This invention relates to a novel and improved package wrap, and consists of the matters hereinaiter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention relates especially to that type of package wrap which is formed into a tubular body sealed lengthwise of the package along overlapping marginal parts, and which has its ends beyond the package tucked in at two pposite sides to form opposing flaps on the remaining two sides, which are folded down one upon the other and sealed together against the ends of the package. Package wraps of the kind illustrated for use in wrapping sticks of chewing gum are shown in Lindsey Patent No. 2,008,361, granted July 16, 1935, and Lindsey Patent No. 2,118,849, granted May 31, 1938. Said patents likewise illustrate means for severing and removing one end of the package wrap in the form of a cap, leaving the main body of the wrap as a container for the sticks of chewing gum therein.

The object of the present invention is to produce a package wrap of the kind comprising a tubular body closed at one end and havinga detachable cap at the other end so connected to the main body of the wrap that it may be detached therefrom and removed by a longitudinal pull on one of the sealed flaps on the end of the cap, which flap may be turned down and gripped for the purpose. Another object of the invention is to provide such a package wrap wherein the removable cap is so attached to one of the articles included in the package, in this case a stick of chewing gum, that a single stick will be withdrawn from the package in the act of disengaging said cap from the body of the wrap.

The advantages of the invention will appear to more fully as I proceed with my specification.

In the drawing:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the new package wrap when closed and sealed to contain the merchandise for which it is designed.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1, except that one of the sealing flaps is turned down to position to be grasped by the thumb and finger in the operation of opening the package.

Fig. 3 is a view like the first two figures, but with the cap included in the wrap disengaged and removed from the body of the wrap, and with one of the articles of merchandise dislodged and withdrawn from the remaining articles in as the body of the package.

Fig. 4 is a plan view on a smaller scale ot a sheet cut to provide the body of the package Frligp, with dotted lines indicating the lines of Fig. 5 shows a perspective view illustrating the part of the wrap which forms the body when folded into tubular form about the package and illustrating a turned-down flange or fold by means of which the cap part of the wrapper with a like fold-down in the reverse direction is to be attached to the body.

Fig. 6 shows a perspective view of a part of the wrap including the body and the cap at one end as they appear when enclosing the merchandise before folding down to enclose the end of the package.

Fig. 'I is a similar view showing the same end of the package with the wrap partially tucked in against the end of the package in a familiar manner, but without the body shown in Fig. 5.

Fig. 8 is a sectional view on a large scale in a plane indicated by the line 8-8 of Fig. 6, showing the interfolded flanges providing the lock between ,the proximate edges of the parts of the wrap constituting the body and the'cap at one end of the wrap.

The improved package wrap as illustrated herein is shown applied to enclose sticks of chewing gum, although it is to be understood that the invention is in no way limited to that use.

Referring now to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing: 10 indicates the novel package wrap as a whole as when it is formed and sealed to enclose a packet of chewing gum sticks II. It is made of a sheet of any suitable material, preferably Cellophane, and is wrapped about the packet of sticks, with overlapping margins l2, 12 to provide a sealed joint on one face of the package running lengthwise thereof, with tubular extensions which are turned in to close against the ends of the packet and form flaps which are folded, one upon the other. At one end of the package said flaps are sealed together in the usual manner. At the other end, however, the flap l3 only is sealed. The flap I4 is not sealed.

In this case the wrapper is made in two pieces, namely, a piece it which is designed to form the main body of the wrap enclosing the sticks and one end of the packet, and a piece (6 which is designed to form a removable cap end which is folded to form the said flaps l3 and it to enclose the other end of the packet. The pieces l5 and I6 of the wrap are formed at their proximate edges with reverse folded, narrow strips which constitute'oppositely disposed flanges l5 and I6, respectively, (see Figs. 5, '7 and 8), which are engaged and interlocked and preferably sealed to hold the body part and the cap part of the wrap together. This may be done by folding and interengaging the two pieces of the wrap as they are fed towards the position where the two parts constituting the whole wrap may be wrapped about the packet of chewing gum sticks, and their everlapping margins l2, I! may be sealed as in the present well known way of wrapping and sealing a single one-piece wrapper.

The sticks of gum are wrapped with paper or other material as usual. 0f said sticks ll, however, the wrapper of the one next adjacent'a wider face of the package (as illustrated in this case, the face where said margins overlap), has its end proximate to the cap formed to provide an extension or flap H as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 6. Then when the cap end of the package wrap is tucked in at its narrower sides I8, l8 in the usual manner, its one broader side 19 will be folded to enclose the flap H of the stick wrap and thus formvthe combination flap I4. The opposite flap l3 formed at the same time is then folded and sealed against the end of the packet, and the flap I4 is folded against it in the usual manner of folding and sealing the end of such a tubular wrapper, except that the flap I4 is not sealed. This completes the package as shown in Fig. 1.

When it is desired to open the package, the flap H is loosened or disengaged from the flap l3 and is turned down to the position indicated in Fig. 2. A pull'on the flap l4 longitudinally of the package will then break the lock seal formed by the flanges l5 and l6 and detach the cap l6 from'the body l5 of the wrapper. And further removal of the cap Hi from the body of the wrap will act to withdraw the gum stick attached to the cap [6, as shown in Fig. 3.

To relieve the strain and effort required in detaching and removing the cap, a notch 20 is cut in the underlying marginal overlap l2 in the zone of the interlocking flange's I5, l6 which hold the two parts l5 and N5 of the wrap together, as indicated in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7. As a result, when the wrap, comprising the body and the cap parts, is folded and sealed along its marginal overlaps l2, 12' in the usual manner, the seal between the said overlaps in the neighbor hood of the notch 20 will be omitted. Thus when force is applied to withdraw the cap, freedom of this part of the overlap from the sealing medium. will reduce the amount of force necessary to break the seal and detach the cap.

The advantages of the invention will be manifest to those familiar with the art.

I claim as my invention:

1. In combination, a packet of wrapped sticks, a wrapper for said packet closed at its ends and sealed lengthwise of the packet by overlapping margins, said wrapper comprising a body and a detachable cap at one end, one of said wrapped sticks having an extended, foldable flap, and the closed end of said cap comprising foldable flaps, one of which is secured to said extended flap on said stick.

2. In combination, a packet of wrapped sticks. a wrapper for said packet closed at its ends and sealed lengthwise of the packet by overlapping margins, said wrapper comprising a body and a detachable cap at one end, one of said wrapped sticks having an extended foldable flap and the closed end of said cap including flaps, the one foldable upon the other, and the first named flap on said cap being interfolded with and sealed to the extended foldable flap on said sticks.

3. In combination, a packet of wrapped sticks,

a wrapper for said packet closed at its ends. and

sealed lengthwise of the packet by overlapping margins, said wrapper comprising a body and a detachable cap at one end, one of said wrapped sticks adjacent an outer face of the wrapper having an extended, foldable flap, and the closed end of said cap comprising foldable flaps, one of which extends from said outer face of the wrapper and is secured to the extended flap of said stick.

4. In combination, a packet of merchandise, a

wrapper for said packet closed at its ends and I bond to reduce the force required to detach said cap.

5. In combination, a packet of merchandise, a wrapper for said packet closed at its ends and sealed lengthwise by overlapping margins. said wrapper comprising a body and a detachable cap sealed together by interengaging reverse turned flanges extending transversely of the packet, and the underlying one of the overlapping margins being provided with a notch opening through its edge in the zone of said flanges.

6. In combination, a packet of wrapped sticks, a wrapper for said packet closed at its ends and sealed lengthwise of the packet by overlapping margins, said wrapper comprising a body and a detachable cap at one end, means extending transversely of the packet providing a sealed connection between said body and cap, the underlying one of said overlapping margins being formed to provide a notch opening through its edge in the zone of said sealed connection between the body and the cap, the one of said sticks next adjacent to the overlapping margin of said wrapper having an extended, foldable flap, and the closed end of said cap comprising foldable flaps, the outer one of which is secured to the extended flap on said stick.
