LUMINOUS ADVERTIS ING DEVICE Filed 00. 10, 1958 Jr? uerzior, E, Z5012,
Patented Feb. 6, 1940 Leopold Lion, Berlin-Charlottenburg, Germany Application October 10, 1938, Serial No. 234,280
In Germany October 23, 1 937 1 Claim;
This invention relates to a luminousadvertising device comprising a front portion provided with freely standing characters or (and) signs cut out or stamped out and constituting advertising matter, an illuminated concave rear wall located behind said advertising matter, and a source, or sources, of light arranged between the said matter andthe rear wall in such a manner that it is, or they are, invisible for persons looking at the advertising device.
I am aware of the existence of luminous advertising devices showing advertising matter consisting of opaque characters or (and) signs app'earing as silhouettes in front of an illuminated background. There areamong these known devices such, the background or rear wall of which is vaulted similar to the circumferential surface of a cylinder and is so arranged that the appertaining axis of the cylinder extends horizontally. I
The present invention relates to an improved 1 construction of luminous advertising devices of pbesides, as a decoration means.
the just mentioned type, and consists therein that the illuminated rear wall serves also as carrier for figurative representations in that its upper rim is cut out or stamped out in conformity with the contours of the respective representations. Another characteristic feature of the invention is that the rear wall which is vaulted like the circumferential wall of a cylinder is so arranged that the appertaining axis of the cylinder extends vertically.
While the known luminous advertising devices mentioned in the above first twoparagraphs are not suited for the decoration of store windows and are to be mounted especially by reason of their unsuited design of the rear wall and the horizontal position of the axis of the curvature of this wall only in a comparatively high position with respect to the lockers-on, for instance firmly fixed to the front of the respective building, the present improved luminous advertising device is portable and permits, therefore, to be placed, for instance, into public exhibition boxes, the interior of store windows and rooms and a lot of other places where the device can serve, Owing to' the particular design of the rear wall, in that this shows figurative representations, as already mentioned, the eyes of persons passing by or being present, as the case may be, are attracted whereby the object of the device is attained.
' The invention is illustrated diagrammatically and by way of example on the accompanying drawing on which Figure 1 is a front-view of the constructional form selected,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal horizontal section through the same, and
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional elevation through the center of the device.
On the drawing, i denotes the front portion and 2 the concave rear portion or background.
The front portion carries-any desired plurality of characters forming a work (3) and extending freely upwards from the top of the portion l, as shown in Fig. 1. The characters (or, maybe, signs suited to the object in view) are cut or stamped out and may, if desired, be made integral with the member I or at least the top thereof. Below the characters etc. 3 and the rear wall 2 is arranged the source of light which is, in the example shown, an incandescent lamp 4.
Inthe example shown the characters 3 extend upwardly, in fact, from a common supporting member (not visible) inserted into an upper slot 5 (Fig. 2.) of a box 6, 1 forming the body of the front portion I Said member with its characters 3 may be exchangeable so as to permit the showing of another advertising word or the like. The box 6, 7 may comprise a frame 6 and a front plate I which is also utilised for the advertising purpose, in that it shows either opaque characters etc. on a transparent ground or transparent characters etc. on an opaque ground, the respective characters etc. being in either case likewise illuminated by the lamp 4.
The figurative representations extending upwardly from the rim of the concave rear wall 2 are formed, in the example shown, by female heads 8 cut out or stamped out in conformity with the outlines 9 of the respective heads. Also said wall 2 may be exchangeable so as to permit the showing of other figurative representations. For this purpose the front portion I is provided with lateral guide members I0 (Fig. 2).
The figurative representations 8- proper, that is to say, the surface portions enclosed by the outlines 9, may be painted upon the material of the wall 2 or may be printed thereon, or separately manufactured representations may be pasted onto the wall portions concerned.
The freely standing characters etc. 3 may be opaque or transparent, in which latter case they are illuminated also by the lamp 4, the rays of which illuminate said characters etc. from behind.
I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the constructional form shown in the drawing which is to serve merely as an example.
In the details departures are possible lying fully within the scope of this invention.
I claim: A luminous advertising device, comprising in 5 combination a front box-like frame, a partially transparent front plate adapted to bear advertising matter enclosed in the said frame, detached cut-out signs such as letters extending upwards from the upper edge of the frame, a 0 concave rear wall, cut-out signs such as pictorial representations of figures extending upwards from the upper edge of the rear wall to a greater height than the signs extending upwards from the front frame, the rear wall and the signs upstanding therefrom being curved about a vertical axis, and a source of light concealed between the front frame and the lower portion of the rear wall to illuminate the rear wall and the signs up-standing therefrom and also the partially transparent plate in the front frame.
