ATT ACHING TAPE Filed July 5, 1939 I Jaw/S 70??? Wad/"e gm. 4 J1 04 WE Patented Apr. 2, 1940 PATENT OFFICE 2,195,895 A'r'rlionnve 'rara John v. Moore, Pawtucket, a. 1., minor to Moore Fabric Comp ny, Pawtncket, B. 1., a corporation of Rhode'lsland Application July 3, 1939, Serial No. 282,599
1 Claim.
This invention relates to the type of separable connectors commonly termed zippers and relates more particularly to an improved attaching tape for such connectors.
It is the general object of my invention to proyide an attaching tape which is in part elastic and in part non-elastic and which comprises an improved weave by which manufacture of the tape is simplified and made commercially practical.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described'and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
A preferred form of the inventionis shown in the drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a proved tape and showing the weave construction;
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic sectional view further illustrating successive picks in the weave construction; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of the tape with one part of a "zipper'connection aflixed thereto.
Referring to the drawing, my improved tape T 25 comprises a longitudinally extending transversely elastic section III adapted to be stitched to the edge of a garmentor other article to be closed, and a non-elastic longitudinally-extending section II to which one part II of a "zipper" connection or other separable fastener may be se-' cured.
A preferred shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in comprises non-elastic warps and weft thread 2|, these elements being illustratively shown as interwoven in a simple two-up and two-down ribweave.
The non-elastic section II comprises non-elastic warps 30, a non-elastic weft thread 3|, and also commonly includes a heavy cord 32 interwoven to form a reenforced outer edge to which the "zipper part [2 may be secured.
While my invention is not necessarily limited to the particular weaves shown. I have indicated 45 the portion of the section ll adjacent the elastic section It as woven two-up and two-down in a cave for my improved tape T is which the section I0 I twill weave. At the extreme outer edge, the nonelastic section is made tubular to embrace the cord 32. The tubular structure is indicated in 50 Fig. 1 and will be evident in Fig. 2 if the upper and lower picks are folded forward and rearward over the middle pick as would be the case in the actual fabric.
portion of my iman elastic While the particular weaves may be varied, is desirable that the number of picks per inch of the elastic weft thread 2| and the non-elastic weft thread il be correlated, so that each pair of adjacent picks of the elastic thread 2! 6 may be interlocked with a corresponding pair of adjacent picks .of the non-ela 1c weft thread 3| along the line of the abutting margins of the elastic and non-elastic sections. The warp thread 34 at the'margin of the section II may be heavier 10 or stronger than the other warp threads 30, as it serves as a catch thread to establish the line between the sections. 4
Successive and corresponding picks in Figs. 1 and -2 are lettered A to F in the elastic section 15 ill and A to F in. the non-elastic section II respectively. I
when made substantially in the manner described, my improved fabric may be easily and rapidly woven and is thus economical to manu- 20 facture and commercially practical.
when such a tape is installed for use, the reenforced non-elastic section I l provides a firm base for attachment of one part l2 of the separable connector, while the elastic section III, when attached to a garment or other article, proi'rides a. slight transversely yielding action which much improved the operation of the "zipper.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claim, but what I claim is: A woven attaching tape comprising longitudinally parallel elastic and non-elastic sections each of substantial width, and an edge cord, said, elastic section being woven with elastic wefts only and said non-elastic section being woven with non-elastic wefts only, the elastic section being woven two-up and two-down in a rib weave and the non-elastic section being woven two-up and two-down in a twill weave in the portion adjacent the elastic section. and being woven tubular about the inserted edge cord in its outer edge portion, and each pair of adjacent picks of elastic weft in the elastic section being connected by a terminal loop enclosing within itself a terminal loop connecting a pair of non-elastic weft picks whereby the elastic wefts and the non-elastic wefts are interlocked and the elastic and non- 5 elastic sections permanently joined at their abutting margins.
