Description

April T. ADAS FOUNRY SKIMMER Filed Jan. 6, 1939 vf4' WI/ INVENTOR XP) THOMAS L ADAs Patented Api. 3o, 1940 N este F OUNDRY SKIVIIVUR` `"Ihonriasf L. Atlas; Chicago, Illf, assigner to `Chicago Railway Equipment Company, i cago, IllL, a corporation of Illinois `lVIy invention `relates tol-tools such as skim` mers-,'spoonsgrabbling bars orpuddle bars for manipulating the plastic iron on the hearth of a l `puddling:furnaceor foryremoving slag from a 51 `bath off molten metalw More particularly ther invention relates to tools or this type having Watercooled structure and the main object of the invention is` to combiner a water cooled handle `and mounting.` fora blade or barllso that the luflatter maybe discardedandreplaced as t'burns downu without replacing or disassembling the relatively expensivewhandle structurel` with its Water circulating parts.
This andother detailed objects of my invention lb'? are attained;r by :the structure illustrated in' the l accompanyingldrawing in which. l l Figure 1 `isaxtop planlview of an improved Figure 3 is a vertical section through the head,.
taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figures 4, 5, 6 and '7 are detailed vertical transthe corresponding section 25 verse sections taken on "lines of Figure 2.
`Thetool includes a skimming blade I and a handle therefor including an elongated annulus 2 with a blade moimting 3 at one end and a ,o manipulating hand-hold 4 at the other end.
Blade l comprises a solid `plate `or barwith an opening intermediateits ends, preferably of noncircular contour to receive a nose 5, of smaller contour, on the mounting member 3. rlhe handu hold 4 is simply a short length of pipe seated in lugs projecting from an L 'l receiving one end of the annulus 2.
Annulus 2 comprises outer and inner tubes B and 9 respectively and of substantially dinerent m diameters so that a passageway lil `is formed between them. `'lhe right hand end of tube 9 .is`
supported by a collar Il seated `in tube 8 and sealing the inner end of `passageway l0. l
Mounting member 3 has a cup like body por- 5 tion `l2 which fits over tube The bottom of cup like portion 3 merges with the relatively smaller nose portion 5,. The interior of member 3 includes a cruciform baflle structure comprising vertical vanes I3 and horizontal vanes I4. i .The inner ends of these vanes mount the left handend of tube `9. Vanes I3 terminate adjacent the bottom of portion l2 of the mounting w w Application January 6,
1939', serial Nq. 249,531
Tube 8 isprovided with a threaded nipple l for connection to a water supply line and L l is threaded for connection to a discharge line.
, Water, or other cooling fluid, entering nipple i6 passes along the exterior of tube 9 to the extreme outer end of nose and then inwardly of tube 9 to the outlet in L l. The baffles insure. the circulation of the fluid and the elimination of any pockets in which steam or vapor may collect and `interfere with the substantial uniform cooling of the annulus and. particularly of the mounting member 3. l
Bar I is retained" in position on member 3 by a cap nut il.` If this nut is screwed down tightly when the bar is first mounted the subsequent expansion of the parts when heated will form such tight` joints that there will .be no crevces to admit molten metal under ferrostatic pressure l.
and injure the threads on nose 5 or permit fusing of the metal itself in the joints.
The circulation of cooling uid to the extreme forward end of nose 5 maintains even nut l1 sufficiently cool to avoid welding same to nose 5 and bar l and when the bar has burned down to Such an extent .that it is` no longer serviceable nut I 'l and what remains of bar I may be removed from mounting 3 and a new bar applied.
Tube 9 is unsupported intermediate collar H and the supporting baiile structure and the cooling liquid may circulate freely throughout the length of passageway l0. The outer tube 8 rst receives the cooling uid and therefore its temperature is maintained at a lower level than would be the case if the fluid was rst received in the inner tube, and as the fluid is admitted under a substantial pressure, at least 15 lbs., any
steam or vapor formed in the device will tend to take `the path of least resistance which Would lead to the outlet in L yl.
It will be understood that the annulus, includingthe end member 3 with lits baiile structure may be used to mount ladles, spoons or accessories other than the skimmer blade or the annulus may be used as a rabbling or puddling bar or` agitating stick independently of any accessories. These and other variations in the details of the `structure may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and the exclusive use of such modifications as comewithin the scope of the claims is contemplated.
What is claimed is:
1. In a tool of the class described for skimming molten metal, elongated` outer and inner tubes forming an annular passageway between them, a separately-formed, relatively heavy and short cup like terminal member surrounding and receiving the end of said outer tube and including a cruciform vane structure extending into and mounting said inner tube and providing for the ow of cooling fluid from said passageway throughout the interior of said terminal'member and then into said inner tube to a discharge point remote from said member, and a skimming blade mounted on said member independently of the fluid passageways.
2. In a hand manipulated tool for skimming molten metal, an elongated handle comprising substantial lengths of ordinary tubing, one within the other and forming an annulus arranged for circulation of cooling liquid to the extreme enc'l thereof and including a relatively short heavy separately-formed external threaded hollow liquid-receiving terminal member providingV for the return of liquid through the handle, a detachable bar apertured to receive said member, and a nut on said member detachably securing said bar thereto.
3. In a tool for skimming molten metal, a solid head, a handle including inner and outer tubes forming an annulus and including an end por tion extending through and mounting said head, and baille vanes in said end portion and extend a hollow nose portion of restricted diameter projecting outwardly from its bottom wall and exteriorly threaded, vane elements integral with said member and projecting into said nose portion and into said inner tube to mount the latter in spaced relation to said outer tube, a solid head apertured to receivel said nose portion and seated against the shouldered bottom of the cup like terminal, anda nut threaded onto said nose portion and thrusting said head against its seat.
5. In a tool of the class described for skimming molten metal, an outer tube andy an inner tube forming an annular passagewayr between them,
a hollow terminal member surrounding and seating an end of 'Said `outer tube and having elements extending into and supporting the end of said inner tube and providing for the iiow of fluid from said passageway to the end of said member and then into said inner tube, a solid skimmer blade havingan aperture to receive said member to mount the blade thereon independently of the fluid retaining elements of the tool,
and means detachably securing said blade t0'- said member,
6. In a tool ofthe class described for skimming" molten metal, an outer tube and an inner tube forming an annular passageway between them, a'
hollow terminal member surrounding and seatinner tube and providing `for the ow of fluid from saidpassageway to the end of said member and then into said inner tube, a solid skimmer blade having an aperture to receive said member, andv 'releasable means holding said blade on Vsaid member, `said means `permitting removal of 4saidv blade from said member without disassembling said member and either of said tubes.
