Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
PHILO H. VIETS, or BIRMINGHAM, connnorrcur.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,756, dated December 16, 1879; application filed April 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PnrLo H. VIETs, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in House and Ro'om Ventilators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is arepresentation of a front view of a window frame and sashes with my ventilator applied; and Fig. 2 is a section of the frame, showing the construction of the ventilator.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for ventilatin g rooms by means of the windowsashes; and the nature of the invention consists in certain novel combinations of parts, whereby the position of the sashes relative to each other is so regulated that an upward. draft is created between the meetingrails of said. sashes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A desi gnates a window-frame having the usual parting-strips and inside and outside holdingstrips, between which are arranged the" upper sash, B, and the lower sash, B.
0 indicates a preferably wooden guard, secured to the sill of frame A, and extending upwardtherefrom on a level, or nearly so, with the upper edge of the lower bar, a, of the loweror inside sash, the guard being from one I and a half to two inches high, or thereabout.
Upon the lower rail of the sash is secured a me;
tallic plate, 1), having a slot, 8, at right angles to the length of said rail, and attached at any desired position thereon, either central or otherwise. I11 a corresponding position on the guard is rigidly secured a spring-actuated catch, I), the bolt of which moves at right angles to the plane of the window-opening, and,
passing through the slot 8, engages the rail of the lower sash through the said slot. By raisin gthe lower sash one or two inches, the springcatch D being retracted and the said catch released, an interval, 61, is created between the sashes at their meeting-rails that directsan upward current of fresh air between the said rails into the room,that will in no way inconvenience a person sitting at the window, the guard O forming a sufficiently tight joint with the lower rail of the sash, and allowing no air to penetrate through it.
The interval at between the sashesis regulated at pleasure by means of the catch.
The same result may be obtained by securing the guard to the top rail of the frame, outside of the top sash, and providing the said sash with a spring-actuated catch engaging the side of the frame, which may be provided with spaced holes for the reception of the catch.
I am aware that a catch holding either the upper sash or the lower sash in any desired position, there being an opening either at the top or bottom of the frame, is not new, and, consequently, I make no claim to such inventiou; but
What I do claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The window-ventilator consisting of the frame A, having the guard G fitting snugly against the sash, a catchupon the guard or sash, and a latch upon the frame or sash, the whole combined substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. I
PHILO H. VIETS;
Witnesses:
S. M. GARDNER, H. G. Fosmoir.
