For purpose of clearer understanding in the claims, the leg I of each clip will be referred to as the inner leg or jaw of the clip and the leg II will be referred to as the outer leg or jaw.

It will be observed by reference to Fig. 2, that the back portions of the spoon shaped heads Ia and Ila are curved or rounded toward each other, and thus there is provided an entrance mouth, as indicated at l2, opening into the jaws, which provides that the edge or band of the garment may be easily slipped into place between the jaws without necessitating that they be manually gripped and sprung apart. It is also to be observed that the engaging surfaces of these heads are corrugated or knurled, as designated at l3, in order to effect a better gripping and holding action on the garment.

In order to provide for an easier application of agarment to the clips, the strap lll may be rotated about the pivot stud 8 to the position in which it is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and this throws it to the position as observed in Fig. 3, thus to provide that the band of a skirt or edge of a garment may be first looped or disposed about the inner leg portions I of the two clips and then the outer leg portion ll swung back to gripping position, causing the jaws to automatically adjust themselves to the thickness of the applied garment.

It will here be explained that in applying a garment to the clips 2'and 2', the clips first will be adjusted along the wire la to a spaced relationship less than the width of the top of the skirt or garment to be applied. Then the garment is applied about the legs I of the clips aft er the fashion shown in Fig. 1. The clips are moved apart along the wire la so that there will be an inward pull exerted on the legs I of both clips toward each other. This inward pull causes an upward flexing of the bars 4 between the hooks, resulting in an automatic gripping action efiected by the hooks and a binding pressure of the plate 4 against the wire la that will hold the clips. at the adjusted position and against slipping inwardly toward each other so long as this pull is exerted. However, as soon as this pull is relieved, the clips become free for sliding adjustment.

In Fig. 4 is illustrated an alternative form of clip in which the leg portion ll of the outer jaw member is bent inwardly and. then downwardly so that the pivoting rivet, or bolt, designated at 8a, extends through the downturned portion of that leg and through the leg portion I of the clip, instead of through the top or horizontal portion of the plate as seen in Fig. 2. This construction provides the same gripping action by the jaws on the garment as is provided for in the preferred form of clip but permits a rotation of the leg ii to a position as illustrated in Fig. 5, for the application of the garment. The gripping action and the supporting action of the jaws is the same, however, as that of the preferred construction and the automatic holding of the clips against slippage on the support In is the same. In order to better insure that the clips will not accidentally drop from the supporting hanger when no garment is being suspended thereby, the upwardly bowed part lib of the plate 4', between the hooks at the point where it engages is provided with the wire la, with a depression or groove L5, as indicated in Fig. 7, to seat the under side of the wire in. therein.

Another alternative form or modification of the device is illustrated in Fig. 6 wherein the plate or bar 4" is practically straight across its top and is formed medially of the hooks 5" and 5a with an abrupt hump l6 which yieldingly and frictionally engages against the wire la to serve the same purpose as the engaging portion of the plate of the device shown in 'Fig. 2. In

this modification, the leg ii" is illustrated as being pivoted by the rivet lb directly to the upper end of the leg 'I' of the gripping jaw.

Devices of this character may be used for the suspending of various garments merely by engaging parts thereof between the coacting jaws of the clips. However, they are especially useful for the support of skirts, which may be applied as illustrated in Fig. 1, and which, when so applied and the clips then adjusted to that spaced relation whereby tension is placed thereon, they will be caused to grip and hold their adjustment on the wire la.

Devices of this character may be inexpensively manufactured, are easily and readily applied to the type of hanger shown, and will effectively serve their intended purpose.

It is to be recognized that various modifications other than herein illustrated might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and therefore, it is not desired that the appended claims be limited only to the clips as herein shown, but that they shall be given an interpretation that is commensurate with the scope of the invention disclosed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- I. An attachment clip for clothes hangers of that kind having a horizontal rod across the base thereof comprising a plate equipped with spaced hooks that are adapted to be hooked over the rod to support the clip, and having a part thereof between the hooks yieldably engaging the rod to prevent the hooks being disengaged.

2. An attachment clip for clothes hangers of the kind having a horizontal rod across the base thereof; said clip comprising a resilient plate adapted to be extended along the underside of the cross rod and formed with spaced supporting hooks for overlying the rod and having a part thereof, between the hooks formed to yieldingly bear against the rod to hold the hooks seated; said plate having paired, depending legs at one end providing inner and outer grip jaws for receiving a garment between them, and said plate being adapted to be put under bowing tension by the pull on the inner jaw, thereby to cant the plate and effect an automatic gripping action of the hooks on the cross rod to hold the clip against slippage while such tension is applied.

A device as in 2, wherein the grip jaws of the clip are yieldably movable to open position to receive a garment between them and -have spoon shaped heads, respectively, engaged in back to back relation to receive the garment between them.

4. A device as in claim 2, wherein the outer jaw of said clip has pivotal mounting that permits it to be swung about its pivot out of opposed relationship to the other jaw for reception of a garment betweenthem.

5. An attachment clip for coat hangers of the kind having a horizontal cross rod; said clip comprising a metal plate adapted to be extended along and to underlie the cross rod of the hanger and having a garment support at one end turned downwardly at an angle with reference to the plate and having spaced hooks for overlying the rod to support the clip and having a part adapte ed to bear against the rod at a point between the clips; said plate being adapted to be placed under bowing tension incident to application of a garment to the support to cause bowing of the plate and the hooks to be automatically locked thereby on the rod against slippage.
