My invention relates generally to portable power tools, and particularly to an arrangement of this character in which an electric motor is incorporated, the tool being adapted for drilling or similar purposes, and an important object of my invention is to provide a simple and efiicient arrangement of the character indicated at extremely low cost.
Another important-object of my invention is to provide in an arrangement of the character indicated, a structure and arrangement of parts enabling the mounting and operative connection of electric motors of different sizes and types.
Other important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with .the drawings, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown preferred embodiments of my invention.

Figure 1 is a general elevational view of an embodiment of the invention.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the nu-- meral 5 generally designates the gear case of the arrangement which is generally rectangular in form and is hollowed out as indicated by the numeral 6 to accommodate the various gears. Upper and lower plates 1 and 8, respectively, are bolted to the top and bottom of the body portion 5 as indicated by the numerals 9. Adjacent and occupying one end of the hollow portion of the remaining body of the case 5 is the chuck gear wheel Ill which is fixedly mounted on the chuck shaft H whose upper end is received in the bushing i2 on the upper plate I 'andwhose lower portion turns in upper and lower bushings l3, I4, re-
spectively, mounted in 2. depending neck IE on the lower plate 8 as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. The large chuck gear wheel I0 is in mesh with a relatively small idler pinion l 6 which is fixed to a stub shaft whose upper end is journaled in an upper bearing bushing l1 and whose lower end is journaled in a generally similar bearing bushing I8, these bushings being mounted on the upper and lower plates l and 8. The idler pinion I5 is located at one side of the longitudinal axis of the gear case and at the opposite side of this longitudinal axis is the drive pinion 5 [9 which is mountedon the stub shaft whose lower end is mounted in the bushng 2! on the lower plate 8, the upper part of the-shaft turnng in L3. bushing 22 on the upper plate l and the upper end of the shaft 20 having fixed thereon m the motor shaft arbor 23 which has a bore as to receive the lower end of the shaft 25 of the electric motor 21, a set screw 28 traversing the side of the arbor to lock the motor shaft in place thereon. lb
The chuck shaft H has a thrust collar 29 thereon just below the lower bushing M and below this the chuck shaft is threaded as indicated by the numeral 30 to operatively mount the conventional chuck 3! which accommodates a drill 20 bit 32 or some other rotary acting tool such as a grinder, buffer, or the like, as the work may require.
A U-shaped adjusting bracket 33 has foot portions 34, 35 which engage the top of the upper 25 case plate 1, these feet being bolted as indicated by the respective numerals 36 and 31 to the said top plate and being provided in the bight portion 38 with a longitudinal slot 39 for adjustment purposes. A bolt 40 passes through this slot 39 and 30 through the foot portion ll of the L-shaped attaching brace which is generally designated 42 and which has at its upper end a laterally extending handle 43 which is bolted thereto as indicated by the numeral 44 or otherwise secured 85 in place thereon. Intermediate portions of the standard part of the attaching brace 42 are formed with aligned vertically spaced vertically elongated slots 45, 46, visible in Figure 1, which are traversed by respective bolts 47, 48 which are ac engaged with selected ones of thefeet 49 On the selected electric motor 21 in such a way as to support the motor with its axis in a vertical position and operatively connected with the arbor 23 already described. A suitable current supply as cable 50 leads to the motor 21 from a suitable source (not shown). Because of the provisions described above, the arrangement can accommodate motors 21 of diiiferent diameters and arrangement of feet, whereby motors of difierent 50 sizes and formations .are easily adapted for use in the present invention.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application oi the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the materials and in the structure and arrangement of the parts, within the spirt of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A portable power drill comprising a horizontal member, a drill chuck shaft depending from and journalled on one side of said horizontal member, a motor shaft arbor rising from and journalled on the opposite side of said horizontal member, gear means operatively connecting said motor shaft arbor and said drill chuck shaft, a combined drill handle and motor bracket rising from said horizontal member, said combined drill handle and motor bracket comprising a first element fastened to said horizontal member, a second element rising from said first element and having a laterally projecting handle adjacent its upper end, adjusting means securing said second element to said first element and enabling adjusting said second element toward and away from the axis of -said motor shaft arbor, and vertically adjustable motor base attaching means on said second element whereby motors of different sizes may be supported by said second element in operative relation to said motor shaft arbor.
2. In combination, a horizontal member, a drill chuck shaft depending from and journalled on said horizontal member, a motor shaft arbor rising from said horizontal member in laterally spaced relation to said drill chuck shaft, means operatively connecting said motor shaft arbor and said drill chuck shaft, 9. combined drill handle and motor bracket rising from said horizontal member, said combined drill handle and motor bracket comprising a first element secured on said horizontal member, a second element rising from said first element, adjusting means connecting said second element to said first element and enabling adjusting said second element toward and away from the axis of said motor shaft arbor to accommodate motors of different diameters, vertically adjustable motor base attaching means on said second element to accommodate motors of different heights, an electric motor having its base secured to said second element by said attaching means, said motor having its shaft in a vertical depending position, and coupling means connecting said motor shaft with said motor shaft arbor.
3. The combination recited by claim 2 wherein the upper part of said second element is provided with a laterally extending drill manipulating hand grip overhanging said electric motor.
