In Great Britain September 28, 1937' 6 Claims (01. 164-47) This invention relates to web severing mechanism of the type in which sections of material such as cork invconnection with the cork tipping of cigarettes are severed from a moving web of the material.
It is found desirable in connection with the cork and like tipping to so arrange the angle of out,
"which would normally be at right angles to the I direction of feed of the web, that the cut edges of the'section lie oblique to the length of the section, and it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved mode of mounting the knives so that an alteration-in the angle of cut may be readily effected.
According to the invention a mounting for the co-operating knives is provided which is capable of oscillation about a transverse'axis; meansbeing provided whereby the angle of the mounting may be adjusted relatively to said axis by a ro tational movement about the longitudinal axis of the mounting.
The oscillatorymovement of the mounting may be effected by a crank device the pin of which engages the mounting through a self-aligning ball bearing. i Further features of the invention will be hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

The upper part 5 of the mounting is adapted for movement towards and away from .the lower part E in order to obtain'a cutting stroke of the knives.
Thismovement isv preferably obtained by the provision of a telescopic coupling between the parts. Thus the upper part is provided with spaced downwardly extending rods 22 which slide incomplementary sockets 23 on the lower-part.
I The reciprocatory movements of the upper part are obtained by acrank device 24 the crank 25 of which engages in the inner race of a self-aligning ballbearing 26 carried in an end recess Ell in the upper part. By this arrangement any oblique setting of the mounting will be automatically accommodated by the selfaiigning ball bearing.
The crank device also imparts an oscillatory movement to the mounting about the spindle l0, producing a movement at the plane of cut corresponding to the lengthof the sections being severed from the web.
The crank pin 25 may be radially adjustable for varying the length of cut. i h
In order to adjust the mounting for producing an oblique cut, the locking bolt I8 is slackened, whereupon the mounting may be pivoted around the spigot 13 to the desired angle by adjusting the screws it. After adjustment the locking bolt is again tightened.
The co-operating knives are mounted upon the the medial line thereof also coincides with said axis.
Thus according to the form shown in Figures 1 and 2 in which the knives are formed of a substantial thickness the upper knife I is secured by screws 28 and abuts against adjusting screws 28. The lower knife 8 is secured by locking screws 30 and bears against adjusting screws 31. The lower knife 8 is formed as a slotted plate against which the upper knife 1 is always in contact.
A web guide 32 is secured to the lower mounting 6 and comprises a thin plate bent up to provide a flared opening which seats adjacent the slot of the knife 8.
According to an alternative arrangement (see Figure 3) the knives la and 8a are mountedupon spring strips 3t and 35, the strips-being secured by the locking cap screws 28, 3t and adjusting screws 29 and 3|. v
The lower knife 8a is provided with side horns 36 against which the knife la is guided.
I claim: i
1. A mounting for theco-operating knives of a web severing mechanism, comprising upper and lower parts carrying co-operating knife elements and movable relatively to one another longitudinally of the mounting, a fixed supporting spindle transfixing said lower, part and around which said mounting can be swung bodily to shift the shearing line selectively forward and backward relatively to the length of the web, a pivotal connection between said lower mounting part and said transverse spindle to permit rotative adjustment bodily of the mounting around its longitudinal axis perpendicular to the axis of said spindle, to set the line of shear of the knives obliquely to the direction of web-feed, and means to cause relative shearing movement as between said knives, by relative reciprocation between said knife-carrying parts, in the various positions of said swinging and rotative adjustment of said mounting relatively to said web.
2. A mounting forthe co-operating knives of a web severing mechanism,- comprising upper and lower parts having a telescopic connection. whereby theyiare movable relatively to one another longitudinally of the mounting, a saddle piece pivotally mounted on an axis transverse to the mounting, said saddle piece having a recess,; a spigot on said lower part engaging the recess, the axis of the spigot coinciding with the longitudinal axis of the mounting and intersecting the pivot axis of the saddle piece, a self-aligning bearing carried by the upper part, and a crank device the pin of which engages the self-aligning bearing.
3. A web-severing mechanism comprising a. mounting including parts movable relatively to each other and carrying knife elements cooperating by reason of said relative movement to operate upon a web fed therebetween, a supporting structure upon which one of said parts is journalled to permit oscillation of said mounting swingingly around the axis of said journal, a pivot 7 connection between contiguous parts of said supporting structure and mounting and means whereby said mounting is adapted to be adjusted rotativ-ely around an axis approximately perpendicular to the shear line of said knives, and a crank device including a crank pin, and also including a self-aligning ball-bearing carried by the other part of said mounting, whereby said oscillation of the mounting swingingly around the axis of said journal support, and consequent relative cooperative movement of said knife elements, is effected when said crank device is actuated, regardless of the relative adjustive positions occupied by said parts.

A web-severing mechanism having thefea: tures claimed in claim 3, wherein provision is made of a saddle piece, having a recess, a spindle upon which said saddle piece is mounted pivotally and a spigot on the mounting engaging in said recess, the axis of said spigot coinciding with spindle and having a recess in which said spigot engages, the axis of the spigot coinciding with the longitudinal axis of the mounting and intersecting the axis of the spindle.
6. A web-severing mechanism having the fea-v tures claimed in claim 3, wherein provision is made of upper and lower parts movable relatively to one another longitudinal of the mounting, a double pivotal support for said lower part whereby the mounting is swingable both about a trans-' verse axis, and about a longitudinal axis, {cooperating knives carried by said upper and lower parts, one of said knives comprising a plate having a body slot over the edge of which. the other knife slides, co-acting with said edge of the slot ARTHUR BELL.
