5 Claims.
This invention relates to reels, and more particularly to reels having metal drums.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a reel having relatively high strength, as compared with its weight.
In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, there is provided a reel having suitably formed heads and a drum with an inwardly directed flange formed integrally with the body thereof, and in the angle formed by the flange and the body there is welded a ring of circular cross section whereby the juncture of the flange and the body of the drum is materially strengthened without appreciably increasing its weight. The through bolts which hold the heads on the drum pass through this inwardly extending flange and at each place where the through bolts pass through the flange, there is provided a reinforcing member welded to The details of the construction of a reel made in accordance with the above object are more fully disclosed in the appended specification when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. l is a side elevational view, partly in section, of a reel embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through the reel, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate the same parts throughout the several views, a drum 5 is provided having a flange 6 at each end thereof, which flange extends radially from the body of the drum towards its axis and is formed at right angles to the body of the drum. Each of the flanges is provided with a plurality of holes 9 therein for receiving through bolts 1, which extend through the heads 8 of the reel and hold the drum between the heads. The heads may be made of any suitable material, and in the present instance have been shown in the form of construction which is preferable when wooden heads are used.
Before the drum 5 and heads 8 are assembled by means of the through bolts 1, a rod I is welded to the body portion and flange 6 of the drum 5. This rod may be either a continuous ring or may be a split ring to facilitate positioning it within the drum, and it may be welded throughout its length, as shown in Fig. 3, at H, or may be tack welded at various points throughout its circumference at the juncture of the both the flange and the ring. I
flange 6 and body of the drum 5. Reinforcing pads M are then welded to the flanges 6 and rings ID, as shown in Fig. 3 at l5, so that a hole l6 formed in the reinforcing member will be in direct alignment with the hole 9 in each flange 6.
The above-described construction is particularly useful when a thin alloy steel or high carbon steel is used for the drum since a relatively thin drum may be used in such a construction and the juncture of the flange and body of the 10 drum will be materially strengthened by means of the ring In. In like manner, the portion of ,the flange of the drum adjacent the through bolts 1 is thickened by the provision of the reinforcing members M which provides a relatively large bearing surface for the through bolts 1 which support the drum between the heads.
Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been described hereinbefore, it will be understood that various modifications and adaptations thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A reel comprising spaced heads and a drum interposed between the heads, said drum having integrally formed inwardly extending flanges provided with spaced bolt receiving holes, a ring welded to said drum at the juncture of the flange and body of the drum, bolts for fixing the heads to the drum, and reinforcing members fixed to the ring and flange adjacent the holes in the flange.
2. A reel comprising spaced heads and a drum interposed between the heads, said drum having integrally formed inwardly extending flanges provided with spaced bolt receiving holes, a ring welded to said drum at the juncture of the flange and body of the drum, bolts for fixing the heads to the drum, and apertured reinforcing members welded to the ring and flange with the apertures in them in alignment with the holes in the flange.
3. A reel comprising spaced heads and a drum interposed between said heads, said drum having radially extending flanges, an annular member fixed to the flange and body of the drum at the internal juncture of the flange and body of the drum, reinforcing members fixed to said flanges at spaced intervals, and a plurality of bolts extending through said flanges and reinforcing members and the heads.
4. A reel comprising spaced heads and a drum interposed between said heads, said drum having radially extending flanges, an annular member fixed to the flange and body of the drum at the internal juncture of the flange and body of the 5 2 2,221.0,878 drum, reinforcing members fixed to said flanges a. ring welded to the drum at the juncture of members and flanges. forcing members fixed to the ring and flange ad- 6 5. A reel including a head, a drum fixed to the jacent the holes in the flange. 0
