It is likewise highly desirable to provide; suchV a 5 range which has all of the eye appeal of modern gas and electric ranges with the economy of r an .oil or coal burning operation. Accordingly, I
have provided a kitchen range having a onepiecetop which is very neat and attractive in 1U appearance and which may be produced very inexpensively.- This top has an opening therein receiving an insert for .supporting-stove lid hold-` ers or,-,if,Vv desired, inthe case of a. combination type-frange the said one-piece top mayy also be suitably aperturedfatA one'side of the insert opening, to receive gas burners or electric heaters.
Further provision of the inventionl resides in the use of *a novel-one-piece cast heat concentrator,- Y
associated with the aforesaid linsert formedy in a vmanner toV concentrate the heat from.v an oil burner orv solid fuel iirepot at the stove lids or openings therefor and associated Withfthe Y range top'l in a manner toeliminate` radiation and thereby increase the economy of operation oftheunit. 'Y Referring to the drawing, the reference. numeral I in general indicates my improved range v the body of which is provided with closure f2., For example, an oven disposed centrally ofthe stove is closed by the closure 2 whle'the closure 3 conceals a storage compartment and the closure 4 aifords access to an oil or solid fuel combustion chamber 5 wherein asuitable conventionally ,shownburner 6-` (which may be either anoil burner or the grate-of a solid fuel unitiis 'I'he giace around*` the combustion chamber .5 and interiorly of the external shell -or wall .-1. of
the range body is filled with a suitable Vinsulating material il. A. The reference numerals indicates acne-piece vitreous enameled sheet ,iron top which is provided with a vbottom'peripheral `inturned flange I0 adapted `to rest on a similar intrned ilange 45 II on the shell 'I as illustrated in 2. As illustrated in. solid lines in Fig'. 1, this top is provided With an integral vertical back piece Vor guard I2 and hasformed in its horizontal surface a rectangularopening I 3 adapted to receive 50 ajsuitable insert I4, which may be of "cast iron, being provided with aninwardly disposed `shoulder I5 surrounding this opening to support the insert. Alternatively vand Within the scope 'o f my invention, if desired the top 9 may bepro- 65 vided with a further opening Ii .as indicated in -Fig. 1A, outlining a space for the reception of gas burners or electric heaters, which latter may be conventionally mounted within the space beneath the top, and a conventional spider-like supporting plate or grill 9| may be disposed in the opening I6. Although, as stated, the aforesaid supplemental burner opening may be provided in the top 9 when a combination type .range is desired, it should be understood that my invention is primarily directed tol a one-piece top 9 and other structural features to be described regardless of the type or number of heaters embodied in the range.
The insert Il is formed with an appropriate number of burner openings I8, four being shown in the present embodiment. As illustrated, the combustion chamber 5 has an offset at one side at I9 and a smoke discharge opening or flue 20 is formed at the rear of the oiset. The combustion chamber or housing has an open top which lis covered by the heat concentrator 2| illustrated in Fig. 3.
This concentrator is in the form of a casting having an annular down-turned flange 22 adapted to fit over the upper edge of the walls of the .chamber 5 and support the concentrator in operative position. Upwardly tapered open ended concentrator domes 23 are provided in alinement with the insert burner openings I8, these domes terminating slightly below the upper surface of the insert I8 and being adapted to telescopingly receive the annular stove lid holders 24 which also engage the insert Il in the manner illustrated-in Fig. 2. The usual stove lids 25 are received by the holders 24 in conventional manner. The holders and lids are disposed to lie substantially flush with or only slightly above the plane of the range top. i
After assembly oi the concentrator 22 on the chamber or housing 5 in the manner described, the space surrounding the various domes 23 is illed with the insulating material 8 so as to completely insulate these domes from one another and the remainder of the range, with theresult that the eiiiciency of the unit is greatly increased, the only radiation occurring at the stove lids. At the same time, these domes 23 concentrate the heat from the burner 6 while serving as supports for the stove lids and holders. In Fig. l, a suitable door for lighting the burner 6 is generally indicated'by the reference numeral 26.
The foregoing construction is one which is effi-'- cient in its combustion and very attractive in appearance so as to have considerable sales appeal. It is furthermore exceedingly economically produced either in the form of a combination range or one for straight oil or Wood construction. I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which is very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be'desired.
