UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. SANDS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS OF HIS RIGHT TO HARRIET J. KIERNAN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, AND CHARLES C. COOK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVENUE-STAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,430, dated October 7, 1879; application filed August 20, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. SANDS, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Revenue-Stamp, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and secure stamp that may be used by the government to prevent frauds upon the revenues, or by merchants to protect the contents of kegs, barrels, or hogsheads of liquors or liquids of any sort; and my invention consists of an elongated stamp of any suitable material adapted to cover the tap-hole or bung-hole of any such vessel, and provided with an aperture at each end, by which it can be held in place by any suitable appliance, so that it cannot be removed, and so that the contents of the vessel cannot be withdraw without puncturing or tearing the stamp.
- In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 illustrate, in plan, two good forms of my improved stamp.
A indicates the central portion, which will cover a tap-hole or bung-hole when the stamp is applied, and B B, indicate the holding-apertures in the opposite ends of the stamp, by which it is to be secured in place. These elongated openings have their greatest dimension in the direction of the length of the stamp, and they are made quite narrow, as compared with the width of the stamp ends, to adapt the openings to be engaged by thin hooks or lugs, which will readily tear or slit the stamp if strained or pulled lengthwise after being attached.
Of course I. may vary the form of my stamp at will, still preserving its essential elements, which are those just referred to by letter.
I have also invented a peculiar metallic stamp-holder, especially adapted to receive and hold my improved stamp, for which I have obtained Letters Patent of even date herewith, and which I prefer to use for that purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The stamp A, having the narrow end slots, B B, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
CHARLES J. SANDS.
