The present invention relates to mining inachines and more particularly to a hydraulicja-ck adapted toadjust the position of the cutting bar so that the same will be maintained in a hori- -5 zontal position during the cutting operation.
An important object of the present invention is to: provide a manually operated jack positioned at one side of the machine and equipped with a pumppositioned at the rear end of the machine whereby .to raise or lower said side of the machine into the desired position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a base plate for the jack which extends transversely beneath the mining machine and to which the machine is connected at one side for pivotal movement while the jack is positioned at the opposite side of the machine to vertically adjust the same in order that the cutter may travel in the desired horizontal position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character of simple and practical construction, which is relatively inexpensive to manufacture and install in operative position, efiicient and reliable inperformance and the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof wherein like numerals refer to lik parts throughout and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the machine showing the jack in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the jack and base erally which is of conventional construction and includes the horizontal forwardly extending cutter 6. The underframe of the machine is designated at I having an upper flange Send a lower flange 9, the latter of which is provided with a notched portion ill to accommodate the upstandin shoe anvil H formed at one end of the shoe otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which or base plate l2 which extends transversely under the machine.
To the end of the plate l2 opposite from the anvil l l is provided an upstanding longitudinally extending flange l3 projecting upwardly through 5' a notch in the flange M of the underframe of the machine, the ends of the flange 13 having vertically offset extensions l5 adapted-to engage the flange id, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, to maintainthe platel2 against =10 transverse as Well as against longitudinal movement and also to permit pivotal movement of the adjacent side of the mining machine. I
The upper edge of the anvil H, at its front surface, is provided with a shoulder 56 and pro- 215 vided with a rear wall ll and side wall It rising from the shoulder to accommodate the extension l9 formed on the loweredge of a casting it having bolt openings zl forfixedly securing the casting to the adjacent side of the underframe 520 of the machine. r ,1
Formed in the casting 2B is a cylinder 22 having a cylinder lining 23 snugly fitted therein, the lining and cylinder being open at the bottom thereof and freely mounted in the lining of the cyl- 25 inder is a plunger 23' having a rounded lower end 24 adapted to conformably seat within a recess 25 formed in the shoulder it. The lining 23 is provided with an internal shoulder 25 adjacent its lower end upon which is seated a felt washer 30 27 secured in position by a steel collar 28. To the upper end of the plunger is secured a leather cup 29 by means of a nut 36. On the upper end of the lining 23 is a cap 35 threaded thereon, the
upper end of the plunger terminating below the top of the lining 23 to provide a chamber 32 in the top portion thereof. A port 33 extends through the cap 3! and the upper end of the lin- 111g 23 to provide communication with the chamber 32 above the piston. To the port 33 is attached a hose 3d which extends to a manually operated pump 35 secured in a convenient pcsition at the rear end of the machine and provided with an operating lever 36. The pump, at its bottom portion, is provided with a'reservoir Es'l to contain a confined fluid which is forced by the pump, under pressure, to the chamber 32.
The upper surface of the cap 3! is inclined as shown at 38 to conformably fit under the upper flange 8 of the undercarriage.
Accordingly in the operation of the device by the manipulation of the lever 36 the fluid under pressure will be forced into the chamber 32 whereby a lifting force will be created on the underside of the flange 8 by the cap 3! of the 55 cylinder lining by forcing the plunger 23' downwardly upon the anvil l I. Accordingly the right hand side of the machine may be elevated into a desired position to produce the proper horizontal cutting movement of the cutter 6 of the machine. A valve 39 is provided in the pump to release the fluid pressure in the chamber 32 and to permit the lowering of the machine, when desired. The upper edges of the rear walls I1 and side walls I8 of the anvil II are beveled as shown at and the lower end of the extension l9 of the casting 20 is also beveled as shown at 4| to facilitate the guiding of the extension into position upon the shoulder l6 during the lowering movement of the jack.
In order to assist the Weight of the machine in the lowering movement of the jack I provide a forwardly extending tubular extension 42 having a cylindrical chamber 43 formed therein and Within which is positioned a coil spring 44. A cap or plug 45 is fitted in the end of the extension 42 to which one end of a cable 46 is attached by means of a conical lead plug 41, the cable extending over a pulley 48 and has its opposite end sealed in a lead plug 49 snugly fitted in a recess 50 formed in the upper portion of the anvil II. The plug 49 is secured against removal by means of a threaded set screw 5|. It will be apparent that as the casting 20 of the jack is raised upwardly that the cable will place a tension on the spring 44 and upon the release of the fluid pressure in the jack the spring will assist in returning the jack to its lowered position.
It is believed the details of construction and manner of operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
What is claimed is:
1. A leveling attachment for coal mining machines comprising a plate positioned under the machine and a jack mechanism at one side" of ported for pivotal movement, a jack anvil car ried by the plate at a relatively opposite side of the machine, a casting secured to the machine having a cylinder therein, a free plunger working in the cylinder and having one end bearing against the anvil and means for subjecting the plunger to fluid pressure for raising the adjacent side or" the machine, and spring means urging the machine downwardly. v
3. In a hydraulic jack, an anvil having a shoulder provided with upstanding walls, a jack casting having a cylinder therein, a fluid pressure operated plunger in the cylinder having one end engaging the shoulder, said casting being slidably mounted within said walls of the anvil and bevelled edges on the upper'edges of 'the walls and on the lower edges of the casting to facilitate guiding of the casting during lowering movement of the jack.
4. In a hydraulic jack, an anvil having a shoulder provided with upstanding walls, a jackcasting having a cylinder thereinv and a fluid pressure operated plunger in the cylinder having one end engaging the shoulder, said casting be ing slidably mounted within said walls of theanvil.
