Application July 13, 1938, Serial No. 218,921
2 Claims.
This inventionrelates to containers and more especially to portable bottle carriers for conveniently and securely carrying a plurality of bottles.
The object of this invention .is to provide a more generally simplified and eflicient carrier which can be quickly and easily assembled and disassembled.
comprehensively stated, the invention is dirooted to a carrier adapted to receive a plurality of bottles, the carrier comprising a pair of upstanding walls adapted to retain the bottles in position and secured against relative movement by easily manipulated latching or locking means.
More specifically stated the invention com prises an arrangement for effectively locking the side walls of the container against relative movement, the arrangement being easily manipulated, in both setting up the carrier and unlocking it for the purpose of releasing the bottles.
In the drawing accompanying this specification several embodiments of the invention are illustrated, although it is to be understood that such embodiments are merely for the purpose of af-' fording a clear understanding of the underlying principles of the invention so that those skilled in the art may readily understand it without, however limiting the invention to the specific details shown therein.
In said drawing:
Fig. l is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. .2 is a vertical section, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan of the blank from which the container is formed.
ontinuing now by way of a more detailed I description andrefer'ring more particularly to the assembled container as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a base A has an upstanding back wall B and an initially arced side wall C which back and wall rise preferably from opposite edges of the base, each terminating at their upper end in vertically disposed juxtaposed flaps B and C, the latter having registering openings D and D to ailord a handheld for the carrier. The plane of the side wall C intersects the bottles E and has bottle receiving openings F conforming in shape subetantially to the intersected bottle section so as to restrict movement of each bottle in all directions, and thereby securely hold the bottles in place while exposing them to view. The vertical upstanding flaps B and C, rising from the upper edges of back B and side wall C as above indi cated, are locked together by latch members G and H, formed with the upstanding flaps B and C respectively. When vertical upstanding flaps B and C are placed face to face, with handbetween the inner edges of latch retaining members H, so that when the former is folded over and locked in place, it is held tightly between the inner edges of latch members H, thereby preventing any lateral motion of upstanding flaps B and C or back B and side wall C.
By reason of the comparatively large openings F, the bottles may be inserted expeditiously, the lower end of the bottle being stopped against the lower end 0! the openings F. When the tops of the side wall and back are drawn together and locked in position the side wall C is in most cases slightly arced as shown in Fig, 2. When the carrier in place is suspended by grasping the handhold opening D, the side wall C tends to straighten out so as to also bring the upper end, of the opening F into engagement with the neck of the bottle, thereby affording a stop against movement of the top of the bottle.
In assembling the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2 from the blank shown in Fig. 3, the blank is preferably bent along the scored lines J-J and K-K to form the base A and the back B and the side wall C, the bottles are placed in the openings F before the upstanding flaps B and C are locked together. In looking the container, latch member G is folded over between retaining latch members H, and latch hook L is pushed into keeper opening G, latching indentation M being forced into position by a downward motion of guide flap N. Similarly in unlocking the container guide flap N is pulled upward, thereby disengaging indentation M. When the carrier is locked, the handhold flaps B and C are brought together thereby drawing the side wall C across the bottles and slightly arcing the sidewall as heretofore explained. When the carrier is lifted by the handhold, the side C tends to straighten and wedge the bottle in the opening.
It is claimed:
1. A portable carrier consisting of a blank oi flexible sheet material having intermediate its ends transverse fold lines which demark a bottom section and opposed side wall sections, said side wall sections each having a handle piece endextension with a hand hole therein, the handle piece on one side wallv being foldable into face abutment with the handle piece on the other side wall with the two hand holes in registration to form a single hand hole through the top of v the carrier,- one of the'opposed side walls having pivotally connected thereto at a fold line thereof a latch tab comprising head and neck portions, the head portion having a laterally projecting hook, which tab, before the carrier is locked, projects outward from the end of such wall in the plane of the handle piece thereof and into the carrier hand hole, with clearance between it and the periphery of the hand hole suflicient to permit it to be swung freely through the carrier handle from such plane to carrier locking position, slit means extending longitudinally of and as means for holding the two side walls against relative lateral displacement when the 'walls are locked together in the closed state of the carrier.
2. A portable carrier consisting oi asblank of flexible sheet material having intermediate its ends transverse fold lines which demark a bottom section and opposed side wall sections, said side wall sections each having a handle piece end-' extension with a hand hole therein, the handle piece on one side wall being foldable into face abutment with the handle piece on the other side wall with the two hand holes in registration to form a single hand hole through the top of the carrier, one of the opposed side walls having pivotally connected thereto at a fold line thereof a latch tab comprising hook and neck portions, which tab, when the carrier is unlocked, projects outward from the end of such wall in the plane of the handle piece thereof and into the carrier hand hole, with clearance between it and the periphery of the hand hole suflicient to permit it to be swung freely through the carrier handle from such plane to carrier locking position, the other side wall having a slit parallel to the carrier bottom for insertion therein of the hook or .the latch tab, and having a pair of shoulder pieces projecting into the hole in the handle piece of such wall without encroachment on space required for insertion of the hand and spaced apart sufliciently to permit entry therebetween of the latch tab neck while serving as lateral abutments and centering means for the tab, and a finger piece on the neck of the latch tab whereby to effect a combined forward and lateral movement thereof to cause the hook to pass through said slit and into locking position, and to release the hook when desired.
