibre washers 38 may be provided on the necks of the screws 33 and 34, to prevent said screws from accidentally dropping out of place.
To open the fixture for replacing the lamp B, or for any other purpose, the screws 33 and 34 are loosened until they disengage the threaded holes 32 and 3511, respectively, the door 20 can then be readily swung to open from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 3. In the latter position the door 20 is prevented from further swinging and cannot be made to touch or mar the ceiling surrounding the frame Hi. This is accomplished by the extended link portion 220 acting as a stop against angle piece 29 at the rim portion of the housing side Ha, the link 2| then firmly bracing the suspended door structure in said open position, asseen from Fig. 3.
The door 20, although shown here as being square, may have other rectangular shapes or may be oval or the like.
Where the door 28 is relatively small, the modified form shown in Fig. may be used. Here only one side of the door may be provided with a set of two links 2| and 22 and on the opposite side the long link 2| may be omitted. The short link 22 alone on the latter side will be found sufficient for all practical purposes.
It should be noted that in both forms of the invention shown and described that the links 2| and 22 of each set cooperate in the swinging movement of the door 20 to positively control same so that no part of said door 20 can come in contact with any surface surrounding the door 29 except in the closed position thereof.
It will thus be seen that the lighting fixture and unit construction as provided achieve the objects of the invention and are well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use in an efiicient manner.
As various embodiments might be made in the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matters herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings are to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A lighting fixture casing comprising a housing for a light source formed with an open side, a door frame fitted to said open side, a door carrying a light transmitting member through which light rays are projected from said source and forming a closure over said door frame, sets of two unequal link bars having one end of each bar pivoted to a side of said frame, the pivoted ends of the longer bars being located inwardly of said open side a spaceddistance from the pivoted ends of the shorter bars, the other end of each bar being pivoted to the door, the pivoted ends of longer bars on the door being located at a greater distance from said frame side than the pivoted ends of the shorter bars, at least one of the shorter bars having an extended portion serving as a stop to abut with said frame side for limiting the swinging movement of the door away from frame.
2. A lighting fixture construction of the recessed ceiling or wall type comprising a casing having an open side for housing a light source, a door frame fitting into an opening in said ceiling or wall in which the fixture isrecessed, means adjustably securing the door frame to the casing within said open side, a door carrying a transparent member through which light rays from said source project forming a closure over the door frame and extend beyond the latter to provide a trim covering the joint between said frame and door, means for swingably supporting the door to and away from said frame including at least one pair of cooperating bar links of unequal length, one end of each link pivoted to a side of the frame, the pivoted end of the longer link being located inwardly of said open side a spaced distance from the pivoted end of the shorter link, the other ends of the links being pivoted to the door, the pivoted end of the longer link on the door being located at a greater distance from said frame side than the pivoted end of the shorter link, the shorter link having an extended portion serving as a stop means adapted to abut said frame side for limiting the swing movement of the door away from the frame and for positively preventing the door in open position to contact the ceiling or wall surface regions about the frame, and releasable fastening means extending through spaced portions of the door for retaining the latter in closed position to the 0 casing.
