IMPROVEMENT IN POST-HOLE AUGERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,478, dated September 9, 1879 application filed April 29, 1879.

To all whom it may concern..-

Be it known that I, OI-IARLEs ALFRED HUD- SON, of Saltillo, in the county of Hardin and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Hole Au gers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference'being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to letters of referencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to devices for digging holes for fence-posts, telegraph-poles, 850.; and it consists of certain improvements in the same, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings similar letterss of reference marked thereon indicate like parts of the invention.

A is a piece of sheet-steel, of suitable size and thickness, bent to form the segment of a circle of a size to correspond with the posts that are to be set up. B is ahandle attached to the blade A by the three forks I) b b, this construction givin the tool the necessary strength, and at the same time allowing the proper amount of spring to the blade-a very essential point in this particular tool.

I am aware that posthole diggers have been constructed wherein a single blade was used, which was less than or about onehalf the section of the cylinder. This class, strictly speaking, are but ordinary spades or shovels bent to a concave form, and require the same manipulation as a spade.

I amv also aware that these diggers have been constructed of a complete circle, the meeting ends notjoined, thus'allowinga solid core to be drawn out, but requiring rather awkward handling to discharge said core.

My invention overcomes the dit'ticulties in these classes, and by constructing it of a httle more than half of'a cylinder, leaving the balance of the side of the cylinder open, a solid core can be dug and raised and readily discharged through the side opening, thus allowing the work to be readily and rapidly performed.

Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is'

The post-hole digger consisting of the vertical blade A, bent so as to form a little more than the half-section of a cylinder, slightly elongated at the longitudinal center of its section, and larger in diameter at its bottom or cutting-edge than at its upper end, whereby the device may be inserted in the ground and operated without boring to incase the charge, and when removed therefrom compress and so hold the same that when lifted clear of the hole the contents may readily be discharged through the side opening in the blade, sub stanlially as and for the purpose set forth.
