INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented Aug. 20, 1940 WATCH CLEANING MACHINE Irving Friedman, Newark, N. J., assignor, by direct and mesne assignments, to
Efco Manuiacturing Company, Newark, N. .L, a corporation New Jersey Application July 22, 1937, Serial No. 155,029 2 Claims. (Ci. 141-1) This invention relates to improvements in machines for cleaning watch works and thelike, such as, for example, is shown in my copending patent application, Serial No. 90,829, which has matured into Patent 2,104,456, dated January 4th, 1938, of which this application is a continuation in part. 1
In the cleaning of watches, it is necessary to immerse the works in agitated liquids; inas-.
1o much as the parts of a watch are very small,
it is inconvenient and'iinpractical to do this by manual means.
.It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a machine for cleaning watch works havll ing a base on which a plurality of containers are secured, one or more of the containers being adapted to contain cleaning fluid and one container being provided with means for thoroughly drying the watch works.
go A further object of my invention is to provide the machine with thermal means for drying'the watch parts.
A further object of my invention is to provide a machine havingfa novel holder for the watch 3" works basket, the holder being adapted to be readily secured to or removed from the machine.
A further object of my invention is to provide a watch cleaning machine which is efllcient, positive and tamper-proof in operation and permago nent in construction.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement oi parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the u accompanying drawings, forming .part hereof,
and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a watch cleaning machine embodyin my invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing one of the containers of my machine .with a cover secured thereto.
Fig. 4 is a similar, partly fragmentary, view or the drying container of my machine, showing a a heating element mounted therein,
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of said container with a heating element and fan mounted therein,
Fig. 61s a bottom plan view 0! the cover shown in Fig. 3,

clock works adapted to be used in my machine, and Fig. 10 is a vertical sectional view .of aholder comprising a multiple frame having a plurality of sections, each section being adapted to receive 5 the parts shown in Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings,'the machine embodying my invention comprises a base I having an upstanding post 2 and having a plurality of recesses 3 provided with spring members 4 to 10 removably secure containers 5, 6 and I within said recesses 3. A fourth container, 8, is preferably molded integral with the base I; the base has an opening 8' communicating with the in terior of container 8, as shown, in Fig. 4. A1115 of the containers are arranged in alignment with the respective sides of the post as shown in the drawings, Fig. 2.
A collar 9 ,isslidably arranged on the post.
- and is provided with a latch s for latching the collar at any predetermined position on the post. The collar has an integral open bracket l0 which is adapted to receive and support an electric In order to firmly secure the motor in the bracket ill, the latter may be made in two sections l2, l3, bolted or otherwise secured together tightly about the motor. The motor II is connected by a cord ll or the like to a source 01 electric current and is operated by a switch IE or the like. The motor has 9. depending vertical shaft It provided, at its lower end, with a head ll to which the basket holder It may be removably secured.
The holder I! is adapted to receive the baskets 20 and 22 for watch parts; the baskets are independent of each other and are separated by the member 2 i; immediate access may be had to either basket to insert or remove watch parts without the danger of intermingling same. Holder It comprises an open frame having 40 spaced rings W-IQ, the former defining the uppermost portion of the holder, said rings being designated upper" and lower rings respective ly. The basket 22 has a rim 28 which rests on the ring IS. The member 2| is positioned on the ring I! over the basket rim 23, closing said basket. Basket 20 is suspended from, the upper ring it 'and rests on the member 2f. Holder II is pro-- 'vided with spring fingers 24 having. out-turned free ends 25 adapted to be snapped into registry with openings 26 in the head l'l, removably securing the holder to the head.
By rotating the-collar '8 on the reduced portion 2" of post 2, the bracket l0 may be aligned with any predetermined container and the holder I! may then be brought down within the container and whirled therein.
The containers 5, 6 and 1 contain cleaning fluids F and are provided with baflie members 21, the latter comprising metal bands 28 adapted to expand within the containers and thereby automatically position the bailles therein and having secured thereto, at right angles, rods 29 extainers 5--1.
tending substantially the length of the containers and providing effective baiiies for the cleaning fluid F. l. v
The container 8 is used to dry the watch parts forces the air over the heating element 30 and holder IS. The forms of heating elements 39 shown in the drawings are illustrative only; any
other form adapted for the same purpose would be within the scope of my invention.
If desired, said heating elements may have thermostatic means incorporated therein to auto- 'matically cut off the current when the heating elements have attained a 'certain degree of heat. The container 8 is preferably provided with an upstanding stud 32 which forms'a stop for the bracket liiof collar 9. The stud 32 may have incorporated in the upper end thereof an electric switch 33 adapted to beactuated by the weight of bracket IO' and motor H, to actuate the heating element 30, as well as, fan'3i where the latter is used, while the holder I8 is in the container 8. When the holder 18 is in the.con-
tainers 6, 8, and 1, the bracket l0 rests on and seals the upper edge 36 of said containers, preventing the escape oi fumes during the rotation of the holder therein.
The form shown .in Fig. 9 is adaptedto hold clock works; the basket 20' is provided with spring fingers 24' having out-turned free ends 25' adapted to register with the openings 28 oi head 21. The form shown in Fig. 10 enables 'a plurality of watches to be simultaneously cleaned; the holder comprises a multiple frame 35 having a-plurality of sections 38 each of which is adapted to receive baskets and 22 and member 2|, as described in connection with Fig. 7; frame 35 has spring fingers 245 provided with out-turned ends 25' adapted to register with openings 26 of head 21. I
.The containers 5, 6 and I are normally closed by cover members 31 which are provided with spring members 38' to frictionally hold said covers on the containers. The spring members 38, as shown in Fig. 6, are preferably in the form of split rings which are. merely snapped into the cover members and by expansion automatically confine themselves therein. Instead of providing the automatic switch 33 incorporated in stud 32 of container 8, a separate electric switch 39 may be arranged in, the base i. The holder l8 may be provided with vanes 60 to complement the baille action of the baii le rods 29.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as re-'- strictive or lir'nitative of the invention, of which obviously many modifications may be con-.
structed, including many embodiments, without departing fromthe'spirit and scope of the invention herein indicated and denoted inthe pended claims. v
