. 'l Claims. (Cl. 92-53) This invention relates to suction vrolls and more specifically relates to suction rolls having a plurality of separate suction areas.
This application is a division of my copending application entitled: Vacuum forming paper ber 9, 1935, now Patent No. 2,154,719 granted April 18, 1939.
It is an object of this invention to provide suction rolls having a, plurality of separate suction areas.
A further object of this invention is to provide a suction roll having a suction area that is readily adjustable tovary the size thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide a suction roll wherein a suction mandrel extends concentrically through a perforated roll and communicates with the inner periphery of the roll along separate areas thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide a suction'roll-with three separate suction areas each having a separate passageway for drainage from the roll. l
A further object of this invention is to provide a. suction roll having a stationary mandrel extending concentrically therethrough and mounted on its ends' on supports having drain conduits communicating with the mandrel.
A further object of this invention' is to provide .a suction roll wherein the suction applied to the roll and the drainage through the roll are separately controlled.
A specic object of this invention is to provide a suction roll with an adjustable suction area adapted to be regulated in size without disassembly of the roll.

Liquid drained from the passageways in the mandrel II flows the pipes 21, 28 and 29 while airis sucked through the openings |4, I5 and |6 in the mandrel, through the passageways 24, 25 and 26 with the drainage liquid and is then drawn into the suction pipes 3|, 32 and 33 behind the bailles 38. By this arrangement a very high vacuum can be obtained and the degree of vacuum can be separately regulated in each of the three passages in the supports and mandrel. The drain pipes 21, 28 and 29 may also be connected with suction pumps to effect a forced drainage of the liquid from the mandrel.
The perforated cylinder or roll I8 is bolted atone end thereof, as shown in Figure 5, to a large gear 34 by means of bolts 35. The gear 34 has a. solid web portion 36 closing the space between the mandrel Jand the roll 8. A shoulder 31 is formed on the inside face of the gear 34 and the end of the roll |8 lits snugly over the shoulder 31.

I fitted around the sleeve 39. The bearing ring 4| has an outturned flange 42 at its outer end thereof. An end thrust ring 43 is secured to the mandrel in abutting relation to the flange of the bearing ring 4|. The gear 34 and the roll I8 secured thereto can thus freely rotate over the bearing ring 4| while the end thrust ring 43 holds the roll against longitudinal movement.
If desired, the shoulder 31 and the bushing 38 provided on the gear 34 may be separate from the gear in the form of a separate chime ring. Such a chime ring can be used at the other end of the roll I8.
On each side of each row of openings I4, I5 and I5 of the mandrel there are formed on the mandral outturned flanges 58, 5|, 52 and 53 as shown in Figure 4. These ilanges are spaced concentrically from the outer periphery of the mandrel as shown. The flanges 50 and 5| have bolted thereon angle- members 54 and 55 respectively carrying sealing strips 54a, and 55a in their vertical legs for rubbing against the interior of the roll I8 to define a suction area A on the roll I8.
The horizontal leg of the angle member 54 may be ,slotted as at 56 (Figure 6) for receiving bolts `such as 51 therethrough. The member 54 can thus be slid over the ilange 58 by loosening the bolts 51 to adjust the position of the strips 54a against the roll 8. This adjustment. however, can only be made when the mandrel is re- 'moved from the perforated roll I8.

The angle members 55 and 59 have the horizontal leg portions thereof curved to t on the flanges 5| and 53 and these portions are provided with slots 60 and 6I respectively as shown in Figures 6 and 7. Bolts 62 and 63 extend through the slots 68 and 6| and are threaded into the flanges 5| and 53 respectively. Coiled springs 64 and 65 are disposed around the bolts 62 and 63 and held under compression between the heads of these bolts and washers 66 and 61, which washers are disposed around the bolts and fit over the horizontally curved legs of the angle members. The angle members 55 and 59 are thus held tightly against the flanges 5| and 53 but are adapted to be slid along these flanges because of the resilient spring retaining means.

As shown in Figures 8 and 9, the mandrel has formed thereon a pair of supports 14 and 15 spaced from each other opposite the angle member 55 but outside of the end sealing ring 1I. A

As shown in Figure 9, the supports 14 and 15 receive Vtherebetween a horizontal bolt 16 which is rotatably mounted at its ends in the supports. The bolt is provided with a head 11 adapted to be engaged by a wrench for rotation.
A boss 18 is threaded on the bolt 16 and carries a rod 19 projecting through a slot 88 formed in the vertical portion of the sealing member 1I. The rod 19 extends in-to a well 8| (Figure 8) formed in the angle member 55 and is secured therein by means of a. pin Bla.
As shown in Figure 5 the roll |8 is rotatably supported around the mandrel by means of the gear 34 at one end thereof. The opposite end of the roll, however, is supported on a chime ring 82 as shown in Figures 8 and 9. The chime ring hasv a shoulder portion 83 for receiving the end of the roll I8 and the roll is bolted to the ring by means of bolts- 84. The inner portion of the chime ring 82 forms an annular bushing 85 in spaced concentric relation around the mandrel A bearing sleeve 86 is pinned around the mandrelv by means of pins', 81 and receives therearound another bearing sleeve 88. which is disposed within the bushing 85 of the chime ring.

The chime ring 82 is provided with openings such as 9| therethrough at points opposite to the angle members 55 and 59. These openings can be closed by plates 92 as shown in Figure 3.
Removal of the cover plate such as 92 makes it possible to insert a wrench for engagement with the head 11 of the bolt 16 to rotate the bolt for moving the boss 18 along the bolt to thereby slide an angle member such as 55 or 59 along its flange 5| or 53. I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of constructionmay be variedthrough a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I, therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a' hollow suction roll, a suction mandrel having an openingv formed in the periphery thereof, a perforated drum rotatably mounted around said mandrel in spaced concentric relation therefrom, means for draining and evacuating the interior of said mandrel, seals extending longitudinally on said mandrel adjacent the sides of said opening for defining a suction area on the drum, endseals interposed between the mandrel and drum, one of said end seals having a slot cut therethrough, a longitudinal pin ex- Y- tending transversely through said slot and secured to one of the longitudinal seals, and means for moving said pin laterally for sliding the seal along the mandrel toward and away from the other longitudinal seal to vary the width of the suction area.

'A suction rollcomprising a pair of end supports in space opposed relation having a plurality of passageways formed therein, an open ended hollow cylinder secured at its ends to said end supports and having a plurality of passageways therein each in communication with a paseway in the end supports, ring members rotatably mounted on said cylindera perforated roll disposed concentrically around said cylinder in spaced relation therefrom and secured to said ring members, means for rotating said roll relative vto the cylinder, said cylinder having openings in the periphery thereof communicating each passageway therein with the perforated roll, seals extending longitudinally 'on the cylinder alongside of each of the openings therein. packing material carried by said seals for cooperating with the interior of the perforated roll to dene separate suction areas for each passage- Way in the cylinder on the perforated roll, annular seals disposed around the cylinder for sealing the ends of the suction area, means extending through said annular seals engaging some of the longitudinal seals, and a screw device arranged transversely of said means engaging said means ,to move the means and longitudinal seals circumferentially of the mandrel whereby said longitudinal seals can be moved relative to the cylinderA toward and away from' each other to v ry the Widths of the suction areas defined ther by without disassemblyofithe suction roll.

In a suction roll, in combination, an opent in spaced concentric relation therefrom, one of said rings having an opening therethrough communicating with the space between the mandrel and roll, a closureplate for said opening, an annular endseal xedly carried on said mandrel for sealing the space between the mandrel and roll, said end seal having an elongated slot therethrough in alignment with said opening through the ring member, a longitudinal seal carried on said mandrel and extending along one side of the opening therein, a pin secured in said longitudinal seal and extending through the slot I in the endseal, and mechanism between the end seal and the ring in alignment with the opening through the ring for moving said pin laterally to slide the longitudinal seal relative to the mandrel without removal of the end seal.

A suction roll comprising a hollow cylindrical suction mandrel having an opening through the side thereof, a perforated roll rotatably mounted around the suction mandrel, end seals between the mandrel and roll for sealing the space between said roll and said mandrel at the ends of said opening ln the'mandrel, a longitudinal seal mounted on said mandrel on each side j of said`opening and extending between said end seals .for defining a suction area on said perforated roll, means on the outside of the mandrel extending through one of the end seals and secured to one of said longitudinal seals, and a device for moving saidmeans circumferentially of the mandrel from outside of said end seal for positively sliding the longitudinal' seals connected with the means toward and away from the other longitudinal lseals to vary the size of the suction area without disassembly of the roll structure.

A suction roll `comprising a hollow suction mandrel, means forsupporting the mandrel, said mandrel having an opening in the side wall thereof, a perforated roll rotatably -mounted around the mandrel, a pair of longitudinal seals carried by the mandrel and extending between the roll and mandrel on each side of said 'opening to cooperate with the roll for defining a localized suction area on the roll, at least one of said seals being movably mounted on the mandrel, a device secured to said movably mounted seal, and mechanism for positively laterally moving said device to positively slide the seal on the mandrel toward and away from the other seal for varying the width of the suction area.

A suction roll comprising a hollow suction mandrel, means for supporting the mandrel, said mandrel having an opening in the side wall thereof, a perforated roll rotatably mounted around the mandrel, end seals between the mandrel and roll to seal the space between the roll and mandrel at the ends of the open-ing, one of said end seals having an opening therethrough, longitudinal seals carried by the mandrel between the roll and mandrel on each side of said opening `to cooperate with the roll for defining a localized suction area on the roll. at least one of said longitudinal seals being movably mounted on thev mandrel, a device secured to said movably mountthe longitudinal seal orilitl'ie mandrel toward and away from the other longitudinal seal for varying the width of the suction` area, and a cover for closing the 'ipening in` said end seal to seal the space between the longitudinal seals and end seals from the atmosphere, whereby a removal of said cover vand manipulation of said mechanism will `vary the width of the suction area without disassembly of the roll structure.

A suction drum construction comprising an imperforate open ended hollow cylindei` having an opening along the side wall thereof, end supports receiving the ends of the cylinder in airtight relation, a passageway in at least one of said end supports communicating with the interior of the cylinder, a perforated dr'um rotatably mounted around said cylinder and carried by the cylinder, longitudinal seals disposed between the cylinder and drum and carried by the cylinder on each side of said opening to define a suction area on the drum, at least one of said longitudinal seals being slidably mounted on the cylinder, a device carried on said cylinder at the end of said slidably mounted longitudinal seal, means connecting said device with said seal and manually operative mechanism on `said device to move said means laterally for sliding the movable seal toward and away from the other seal to vary the width of the suction area.
